The lakes and ponds of Osterville
On Cape Cod you are never far away
from a pond adventure. Local legend
has it that in addition to our miles of
Atlantic Ocean beaches, we have 365
Cape lakes and ponds, one for every
day of the year. If you live in or around
Osterville, I am sure you are familiar
with residential Dowses Beach, my
favourite. I’ve spent the better part of
the last quarter century basking on the
white, soft sands of Dowses but never
realized there were so many lovely
ponds so close by.
Thirteen of Cape Cod’s sun-kissed
sparkling ponds are located in
Osterville. The generic Cape Cod
term ‘kettle pond’ refers to the many
bodies of water that dot the Cape.
During the Ice Age, glaciers blanketed
our peninsula. As they melted, ponds
were formed here.
Many are surrounded by private
properties and impossible to access,
but this does not preclude their
rich histories.
Ishem Pond has an estuarial
connection to Osterville’s North
Bay. During World War II, units that
stormed Pacific beaches trained
here. Back then, sediment was stirred
up from the ocean floor which ruined
the local oyster beds. In the early
1990s, oil from underground tanks
was discovered and removed.
Parker Pond, situated between the
9th and 10th greens of Wianno Golf
Club, is rich in historical significance.
Captain Miles Standish purchased the
property in May of 1648. The Native
American asking price was two brass
kettles, one bushel of corn and 1⁄2
the fence needed to enclose a land
reservation.
There is a great debate about the
difference between a lake and a pond.
Some say the difference is in the size
or depth, others say it depends upon
the vegetation that grows in or around
the water. I was once told by a local
scientist that all non-oceanographic
bodies of water in Massachusetts are
deemed ponds by the state. I know of
only 10 Cape bodies deemed lakes.
One is here in Osterville, Crystal Lake.
Crystal Lake is part of Wianno’s
extensive compound which includes
cottages, a golf course, and a
members-only ocean front club house.
The one-minute walk from the club
house to the water wanders by a

putting green and tennis courts. The
lake, flanked by white Adirondack
chairs, has two swimming docks and
is skirted by a miniature outdoor
amphitheater formed by red and
blue benches circling a roughly
hewn wooden podium. This colorful
ambience makes Crystal Lake a
happy place for summer kids.
Here are several readily accessible
Osterville ponds waiting for you
to explore:
Little Parker Pond: I pull up on the
grass and park near a sign that reads
“Barnstable Land Trust, Preserving
Open Space and Natural Resources.”
Years ago two ancient oak trees drew
me closer to Little Parker Pond. I relied
on my tree-climbing skills gleaned
from childhood and hoisted myself
up to a perch that provided me the
perfect view. Little Parker is narrow,
almost river like.
Across the water I saw a tiny white
gazebo peeking through the green
leafed tree branches. Soft summer
breezes brushed my skin and helped
to glide a polka dotted glimpse into
view. Black and orange spots, they
flitted they flew. A Monarch butterfly,
where does she get her boundless
energy to sustain a flight from Canada
to Mexico? Today I try to revisit this
spot. Grass is tall, Queen Anne’s lace
and milkweed thick, I abort my journey
to pondside.
West Pond: Hidden in the Skunknett
Mass Audubon Sanctuary, West Pond
is located at 345 Bumps River Road.
As I walk these oak leaved trails I am
the solitary woman in the woods.
On the seashore, I love salty splashes
on my legs, love sea breezes that tousle
my hair, love the energy. But here in the
woods everything is calm and quiet.

