This document provides an overview of user experience (UX) design. It discusses the four key elements of UX: value, usability, adoptability, and desirability. It then describes several UX design techniques including card sorting, interactive sketching notation, wireframing, usability guidelines, and the system usability scale questionnaire. The document encourages exploring additional resources to learn more about UX and provides examples of applying some of the techniques through interactive games.

For the past 20 years we have developed, designed, marketed with, for and at users. UX and usability are getting a lot of attention within that context. Beyond the buzzwords, we will look at two practices that shape our daily lives. What does it mean for an application to be usable and how's that part of creating an amazing user experience? This talk aims to discuss some actionable developer tips to ensure that your applications resonate with users.

UX / User Experience is booming as a practice and methodology. However, there is often misunderstanding and mystery around UX basic practices. Join us for a discussion of simple tools and processes to use as a reliable toolkit from project to project. Yes, they take time to complete but these practices in the early stages of design mean lower rates of change later in the project - translating to lower cost, faster timelines and more solid design decisions.

Appreciative interviews and other Liberating Structures - XP DaysFrederic Vandaele
When we are looking for improvement, we generally start by looking at what's going wrong. This 'fix it' approach has some weakness even though it could produce some results. In addition, this approach doesn't drive any motivation nor positive energy for people that are participating to this exercise.
Appreciative Interviews, as one of the liberating Structure, is based on a paradigm shift. The idea is that instead of focusing on what's going wrong, we choose to focus on what's already good about the individual, team or organisation and seek out how to amplify it.
ChangeMakers How to change things. Tell me a story.Frederic Vandaele
Improving a global organisation to make it more lean and performing is a change that deeply impacts the social network of a company and requires the involvement of everyone. It is sometimes however very difficult to imagine how each of us, at our own level, can participate in getting our own direct organisation better.
"ChangeMakers" is an interactive workshop during which we will experiment and learn together techniques that will allow to initiate changes in our own direct environment. Amongst others, coaching cards will be used that will allow us to get involved in the discussion with others.
During this session we set out to answer this question: Why don't we remember much of what we have seen, heard or experimented during conferences even after a week? Our theory is that most of us don't have a good note-taking technique, so we decide to invite you to an 1 hour sketchnoting bootcamp. During this session, we will pass through some basic principles of sketchnoting like shapes, lettering, framing, structure and process. At the end of the session, you will have your sketchnote canvas ready for the next sessions of the Agile Tour conference and the necessary skills to run your first experiment.
SCAMPER is a creative brainstorming technique that helps you generate ideas for new products and services by encouraging you to think about how you could improve existing ones. SCAMPER is a checklist of idea-spurring questions arranged by Bob Eberle into this mnemonic. Substitute something. Combine it with something else. Adapt something to it. Modify or Magnify it. Put it to some other use. Eliminate something. Reverse or Rearrange it.

Kickstart your Product Backlog with Innovation GamesFrederic Vandaele
How to start your Scrum project? How to initialize your product backlog? You are not alone, in most agile projects, managing the product backlog remains a complex and difficult activity.
Scrum said that it's the Product Owner that manage the product backlog but it does not tell us how (It's a framework you know). However, the product owners are people from the business. They have little or no experience with Agile and what it means in term of contribution to the project.
How to involve a group of users in the creation of product backlog without that they feel cheated or ignored? How to prioritize dozens or even hundreds of user stories of varying sizes with a group of users representing different needs with conflicting interests?
The Innovation Games are techniques that can address these issues. The art is to combine these methods with a view to a common vision to emerge as an initial product backlog that will help the Scrum team to start the project on a solid foundation.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Dr. Jemison (TED Speaker) says it's foolish to even think in terms of having to choose between being analytical or being intuitive and likens this false choice to having to choose between being idealistic or realistic. "You need both," she says. Science is about fact…until it’s no longer a fact. Art is about arguing meanings, feelings, and contesting views. Science is about understanding the world, what’s in it, what’s beyond it. Art is about searching within, expanding the world, and determining perceptions. Science is about natural order. Art is about justification of thought. Science is about advancing, moving forward, discovery. Art is about searching, moving in all directions, discovery. Science is about reason and development. Art is about reason and development. Science is about discovering significance. Art is about giving significance. Science is about forming probabilities. Art is about endless possibilities. Science doesn’t need Art, but it likes having Art around. Art doesn’t need Science, but it likes having Science around.
Some people mistakenly use the terms user experience and usability almost interchangeably. However, usability is increasingly being used to refer specifically to the ease with which users can complete their intended tasks, and is closely associated with usability testing . Therefore, many perceive usability to be a rather tactical aspect of product design. In contrast, UX professionals use the term user experience much more broadly, to cover everything ranging from ease of use to user engagement to visual appeal. User experience better captures all of the psychological and behavioral aspects of users’ interactions with products.
Visual comp = comprehensive layout or comprehensive, usually shortened to comp , is the page layout of a proposed design as initially presented by the designer to a client, showing the relative positions of text and illustrations before the specific content of those elements has been decided on, as a rough draft of the final layout in which to build around.

The screen is the basic unit of an interface. Screens can be represented in different ways either by showing their full or partial size. Most screens in this notation are shown with a thicker black outline and an optional title above in the top left.
Screens are tied together with user actions in order to tell a story. Each story may have a scenario as a starting point that triggers the narrative and provides a background context. The story then unfolds as action arrows (with optional events, transitions or conditionals) are used to describe what the user has done with the interface (clicks, drags, key presses, etc). All user actions are conveyed in red and all actionable items are shown in blue.

Achieving variation of your ideas is a very powerful quality that sketching in particular affords. Designers in early phases often diverge conceptually in order to generate more ideas which can be further discussed, evaluated and selected from. This sketching notation also supports the ability to branch off with multiple related ideas. Here, this is mainly done by using lettering (A, B, C, D, etc.) and vertically aligning the alternatives. Notes in this notation are mostly used to help the designer with a potential discussion - sketches are conversation starters after all. In this context, notes are self targeted reminders with the intention of raising advantages, disadvantages, and uncertainties related to sketched out ideas.

Work through each of the items in the list and mark your site/system as either conforming or not conforming Guidelines are context specific. If you feel that a guideline does not apply to your site, it's OK to ignore it. These guidelines are purposefully expressed as positive statements, so that when you feed the results back to the design team you can identify some strengths of the design before you launch into the problems
