Artificial intelligence and expert systems can be used to both simulate human mental processes and allow computers to think independently. Expert systems are applications that do not require common sense, are generally well understood, can be described objectively, and where human expertise is scarce. While expert systems have advantages like permanent expertise and consistent results, they also have disadvantages like a lack of common sense and inability to explain logic. People and machines each have their own strengths when it comes to decision making.
8. "The aim of Artificial Intelligence is to create intelligent machines and through this, to understand the principles of intelligence. At the moment, we can settle for creating less stupid machines.” -John L. Gordon
21. Decision Support Don’t trust a machine to make a full decision? Can’t remember everything and need a little help? Want to be reminded of situations to consider? … decision support is for you!
22. Decision Making Are you unfamiliar with a particular area? Don’t want to hire a real expert? Don’t want an industrial disaster? … a decision making system is for you! Have smaller decisions to make?
25. IF the infection is a primary bacteremia AND the site of the culture is a sterile site AND the suspected portal of entry is the gastrointestinal tract THEN there is suggestive evidence (.7) that the infection is bacterioid
26. Advantages Permanent expertise Expertise easily reproduced Consistent Results Can hold significant amounts of information Inexpensive Consider transactions that humans overlook
27. Disadvantages Lack of human common sense Difficult to promote creative responses Cannot explain logic No response Lack of flexibility