The only sounds are the rustle of
leaves and the trill of a woodpecker’s
tree trunk taps as he searches for his
noonday meal.
The name Skunknett likely comes
from the Algonquin Indian word
“Ouschankamaug,” which means
an eel fishing place. Eels here are
catadromous fish that can live in
fresh or brackish waters and embark
on a sea migration to spawn.
This sanctuary’s 149 acres are open
from dawn to dusk. Admission is free
for Mass Audubon members. A few
dollars, on the honor system, for
nonmembers can be placed in the
collection pipe.
Well-marked trails lead me through
woodland & wetland habitat provid-
ing a good spot to observe bird
life. Black-crowned night heron,
ospreys and migrating ducks make
Skunknett their home. Here White
Cedar trees, rare along the Atlantic
Coast, regenerate near swamp’s
moist edge.
I wind my way through tunnels of
trees that must be hundreds of years
old. Left, right? I’m reminded of the
scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz.
Which way should I veer? I decide
to turn left and wander down the
dappled sunlit corridor. First I hear
her, babbling water. Then I see her,
West Pond, punctuated by hundreds
of water lilies and lily pads. I follow
the path to a tiny footbridge and
traverse the inlet. Upon these dozen
worn wooden planks I pause briefly
to take in the view, inhale, exhale.
Then I saunter up a tree rooted stair-
case and introspectively follow the
looped trail back to civilization.
Joshua’s Pond: A clear calm place
for families to swim and picnic,
Joshua’s Pond is the only life-
guarded pond in Osterville. It has a
restroom and trails to hike around.
If I were to have a picnic here, I may
set up my blanket on the green-
grassed knoll overlooking this kettle
pond. I’d hold on tight to the rail that
leads down steep steps to a narrow
beach and bright blue waters. In
these waters, some of the cleanest
in Massachusetts, I’d float on my
back, stare into cerulean skies
surrounded by emerald, jade and
olive-green forests.
Micah’s Pond: Also a kettle pond,
Micah’s is accessible and has a Town
Way to Water but you must look
closely for ingress. One tell-tale
way to find her location is to look

Park nearby and hike the woods to
one of Barnstable’s infamous rites
of passage.
For years generations of teenagers
would visit here. They’d stand on
a rock or climb a wooden platform,
grasp a rope (allegedly strong and
sturdy because it was hoisted from
the Steamship Authority,) and swing
30 feet out over pond’s water before
dropping with a splash, sometimes
a backflip, into Micah’s.
I remember, years ago, Cape Cod
boys bringing me here but I never
had the courage to climb up, clutch
the rope, sway over the precipice
and drop into the pond.
Today I hike the trails in search of
the rope. I’ll probably never find it,
which way to go? As I walk along
my instincts lead me left, closer
to the water. I stand on a tiny cliff
thinking this seems like the place,
but no rope.
It’s pretty here, calm waters, billowy-
clouded skies. Looking up I notice
many tree branches snapped off,
probably from our recent winter
storms. As my gaze shifts upward
I see it. “Wait, what’s that?” And
yep, there she hangs, weathered,
shortened, frayed, but no longer
useable. But I found it: The Rope!

They Persisted
Osterville’s Women on the Forefront
of the Suffragist Movement
Rev. Anna Howard Shaw
They were mothers, doctors, ministers, and
history makers. They were women who would
make a difference. And they did it all right here
in Osterville. And for them, in the words of
Susan B. Anthony, “failure was not an option.”
In the late 1890s, Wianno served as a summer
colony to Anna Howard Shaw, Lucy E. Anthony
(Susan B.’s niece), and Ellen Wright Garrison
(wife of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, Jr.).
These women were prime forces behind the
adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women
the right to vote.
For Garrison, being a suffragist was in her genes. Her mother, Martha
Coffin Wright, and her aunt, Lucretia Coffin Mott, were leaders of the
Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. Despite her Quaker background, Mott
was an impassioned speaker on behalf of women’s rights. Wright was
an ardent supporter of abolitionists with her New York house being
a stop on her close friend Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad.
The Garrisons were summer residents in Wianno with several properties
on Sea View and Wianno Avenues. Osterville’s Daniel brothers, known for
their construction savvy, built most of their houses.
In a letter dated February 15, 1900, Garrison wrote to one of her daughters:
“We had a wonderful meeting last evening. The church was packed –
seats, aisles, standing room and all. It was most uncomfortable...Poor SBA
[Susan B. Anthony] will have to use her tired lungs anew. She bears the strain
wonderfully and Rev. Anna
[Howard Shaw] is at her side
every minute...”
Rev. Anna Howard Shaw was
a woman ahead of her time,
and she was also Garrison’s
neighbor further down Sea
View Avenue.

