1. 1. Recap Week 1

Our perception is influenced by various

filters that alter incoming information that

passes through them.

One of our strongest filters is our BELIEFS –

what we perceive as the truth about

ourselves and the world around us.

Our beliefs distort, delete and generalise

incoming information to make it fit in with and

reinforce our strongly held ideas of ourselves and the

world.

 2. 2. Recap Week 1 Contd.

Limiting/negative beliefs serve to hold us back from achieving our true potential and are strongly tied in with our self-image

We develop negative beliefs about ourselves from the input of those we look up to and care about – a lot of these beliefs are formed in childhood, but can also come from other significant people throughout our lives.

We come to accept these negative judgements about us as TRUTH – leads to the development of poor self-image

 3. 3. Recap Week 1 Contd.

Once our poor self-image is formed, the belief filter in our subconscious kicks in and acts to reinforce our negative view of ourselves by deleting/distorting information that doesn’t fit our beliefs about ourselves and focuses on the information that reinforces our poor self-image.

 4. 4. How do we change our Beliefs?

The first tool that we need in order to change our negative beliefs about ourselves involves our SELF-TALK.

What is SELF-TALK?

 5. 5. How do we think?

We think in WORDS – act as the building blocks of language and communication.

As we develop we learn to make sense of our world through words.

Words allow us to form a 3-D view of the world:

WORDS PICTURES EMOTIONS

 6. 6. Definition of SELF-TALK

As we think with words, we carry out a constant internal conversation with ourselves – we call this internal dialogue SELF-TALK .

Self-talk is very powerful and it plays a key role in building and reinforcing our self-image.

 7. 7. SELF-TALK Contd.

Our self-talk builds a positive or negative self-image based on the beliefs we hold about ourselves – we constantly judge and interpret our own experiences by talking to ourselves in a positive or negative manner.

Examples of negative self-talk :

“ how could I be so stupid?”

“ There I go again, same old story”

“ What is wrong with me anyway?”

 8. 8. SELF-TALK CYCLE

SELF-TALK

REAL

PERFORMANCE SELF-IMAGE

 9. 9. HOW DO WE CHANGE OUR SELF-TALK?

FIRST: we need to become FULLY aware of our self-talk

Imagine it like tuning into a radio channel – we want to tap into the exact frequency so we can hear our self-talk more clearly.

Once we become aware of our self-talk, we can start to look how we can change it.
