Private instruction, (30) minute lessons for 15 weeks.
COURSE RATIONALE
The purpose of this course is to assist the student in developing
advanced foundational skills in musicianship and performance.
These goalscorrespondtothe followingLewisUniversityBaccalaureateCharacteristics:

approachesto knowledge.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Appropriate tothe student’sabilityandlevel,uponsuccessfulcompletionof thiscourse,students shouldbe
able to:
1. Prepare musicasdeterminedbythe instructor.
2. Developgoodpractice habits.
3. Demonstrate vocal,instrumental,orcompositional technique.
4. Comprehendthe musical style andhistorical significanceof assignedmusic.
These outcomescorrespondtothe DepartmentofMusic StudentLearning Outcomes:
1. Comprehendourmusical languageandbe able toanalyze musicfromthe commonpractice periodto
the present.
2. Employthe vocabularyusedbyinformedlistenerstodescribemusic
3. Identifythe majorcomposersactivewithineachstyle periodanddescribe the genresfavoredbythese
composers.
COURSE RELATIONSHIP TO MISSION

ASSESSMENT AND GRADING POLICY
OTHER REQUIRED ITEMS – Students are expected to provide their own sticks and
mallets. Here is a suggested minimum requirement of all
Vic Firth products:
1 pair of concert snare drum sticks (SD1) or (2B)
1 pair of drum set sticks (any Vic Firth Signature Series)
1 pair of marching snare drum sticks (any Corpsmaster series)
1 pair of Vic Firth brushes
2 pair of marimba/vibe mallets (M3)
1 pair of xylo/bell mallets (M6)
1 pair of timpani sticks (General T1)
1 pitch pipe for tuning the timpani
1 metronome and 1 stick bag
*Vic Firth makes an education pack (EP2) that comes with most of the items from above.

ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED SO THE STUDENT CAN ACHIEVE THE GREATEST POSSIBLE
SUCCESS IN THE COURSE
GRADING – Grades are earned by exhibiting a proficiency of novice, competent, or proficient in four
categories: Preparedness, Progress, Attendance and Thought Process. Explanations of this rubric can be
found in Blackboard. Any student who tries hard with a positive attitude about their ability to achieve
will earn high marks. Any performances are considered assessments.
If you the student cancels for any reason, the lesson will most likely NOT BE MADE UP
ALL PERCUSSIONISTS MAJORING IN MUSIC WILL PERFORM ON THE STUDENT RECITAL
AT THE END OF THE SEMEMSTER!

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Requirements of the course must be tailored to the level of the student; emphasis is placed on a
performance during the semester.
CLASS ATTENDANCE
Studentsare expectedtoattendall classesaspart of the normal learningprocess.Inaddition,studentsmustbe
especially consistent in attendance, both on-ground and online, during the first two weeks of the semester to
confirmregistrationandto be listedonthe official course roster.Studentswhofail tofollow thisprocedureand
who have not received prior approval from the instructor for absences will be withdrawn from the courses in
question by certification of the instructor on the official class lists. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission
also requires attendance as a “demonstration of academic progress toward a degree” as one criterion for
retainingfinancial aidawards.(2013-2014 Undergraduate Catalog,p.35).
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Scholasticintegrityliesatthe heartof LewisUniversity.Plagiarism, collusionandotherformsof cheatingor
scholasticdishonestyare incompatible withthe principlesof the University.Studentsengaginginsuchactivities
are subjecttolossof creditand expulsionfromthe University.Casesinvolvingacademicdishonestyare initially
consideredanddeterminedatthe instructorlevel.If the studentisnotsatisfiedwiththe instructor’s
explanation,the studentmayappeal atthe department/programlevel.Appeal of the department/program
decisionmustbe made tothe Dean of the college/school.The Deanreviewsthe appeal andmakesthe final
decisioninall casesexceptthose inwhichsuspensionorexpulsionisrecommended,andinthese casesthe
Provostmakesthe final decision.
CLASSROOM DECORUM
In orderto maintainanenvironmentconducive tolearningandstudentdevelopment,itisexpectedthat
classroomdiscourse isrespectfulandnon-disruptive.The primaryresponsibilityformanagingthe classroom
environmentrestswiththe faculty.Studentswhoengage inanyprohibitedorunlawful actsthatresultin
disruptionof aclass maybe directedbythe facultymembertoleave classforthe remainderof the classperiod.

referredforactiontothe Deanof StudentServices.(2012-2013 StudentHandbook,p.15).

COURSE RATIONALE The purpose of this course is to assist the student in developing advanced foundational skills in musicianship and performance. Here is a suggested minimum requirement of all Vic Firth products: 1 pair of concert snare drum sticks (SD1) or (2B) 1 pair of drum set sticks (any Vic Firth Signature Series) 1 pair of marching snare drum sticks (any Corpsmaster series) 1 pair of Vic Firth brushes 2 pair of marimba/vibe mallets (M3) 1 pair of xylo/bell mallets (M6) 1 pair of timpani sticks (General T1) 1 pitch pipe for tuning the timpani 1 metronome and 1 stick bag *Vic Firth makes an education pack (EP2) that comes with most of the items from above.   • 3. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Requirements of the course must be tailored to the level of the student; emphasis is placed on a performance during the semester. CLASS ATTENDANCE Studentsare expectedtoattendall classesaspart of the normal learningprocess.Inaddition,studentsmustbe especially consistent in attendance, both on-ground and online, during the first two weeks of the semester to confirmregistrationandto be listedonthe official course roster.Studentswhofail tofollow thisprocedureand who have not received prior approval from the instructor for absences will be withdrawn from the courses in question by certification of the instructor on the official class lists. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission also requires attendance as a “demonstration of academic progress toward a degree” as one criterion for retainingfinancial aidawards.(2013-2014 Undergraduate Catalog,p.35).