OSTERVILLESUFFRAGISTS
Anna Howard Shaw studied at Boston
University where she became one of the
first female ordained Methodist ministers.
She was the only woman in her class of 42,
and found it unfair that the male students
were given free rooms in the dorms and
paid only $1.25 for board while she had to
rent a room on her own for $2. Her meals
were extra.
It was during this time that Shaw became
involved in the temperance and suffragist
movements – attending many meetings
in Boston.
“You can’t win two causes at once,”
advised her mentor Susan B. Anthony.
“You’re merely scattering your energies.
Begin at the beginning. Win suffrage for
women, and the rest will follow.”
And follow it did. Anna Shaw went on to
receive her medical degree from Boston
University while continuing to serve her
assigned parish in Dennis.

Rev. Shaw traveled the world for suffragist

Newspaper reviews cited Anna as being
“there with the goods” and her audiences
were “entranced” and “sometimes on the
brink of tears and at other times rippling
with laughter.”
At Garrison’s urging, Anna purchased
property on Sea View Avenue in 1892,
and with the help of the Daniel brothers,
built a cottage that she aptly named
“The Haven.” Before she died in 1916,
she gave the property to her companion

The Cape has long been known to
attract creative people, including
artists, authors, musicians, movie
actors and television personalities.
A few of Hollywood’s famous have
discovered the hidden pleasures of
a respite in Osterville. Residents of
the village may have been secretly
star-struck, but they rarely intruded
on celebrities during their precious
down time in Osterville.
The Cape Playhouse in Dennis
was the starting point for two of
the actors.
Acclaimed actress Lee Remick’s
first acting job was at the Cape
Playhouse when she was sixteen.
Later in her career, Remick starred
in The Days of Wine and Roses
with Jack Lemmon, and The Omen
with Gregory Peck, as well as other
movies and plays.
Remick bought her 1934 Georgian
Colonial located in Osterville’s Pine
Island in 1979. Pine Island overlooks
North Bay and connects to Seapuit
Road by a bridge and causeway.
Remick enjoyed the house with her
children and husband, producer Kip
Gowans, for 12 years before dying
of cancer in 1991. Her daughter,
Kate Minelian, recalls the family
favorite for ice cream was Four Seas
in nearby Centerville. Her mother
loved antiquing on Rte. 6A, visiting
Nickerson’s Auction House, going
to Crosby’s Snack Bar
(now the Chart Room),
but most of all, she recalls,
“we loved sailing our Hereschoff
in North Bay and West Bay, and
cruising in the Whaler around
Prince Cove and Seapuit River.”
Local historian and author Paul
Chesbro remembers how his
mother Grace sold vegetables
and flowers to Ms. Remick from
their garden on Scudder Road.
He also remembers that she raised
money for the Osterville Historical
Society and agreed to be the
featured guest at fundraisers.
Frank Langella was a friend and
frequent guest of Bunny Mellon
and her daughter Eliza Lloyd, who
lived in Oyster Harbors.

Langella won numerous awards
in theatre and was nominated for
an Academy Award for his role
in Frost/Nixon in 2008.
According to Meryl Gordon’s book,
Bunny Mellon, Langella met Bunny
and her daughter Eliza in 1961 at the
Cape Playhouse in Dennis when he
was twenty-three and acting in the
comedy Under the Yum Yum Tree.
Eliza was working at the Playhouse
and they became friends. Langella
stayed friends with Bunny Mellon
for fifty-two years and in 2013, he
delivered a eulogy at her funeral.
He remembered a day in 1961
when he went to lunch and was
shocked to find the other guests
were President and Mrs. Kennedy,
Estelle Adaire, and Noel Coward.
Bob Vila, former star of This Old
House, lived in Osterville and
Cambridge, Mass. After leaving
his hit show, Vila became a spokes-
man for Sears and hosted Bob Vila’s
Home Again for sixteen seasons.
Vila was often seen by sailors in
his lobster boat and lived in Oyster
Harbors. Villagers remember seeing
him at Our Lady of Assumption
church on Wianno Ave.
Gene Rayburn, the host of game-
show The Match Game, lived on
Sea View Ave. Osterville was his
primary residence until 1985.
Rayburn commuted to Hollywood
from Osterville every two weeks
where he would spend two days
taping twelve shows.
Rayburn’s wife Helen Ticknor had

had a Crosby Curfew boat designed by
the late William Daniel Knott of Barnstable
built at the Crosby Boat Yard. The Warners
loved to sail in the bays off Osterville and
their boat is now in the collection of the
Osterville Historical Museum.
Actor Adam Sandler wasn’t an Osterville
resident but spent a summer here filming
the movie I Hate You, Dad in a house
on Sea View Avenue. He could be seen
dining at Wimpy’s with his wife and
family, and was very friendly to fans.
Sandler liked to eat at the Village Café
on Main Street, and the owner at the
time, Jason Warren, named a sandwich
after him.
“Make it a good day today!” was the
famous sign-off of former Good
Morning America host David Hartman
during his years on the show from
1975-1987.
Hartman and his family rented a house

