The Web is broken. HTTP is inefficient and expensive, especially for large files. Webpages are being deleted constantly, with the average lifespan of a web being 100 days. The Web's centralization limits opportunity and innovation. And it causes problems in the developing world, with natural disasters or faulty connections. We can do better. In this talk, I'll explain IPFS, a project intended to replace HTTP and build a better web. IPFS is a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol to make the web faster, safer, and more open. In addition, IPFS will use Filecoin as a reward mechanism. Filecoin aims to provide a decentralized network for digital storage through which users can effectively rent out their spare capacity, receiving filecoins as payment. Filecoin raised 200M$ last month, breaking all records in blockchain ICOs to date.

Abstract: Only a few years ago the move towards microservice architecture was the first big disruption in software engineering: instead of running monoliths, systems were now build, composed and run as autonomous services. But this came at the price of added development and infrastructure complexity. Serverless and FaaS seem to be the next disruption, they are the logical evolution trying to address some of the inherent technology complexity we are currently faced when building cloud native apps.
FaaS frameworks are currently popping up like mushrooms: Knative, Kubeless, OpenFn, Fission, OpenFaas or Open Whisk are just a few to name. But which one of these is safe to pick and use in your next project? Let's find out. This session will start off by briefly explaining the essence of Serverless application architecture. We will then define a criteria catalog for FaaS frameworks and continue by comparing and showcasing the most promising ones.

Abstract: Only a few years ago the move towards microservice architecture was the first big disruption in software engineering: instead of running monoliths, systems were now build, composed and run as autonomous services. But this came at the price of added development and infrastructure complexity. Serverless and FaaS seem to be the next disruption, they are the logical evolution trying to address some of the inherent technology complexity we are currently faced when building cloud native apps.
FaaS frameworks are currently popping up like mushrooms: Knative, Kubeless, OpenFn, Fission, OpenFaas or Open Whisk are just a few to name. But which one of these is safe to pick and use in your next project? Let's find out. This session will start off by briefly explaining the essence of Serverless application architecture. We will then define a criteria catalog for FaaS frameworks and continue by comparing and showcasing the most promising ones.

Cloud Foundry is an open source Platform as a Service (PaaS) that was developed and published by VMware in 2011. It allows developers to build, deploy, and run applications on the cloud. Cloud Foundry uses buildpacks to define application environments and supports various programming languages, frameworks, and services. It provides tools for developers like vmc command line, Eclipse integration, and Maven/Gradle plugins. Scaling in Cloud Foundry can be done at the infrastructure level by the PaaS operator or at the application level by the app developer.

Rakuten adopted Cloud Foundry to reduce operational costs and make infrastructure transparent for developers. Over time, Rakuten has focused on adding features like mod_rewrite and improving database integration while filling gaps in Cloud Foundry version 2.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
