Pluralism, Majoritarian and Elite Theories
The question whether Madison's brilliant solution to bringing competing groups into relative harmony succeeded also brings us to our third concept: the plualist, majoritarian and elite models political scientists use to explain the American political system and how it works.
Spoiler alert: Only around half of the US population's eligible voters actually vote. And if voters aren't voting who runs the show? (The 2020 presidential election was an exception with 66 percent of eligible voters voting.)
Pluralists realize most people don't vote, but, in our high school example, they would argue that as long as each group from popular kids to nerds is represented before student government and school administration, good and fair decisions can result. This approach updates Madison's original solution for the modern era.
Followers of
Elite theory argue that since many don't vote, those with power (i.e. money) rule. In our high school example popularity rules, so more cheerleaders and jocks get into power and call the shots.
There is also a second version of elite theory that says education and wisdom rather than money should equal power. This view, which was also held by some of our founders, says people often don't vote because they are ignorant so decisions should be made by those better able to deal with differing ideas and points of view. In our example, teachers and principals are wiser and should rule because they know what's best for the students.
Those subscribing to majoritarianism argue that those left out in society would have more power if barriers to voting (time, money, feeling empowered) were lifted so more voices could be heard than just elites. In our example, nerds would be better off if everyone voted and had a say because the popular kids are outnumbered by other groups if they joined together rather than being divided.

Can you identify any principles of justice which are being or may be violated by participants in the fast-fashion industry? What principles are violated by the corporate decision-makers? By the employees? By the consumers?
As demonstrated in the film, some economists argue that conditions in garment factories, bad as they may be, are better opportunities for workers in “developing” countries than they would have otherwise. After watching this film, do you buy this argument? Even if the argument is true, does that mean that conditions should not be improved? How are women’s rights particularly affected?
Compare the conditions for garment workers you saw in the film to those in factories in the U.S. in the early 20th century. How are they similar and how are they different? Compare the conditions for garment workers to conditions for factory workers in the United States and other Western countries today. What is the difference? What do you think makes conditions better in some countries? What allowed workers in the West to secure better working conditions, higher salaries, health insurance, and a chance at entering the middle class?
How important is collective bargaining to workers’ rights? When workers organized and protested the labor conditions in the film, they were met with a fierce backlash from their employers and state forces. Why is worker organizing and collective bargaining so threatening to employers and governments?
Given that labor and environmental laws are weaker in “developing” countries, are fast fashion companies’ voluntary codes of conduct sufficient to improve working conditions in garment factories? If not, how can domestic and international law be changed to make this improvement?

Conforming to Expectations
In 1951, psychologist Solomon Asch sat a small group of about eight people around a table. Only
one of the people sitting there was the true subject; the rest were associates of the experimenter.
However, the subject was led to believe that the others were all, like him, people brought in for an
experiment in visual judgments. The group was shown two cards, the first card with a single
vertical line, and the second card with three vertical lines differing in length. The experimenter
polled the group, asking each participant one at a time which line on the second card matched up
with the line on the first card.
However, this was not really a test of visual judgment. Rather, it was Asch’s study on the pressures
of conformity. He was curious to see what the effect of multiple wrong answers would be on the
subject, who presumably was able to tell which lines matched. In order to test this, Asch had each
planted respondent answer in a specific way. The subject was seated in such a way that he had to
hear almost everyone else’s answers before it was his turn. Sometimes the non-subject members
would unanimously choose an answer that was clearly wrong.
So what was the conclusion? Asch found that 37 out of 50 test subjects responded with an
“obviously erroneous” answer at least once. When faced by a unanimous wrong answer from the
rest of the group, the subject conformed to a mean of four of the staged answers. Asch revised the
study and repeated it, wherein the subject still heard the staged wrong answers, but was allowed to
write down his answer rather than speak it aloud. In this version, the number of examples of
conformity––giving an incorrect answer so as not to contradict the group––fell by two thirds. He
also found that group size had an impact on how much pressure the subject felt to conform.
The results showed that speaking up when only one other person gave an erroneous answer was far
more common than when five or six people defended the incorrect position. Finally, Asch
discovered that people were far more likely to give the correct answer in the face of near-
unanimous consent if they had a single ally. If even one person in the group also dissented, the
subject conformed only a quarter as often. Clearly, it was easier to be a minority of two than a
minority of one.
Asch concluded that there are two main causes for conformity: people want to be liked by the
group or they believe the group is better informed than they are. He found his study results
disturbing. To him, they revealed that intelligent, well-educated people would, with very little
coaxing, go along with an untruth. He believed this result highlighted real problems with the
education system and values in our society (Asch 1956).