David was often seen at the Piccadilly

his family.
Osterville has been a place of tranquility,
privacy, and escape for many celebrities.
So you never know whom you’ll bump
into when you’re cruising the shops,
sailing in the bay, or dining in the village.
What to do if you spot a celebrity?
Absolutely nothing. Or maybe name-

No harm in a little “guess who I saw?”

Jenn Wass takes it personally
at Pocket Full of Posies
Walk into Pocket Full of Posies and
wind your way through a menagerie
of downy-soft stuffed animals,
snuggly snowsuits, shimmering tulle
tutu skirts, hand-smocked dresses,
nautical sailor suits, and classic baby
books. Since 2002 the shop on
Wianno Ave. has welcomed proud
parents and doting grandparents to
browse through coo-worthy items
for infants through preteens.
In this era of online shopping, the
shop allows shoppers to slow down,
hold an item to the light, feel the
heft of the fabric, match colors,
and determine if this is the special
item for your precious bundle. And
if you just can’t decide, the store’s
knowledgeable staff will offer
their expertise.
Owner Jenn Wass understands
that people still crave the kind
of customer service that makes
shopping a personal and fun
experience.
And she should
know. Wass has
been working in
retail all of her adult life. She
began her career in another
children’s shop when she was just
a teen, summering in the village,
when she worked as a clerk at the
former Abigail’s on Wianno Ave.
Born and raised in Longmeadow,
Mass., Jenn summered in Osterville
all her life. She attended college
at Simmons in Boston, studying in
the Prince Program of Retailing.
She transferred to the University of
Colorado in Boulder, from which she
graduated, then worked briefly in
shops on Newbury Street in Boston.
She then spent the next 14 years
working for Patagonia, eventually
heading up its retail division.
But Jenn had always considered
Osterville her second home, and she
had always known that she wanted
to own a children’s shop. Her dream
was born during that wonderful time
working at Abigail’s. She noted,
“When I was done with the corporate
world, I decided to move back
to Osterville and and open my
own store.”

POCKETFULLOFPOSIES
For 17 years Pocket Full of Posies
has been an anchor in the village, a
place where generations have come
to revel in the sweet pleasures of
childhood. Wass has been a pillar
of her adopted community herself,
giving back with years of service
to organizations – including time as
a trustee of the Library.
The store’s primary goal is to be
a respite in a hectic world. “The
purpose of Pocket Full of Posies,”
says Wass, “is to be a place to
gather and have fun, a place for
nostalgic memories to form.” She
has outfitted a generation of kids,
watching them grow from one
clothing size to the next – while
seeing them grow into fine adults.
“I remember distinctly seeing one
of my customers, who I’d outfitted
since he was a baby, drive through
the village in his own car, and I was
shocked when it sunk in that that
he was now in the driver’s seat.”
This store is all about families, and
particularly so for Jenn Wass. One
specialty line that customers
continue coming back for year
after year are the handmade cards
crafted by her mother Judy. Using
fabric, appliques, buttons, and more,
Judy makes one-of-a-kind cards
for births, holidays, birthdays, and
special occasions. “She takes special
orders and personalizes cards for
people,” says her proud daughter.
“They’re beautiful and fun...and who
doesn’t love a personalized card?”
Wass also carries a private-label
line of sweaters and the shop also
provides on-site monogramming,
which is very popular with shoppers
who remember fondly a time when
gifts were personal and intimate.
Pocket Full of Posies is a special
place where childhood memories
are made and passed on from
generation to generation.

