A Fab Lab is a small workshop that provides access to digital fabrication tools and technology. It aims to empower people to create almost anything by making fabrication resources available to anyone. Fab Labs originated at MIT in the 2000s as a way to make technology accessible. The Fab Lab at the University of Oulu in Finland provides training and resources to students and teaches digital fabrication skills. It also partners with local schools to provide educational programs and training for teachers to incorporate digital skills into their classrooms.

A Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory)

(personal) digital fabrication.
- Equipped with flexible computer-controlled
tools that are suitable for various materials
and object sizes
- GOAL: to empower, to educate and to
create “almost anything”, making fabrication
technology accessible to ‘almost anybody’