This chapter could have been titled “

warranted Inferences.” The following are certain infamous reasons given to support arguments—infamous because they mimic real support. There are two basic replies to these inferences: “So what?” or “What else?”
Abusing arguments may be among the world’s older professions. Proper names for many types of abuse are in Latin. I’ll deal only with the seven deadliest: inconsistency,
ad hominem
attacks, appeal to pity, begging the questions,
post hoc ergo propter hoc
, appeal (only) to the many, and straw man.
INCONSISTENCY
Two main ways of being inconsistent come to mind:
1.
Offering reasons that are contradictory
. For example, arguing that most people who strive for success do so out of hunger for love and admiration they didn’t get when growing up; and in the same book arguing that most people strive for success because they can afford to take the risk of failure, having been given a lot of encouragement and attention as children. Since encouragement and attention are tantamount to love and admiration, this argument is foundering on inconsistency unless the arguer makes a careful distinction between the pairs of terms

and
encouragement-attention
to explain this disparity.
2.
Offering reasons that contradict the conclusion
. For example, we should conserve on fuel because many of the elderly poor are dying from lack of heat in the winter. Given that reason, the conclusion would appear to be the opposite: that we should expend more fuel, at least on the elderly poor (unless some fiend is advocating killing off the elderly poor).

A) The most significant problem with the way that foreign aid is presently being dispensed is that countries are trying to give the people tangible things such as animals, water, and food. Those things are great and they do help a lot, but they are only temporary. What happens when the handouts quit? What happens when the GMO no longer has funding or disappears? The people in the developing country are right back in the same boat that they started in. One way to possibly remedy the situation is to invest is businesses in those countries. If those people can be taught how to run a business and get their economy going they will possibly be more successful. Another way to help for more long term then just a couple meals is education. Education goes a long way in building an economy.

I do not believe that they are the same. Failing to reject the null hypothesis is when you do not have enough evidence to reject its statement or prove it wrong. Accepting the null means that you should act is the null hypothesis as true. The null hypothesis is a test where you are going to look at two propositions, the null hypothesis and the alternative. Think about it in terms of a court case, innocent until proven guilty. The hypothesis test is the trail, the null hypothesis is the dependent, and the alternative hypothesis is the prosecution. If there is evidence presented that does not prove the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt than you still have not proved the defendant is innocent. But, based on the evidence you can't reject that possibility. If the verdict enters the court records as not guilty that doesn't mean the defendant is innocent, because the prosecution couldn't prove it's case to the necessary, beyond reasonable doubt standard. It did not convince the judge to abandon the assumption of innocence.

Pluralism, Majoritarian and Elite Theories
The question whether Madison's brilliant solution to bringing competing groups into relative harmony succeeded also brings us to our third concept: the plualist, majoritarian and elite models political scientists use to explain the American political system and how it works.
Spoiler alert: Only around half of the US population's eligible voters actually vote. And if voters aren't voting who runs the show? (The 2020 presidential election was an exception with 66 percent of eligible voters voting.)
Pluralists realize most people don't vote, but, in our high school example, they would argue that as long as each group from popular kids to nerds is represented before student government and school administration, good and fair decisions can result. This approach updates Madison's original solution for the modern era.
Followers of
Elite theory argue that since many don't vote, those with power (i.e. money) rule. In our high school example popularity rules, so more cheerleaders and jocks get into power and call the shots.
There is also a second version of elite theory that says education and wisdom rather than money should equal power. This view, which was also held by some of our founders, says people often don't vote because they are ignorant so decisions should be made by those better able to deal with differing ideas and points of view. In our example, teachers and principals are wiser and should rule because they know what's best for the students.
Those subscribing to majoritarianism argue that those left out in society would have more power if barriers to voting (time, money, feeling empowered) were lifted so more voices could be heard than just elites. In our example, nerds would be better off if everyone voted and had a say because the popular kids are outnumbered by other groups if they joined together rather than being divided.