BUNNYMELLON
www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org
Osterville has been a summer colony for elite seasonal visitors and home-
owners since the late 1800s, when notables like Louis Comfort Tiffany and
William Lloyd Garrison began to build “cottages” along Sea View Avenue
and nearby lanes in the Wianno area of the village. In the 1920s, Oyster
Harbors, previously known as Osterville’s Grand Island, emerged as a
popular private enclave for a new generation of Osterville’s summer
residents, many from the industrial and financial worlds, including the
Du Ponts and the Mellons.
Rachel “Bunny” Mellon and her husband Paul purchased a 26-acre Oyster
Harbors estate, which included a 7,000 square foot main house plus several
outbuildings, a tennis court and pool, in the 1950s.
The couple’s lavish lifestyle belied the simpler life they enjoyed here in
Osterville. Their primary home was the 4,000-acre Oak Spring Farm in
Virginia, but in addition to their Oyster Harbors estate, the couple
maintained homes in Paris, Antigua, New York City, and Nantucket.
Bunny has been referred to in the press as heiress, socialite, hostess, arts
patron and style icon. Both Givenchy and Balenciaga designed for her
and called her a friend. But she ultimately became most well known for her
green thumb. An avid “amateur” gardener, she famously asked Balenciaga
and Givenchy to design her gardening clothes. Perhaps it was her perfectly
understated Oyster Harbors gardens that inspired her friend Jackie’s
husband President John F. Kennedy to ask her to design the White House
Rose Garden.
Meryl Gordon, in her biography Bunny Mellon – The Life of and American
Style Legend, describes the moment that would thrust Bunny and her
gardening talents into the public eye. “The year was 1961, and on that sunny
August morning, Bunny was sitting in her four-poster bed at her summer
home on...Oyster Harbors...gazing at the water.
”The phone rang, and it was Jackie. “’Jack’s
going to ask you to do something for him,
promise me you will do it... He wants you to
design a garden for him at the White House.’”
The Kennedys later arrived by boat from their
nearby Hyannis Port home for lunch, and it was
there at a simple picnic in an open-air waterside
shack on the Mellon’s property that the President
made his request.
The rest is botanical history. Bunny said yes
and went on to design the White House Rose
Garden as well as the White House East Garden

She also designed plantings for the John F. Kennedy
Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, and her

Bunny’s best-known legacy is the White House Rose
Garden. But along with her husband Paul, she also
cultivated a perennial garden of gifts to this community
they loved calling home. In 1957, the couple provided
matching funds to kick off a capital campaign for a new
library. When donations exceeded the match by $2,000,
they donated an additional $100,000.
When he died in 1999, Paul Mellon
bequeathed Osterville’s Dead Neck
Island, known to locals as Sampson’s
Island, to the Massachusetts Audubon
Society along with $500,000. In 2012,
Bunny donated 1.42 acres of coastal
wetlands to the Barnstable Land Trust.

The Mellons quietly supported other
local nonprofits like the Osterville
Historical Museum during their
tenure here. Bunny’s generosity
extended to local families as well.
Ned Crosby, along with his grand-
father, had been the Mellon’s sailing
companion. They allowed Ned
to dock his boat in a protected
harbor on their property, according
to Gordon’s book. Gordon writes
about a lunch where she handed
Ned an envelope “containing the
deed to the harbor front land that
he had been using.”
Bunny Mellon sold her Osterville home
to billionaire industrialist Bill Koch in
2013, and died in 2014 at the age of
103. According to Gordon, at Bunny’s
funeral, her grandson, Stacy Lloyd IV,
remarked, “I will always think of her when
I look at Cape Cod dune grass as it blows
in the breeze...”

