Power Point presentation about the Patricia Pond Hinckley Women's Intensive Residential Program, an in-patient treatment program for female substance abuse patients. The program is part of the CREDO Community Center, located in upstate New York.
Context: this presentation comprises slides used in an assembly presentation first delivered in February 2015. The target audience was Year 9 (aged 13 and 14) but may well be used with other teenage audiences. I do not show the first slide included here; I start with the first image as the audience settles. I ask if anyone spots something unusual about it, and when the horns in the shadow are noted, I say that this will make sense later.
The first section refers back to another assembly which I have delivered to many of the same students in Year 7 (aged 11 and 12) (http://www.slideshare.net/jamespenstone/digital-footprints-presentation). The early slides (safebook) are therefore a recap of common-sense advice about maintaining a positive online presence. I make it clear that social networks come and go with popularity /usage (the implied Facebook in the infographic may well not be one they use regularly).
Then the scene is set to talk specifically about issues of cyberbullying, a separate but connected strand of digital citizenship education. Speech bubbles imply discussion time for the audience (share with someone next to you), followed by volunteered answers. There is one thought bubble for individual reflection of 30 seconds or so.
Note: many videos which have been created on the topic of cyberbullying (including the ones used here) reference suicide as a potential outcome. I think it is important to give some context that this tragic outcome is actually rare and certainly not inevitable. It is important to address as a potential outcome, but there are many other outcomes which I think an audience should give a lot of consideration to especially as some of these are, by contrast, inevitable. So I do not dwell on the endings of some of the youtube clips shared here.
The most powerful video is the animated poem by Shane Koyzcan. Before playing, I emphasise that Shane uses the metaphor of ‘troll’ for cyberbullies, as opposed to the related but sometimes different use of the word online. It is worth allowing a few moments of quiet reflection immediately after it has played. I choose to draw out that (a) it is useful to hear the passion/anger/frustration of someone who has received bullying, as it makes us recognise the possible impact much more and (b) that no one person is actually the portrayed troll themselves but that their actions (intentional or otherwise) might take on the powerful metaphor. Hence the follow up question (which without this context seems a bit ambiguous). One of the best answers seems to me to be to empathise, referring back to earlier discussion on why it happens (one reason being that a bully is removed from the victim and can not see their impact).
After some appropriate responses, the presentation ends with a positive statistic from the recent survey in Canadian schools (and one which contradicts the 90% statistic). I think this is a useful way to end, as well as referring back to the choices we

Elder abuse is a continuous or a single act that occurs in a relationship where trust is expected but causes distress to later life of a person. Elder mistreatment entails psychological, physical, sexual, exploitation, abandonment and emotional abuse. The effects of abuse of older adults include nutrition and hydration problems, persistent physical pain and soreness, wounds and injuries. I will evaluate the issues associated with abuse of older adults and describe the changes in social policy that impacted how human service professional support this population in this paper. Furthermore, I will consider the needs of older adults and describe the types of service plans that can be created for victims of elder adult's abuse. A proposal of human service programs for elderly adults that experience elder abuse will be made as well as a description of how human service agencies can prevent future abuse of older adult’s thus promoting self-empowerment.
Issues associated with elder abuse are health status, cognitive ability, and social network. These problems are the major risk factors for abuse of older adults. Cognitive capacity is the ability of an individual to process information and solves problems. Older adults experience decreased information processing and problems solving skills as a result of declining cognitive flex.

For the Research Assignment, I have chosen to focus on an area of Healthcare that rarely gets the
attention it deserves Mental health. I
chose this topic because I am personally effected by it and so are many millions of Americans. Mental illness is also one of the leading causes of
death in our nation and one life is lost as a result of suicide, abuse or incarceration every 17mins in the United States. Mental illness has been my
area of focus throughout this program and the advocacy and participatory philosophy will be useful for the final project because it suggests that “
that research inquiry needs to be intertwined with politics and a political agenda” (Creswell, p.9). I do believe that mental health has a specific
agenda for a study and that there has been constant aim for reform in healthcare and mental health. This social issue is definitely pertinent right
now and topics that address it such as “empowerment, inequality, oppression, domination, suppression, and alienation” (Creswell, p.9), and are
really the focus of the study. The goal of this project for me, is to provide a voice to participants and give them the ability address the concerns that
will lead to reform.
According to Kemmis and Wilkinson (1998) this philosophy offers four key features of the advocacy/participatory framework of inquiry:
1. Participatory actions are focused on bringing about change, and at the end of this type of study, researchers create an action agenda for change.
2. It is focused on freeing individuals from societal constraints, which is why the study begins with an important issue currently in society.
3. It aims to create a political debate so that change will occur.
4. Since advocacy/participatory researchers engage participants as active contributors to the research, it is a collaborative experience.
Research Problem Statement
My Vision is to Provide members of the community with the opportunities and education needed to prevent death due to suicide, acts of self-harm
and the traumatic impact of mental illness. By promoting resilience, the enhancement of community resources, conflict resolution and support for
individuals, families and the communities of those who suffer with mental disorders, illness or have a sudden mental health crisis. The target
population includes all individuals within Chatham County, with unmet mental health needs. These individuals are currently not being served by
traditional methods due to financial, structural, and personal barriers including access and stigma. Untreated mental health issues of these
individuals put them at risk for exacerbation of physical health problems, suicide attempts, premature moves to long-term care se.