Can you identify any principles of justice which are being or may be violated by participants in the fast-fashion industry? What principles are violated by the corporate decision-makers? By the employees? By the consumers?
As demonstrated in the film, some economists argue that conditions in garment factories, bad as they may be, are better opportunities for workers in “developing” countries than they would have otherwise. After watching this film, do you buy this argument? Even if the argument is true, does that mean that conditions should not be improved? How are women’s rights particularly affected?
Compare the conditions for garment workers you saw in the film to those in factories in the U.S. in the early 20th century. How are they similar and how are they different? Compare the conditions for garment workers to conditions for factory workers in the United States and other Western countries today. What is the difference? Conforming to Expectations
In 1951, psychologist Solomon Asch sat a small group of about eight people around a table. Only
one of the people sitting there was the true subject; the rest were associates of the experimenter.
However, the subject was led to believe that the others were all, like him, people brought in for an
experiment in visual judgments. The group was shown two cards, the first card with a single
vertical line, and the second card with three vertical lines differing in length. The experimenter
polled the group, asking each participant one at a time which line on the second card matched up
with the line on the first card.
However, this was not really a test of visual judgment. Rather, it was Asch’s study on the pressures
of conformity. He was curious to see what the effect of multiple wrong answers would be on the
subject, who presumably was able to tell which lines matched. In order to test this, Asch had each
planted respondent answer in a specific way. The subject was seated in such a way that he had to
hear almost everyone else’s answers before it was his turn. Sometimes the non-subject members
would unanimously choose an answer that was clearly wrong.
So what was the conclusion? Asch found that 37 out of 50 test subjects responded with an
“obviously erroneous” answer at least once. When faced by a unanimous wrong answer from the
rest of the group, the subject conformed to a mean of four of the staged answers. Asch revised the
study and repeated it, wherein the subject still heard the staged wrong answers, but was allowed to
write down his answer rather than speak it aloud. In this version, the number of examples of
conformity––giving an incorrect answer so as not to contradict the group––fell by two thirds. He
also found that group size had an impact on how much pressure the subject felt to conform.
The results showed that speaking up when only one other person gave an erroneous answer was far
more common than when five or six people defended the incorrect position. Finally, Asch
discovered that people were far more likely to give the correct answer in the face of near-
unanimous consent if they had a single ally. If even one person in the group also dissented, the
subject conformed only a quarter as often. Clearly, it was easier to be a minority of two than a
minority of one.
Asch concluded that there are two main causes for conformity: people want to be liked by the
group or they believe the group is better informed than they are. He found his study results
disturbing. To him, they revealed that intelligent, well-educated people would, with very little
coaxing, go along with an untruth. He believed this result highlighted real problems with the
education system and values in our society (Asch 1956).

warranted Inferences.” The following are certain infamous reasons given to support arguments—infamous because they mimic real support. There are two basic replies to these inferences: “So what?” or “What else?”
Abusing arguments may be among the world’s older professions. Proper names for many types of abuse are in Latin. I’ll deal only with the seven deadliest: inconsistency,
ad hominem
attacks, appeal to pity, begging the questions,
post hoc ergo propter hoc
, appeal (only) to the many, and straw man.
INCONSISTENCY
Two main ways of being inconsistent come to mind:
1.
Offering reasons that are contradictory
. For example, arguing that most people who strive for success do so out of hunger for love and admiration they didn’t get when growing up; and in the same book arguing that most people strive for success because they can afford to take the risk of failure, having been given a lot of encouragement and attention as children. Since encouragement and attention are tantamount to love and admiration, this argument is foundering on inconsistency unless the arguer makes a careful distinction between the pairs of terms

Offering reasons that contradict the conclusion
. For example, we should conserve on fuel because many of the elderly poor are dying from lack of heat in the winter. A) The most significant problem with the way that foreign aid is presently being dispensed is that countries are trying to give the people tangible things such as animals, water, and food. Those things are great and they do help a lot, but they are only temporary. What happens when the handouts quit? What happens when the GMO no longer has funding or disappears? The people in the developing country are right back in the same boat that they started in. One way to possibly remedy the situation is to invest is businesses in those countries. If those people can be taught how to run a business and get their economy going they will possibly be more successful. Another way to help for more long term then just a couple meals is education. Education goes a long way in building an economy.

Professor and class,
I do not believe that they are the same. Failing to reject the null hypothesis is when you do not have enough evidence to reject its statement or prove it wrong. Accepting the null means that you should act is the null hypothesis as true. The null hypothesis is a test where you are going to look at two propositions, the null hypothesis and the alternative. Think about it in terms of a court case, innocent until proven guilty. The hypothesis test is the trail, the null hypothesis is the dependent, and the alternative hypothesis is the prosecution. If there is evidence presented that does not prove the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt than you still have not proved the defendant is innocent. But, based on the evidence you can't reject that possibility. If the verdict enters the court records as not guilty that doesn't mean the defendant is innocent, because the prosecution couldn't prove it's case to the necessary, beyond reasonable doubt standard. It did not convince the judge to abandon the assumption of innocence.

The essay must have at least 2 sources utilized. Each answered question is worth 5 pts each for a total of 25 pts for the semester. For preapproved absences for quizzes, student will answer one question for each missed exam with the same requirements as above. 1. Imagine that you have just been released from prison after a five-year term. What are the first things you will do? What problems do you expect to face? 2. What is a civil disability?