LIBRARYKIDS
ibliophiles know that one
of the best relationships
one can have is with a
good book. Earliest memories of
this budding relationship could be
bedtime stories with mom or dad;
our learning to read in elementary
school; or visiting the local library to
apply for that very first library card.
Personally, as a Cape Cod native,
the CLAMS library system was an
instrumental part of my childhood.
I visited many of libraries on the
Cape – each one leaving a lasting
impression. But I didn’t realize what
a far-reaching impact these local
resources had on the community
I lived in until I started working at
the Osterville Village Library.
While here, I had the greatest
pleasure of working in the Library’s
Children’s department. I ran story
times, helped with programming,
and met new playful kids every
day. It was a front row seat for
watching young children grow
up at the library and seeing how
their interests and love for books
has evolved along with them. I am
proud I got to be a part of this
small community.
The Library began in 1873, and after
various relocations and librarians,
Miss Katherine (Kathy) Hinckley
became the newest and longest
serving librarian in 1917. It was Miss
Hinckley who oversaw generations
of Osterville families – who still
remember her today. Miss Kathy
was known for her stern attitude
inside the library. Judy Staples, an
Osterville native, said it was typical
to hear Hinckley say,”quiet, please –
no talking in the library.”
This may seem foreign to our patrons
today, as they know of OVL as a
community-oriented play area for
their children. On a typical day in the
Lillian Dixie Morton Children’s Room,
they watch their children indulge
in messy crafts, sing songs at story
time or just participate in some
friendly socializing.
Miss Kathy was not always strict
with the kids, and encouraged their
interests in reading. Patrons recall
a chair set up in the library where
young girls could bring their dolls
and read to them.

Ginger Stimets, another Osterville
native and retired teacher, also
remembers fondly when, “One
time, Miss Kathy allowed me to
bring Bingo, my dog at the time,
into the library because I was
reading a book to the little kids
about a little dog named Bingo.”
Today, the children know and love
this type of event, as a retired
therapy dog named Caz frequently
visits for story times.
Like Miss Kathy’s time as librarian,
we know that bringing in a furry
friend always makes for a special
reading occasion.
Today the Lillian Dixie Morton
Children’s Room is known by
patrons as a great area for
playing, reading, or studying
for children of all ages.
This was not always the
case. Cyndy Cotton, director
of the Osterville Village Library,
remarks how “in the past, the room
was geared for toddlers and pre-
schoolers. To keep our community
engaged and to stay up to date
with the needs of our patrons, we
had to evolve and include activities
that can engage the 6+ crowd.”
She sees how the room has become
more inviting, “before, we would
not see tweens in the room for days
at a time, but now we see them
every day.”

As the Children’s Department at the
Library moves forward, the focus is
always on families and their future
needs. Cyndy stresses, “we want
to keep engaging families. The
many items and kits that we offer
are, in essence, group activities
reinforcing collaborative learning.
Children work with the parents to
understand these topics.” Truly,
libraries are a place for community
and collaboration. The Osterville

it is continuing that mission today.

The current focus of the Children’s
Room is to become a hub for STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) education in the
community. In an interview, Youth
Services Librarian Jan Ham discusses
the importance of Makerspaces in
public library settings. “The growing
trend in the library community is
inquiry-based learning. Yet, we want
to stress that a Makerspace should
not take the place of books. The
library’s goal is to be the perfect
place to pair the enjoyment of book
learning with the hands-on nature
of investigative play.”
The most appealing aspect of the
Makerspace is that it can be used at
any age. Jan elaborates that, “our
hope is to have kids grow with the
Makerspace; they can use it from
one stage of life to another.”
For baby/toddler patrons, OVL
offers the Early Learning Center.
There they can find: the newly
restored and renovated dollhouse,
spaceship and train set. Then, they
graduate to the Tween Makerspace
for ages 7+, which includes take-
home kits (coding, architectural
design, electronics, etc), Legos,
crafts, a Chromebook and an iPad.
Finally, they move on to the Young
Adult/Adult Makerspace.

WORLDWARIENDS
These words are part of an entry in
Osterville resident Florence Rich’s
autograph book. Centuries before
the days of selfies and social media,
these small, decorative leather-
bound books with blank pages
served to commemorate friendships
and family memories. The popularity
of these books peaked during the
Civil War. They were filled with
personal notes, poems, drawings,
and signatures by family, friends,
and classmates.
“Florence Rich was born in Osterville
in 1870,” according to Paul Chesbro,
Osterville historian and author, who
now owns this piece of village history.
“She was one of the four children of
Seth and Augusta (Lovell) Rich. Her
mother wrote what has become
known as the “Rich Letter” of 1877.”
The letter describes the village at
the time house by house, with details
about the owners’ or residents’
lives. Mr. Chesbro added, “The first
entry in the album is 1884. In 1893,
Florence married Adrian Chadwick,
also a resident of Osterville.”
“Remember me and bear in mind a trusty
friend is hard to find…”

Hidden Gems The lakesand ponds of Osterville On Cape Cod you are never far away from a pond adventure. Local legend has it that in addition to our miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, we have 365 Cape lakes and ponds, one for every day of the year. If you live in or around Osterville, I am sure you are familiar with residential Dowses Beach, my favourite. I’ve spent the better part of the last quarter century basking on the white, soft sands of Dowses but never realized there were so many lovely ponds so close by. Thirteen of Cape Cod’s sun-kissed sparkling ponds are located in Osterville. The generic Cape Cod term ‘kettle pond’ refers to the many bodies of water that dot the Cape. During the Ice Age, glaciers blanketed our peninsula. As they melted, ponds were formed here. Many are surrounded by private properties and impossible to access, but this does not preclude their rich histories. Ishem Pond has an estuarial connection to Osterville’s North Bay. During World War II, units that stormed Pacific beaches trained here. Back then, sediment was stirred up from the ocean floor which ruined the local oyster beds. In the early 1990s, oil from underground tanks was discovered and removed. Parker Pond, situated between the 9th and 10th greens of Wianno Golf Club, is rich in historical significance. Captain Miles Standish purchased the property in May of 1648. The Native American asking price was two brass kettles, one bushel of corn and 1⁄2 the fence needed to enclose a land reservation. There is a great debate about the difference between a lake and a pond. Some say the difference is in the size or depth, others say it depends upon the vegetation that grows in or around the water. I was once told by a local scientist that all non-oceanographic bodies of water in Massachusetts are deemed ponds by the state. I know of only 10 Cape bodies deemed lakes. One is here in Osterville, Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake is part of Wianno’s extensive compound which includes cottages, a golf course, and a members-only ocean front club house. The one-minute walk from the club house to the water wanders by a cont’d OSTERVILLELAKES&PONDS www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org 5 Exploring the Skunknett River – leading from West Pond – in the Mass Audubon Skunknett River Wildlife Sanctuary. The lake, flanked by white Adirondack chairs, has two swimming docks and is skirted by a miniature outdoor amphitheater formed by red and blue benches circling a roughly hewn wooden podium. This colorful ambience makes Crystal Lake a happy place for summer kids. Here are several readily accessible Osterville ponds waiting for you to explore: Little Parker Pond: I pull up on the grass and park near a sign that reads “Barnstable Land Trust, Preserving Open Space and Natural Resources.” Years ago two ancient oak trees drew me closer to Little Parker Pond. I relied on my tree-climbing skills gleaned from childhood and hoisted myself up to a perch that provided me the perfect view. Little Parker is narrow, almost river like. Across the water I saw a tiny white gazebo peeking through the green leafed tree branches. Soft summer breezes brushed my skin and helped to glide a polka dotted glimpse into view. Black and orange spots, they flitted they flew. A Monarch butterfly, where does she get her boundless energy to sustain a flight from Canada to Mexico? Today I try to revisit this spot. Grass is tall, Queen Anne’s lace and milkweed thick, I abort my journey to pondside. West Pond: Hidden in the Skunknett Mass Audubon Sanctuary, West Pond is located at 345 Bumps River Road. As I walk these oak leaved trails I am the solitary woman in the woods. On the seashore, I love salty splashes on my legs, love sea breezes that tousle my hair, love the energy. But here in the woods everything is calm and quiet. www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Osterville’s Ponds cont’d CAPECOD Ellen Valentgas Osterville Real Estate Specialist 508.648.5086 ellen.valentgas@sothebyshomes.com ellenvalentgas.com local expertise. tailored to every client. cont’d

The only soundsare the rustle of leaves and the trill of a woodpecker’s tree trunk taps as he searches for his noonday meal. The name Skunknett likely comes from the Algonquin Indian word “Ouschankamaug,” which means an eel fishing place. Eels here are catadromous fish that can live in fresh or brackish waters and embark on a sea migration to spawn. This sanctuary’s 149 acres are open from dawn to dusk. Admission is free for Mass Audubon members. A few dollars, on the honor system, for nonmembers can be placed in the collection pipe. Well-marked trails lead me through woodland & wetland habitat provid- ing a good spot to observe bird life. Black-crowned night heron, ospreys and migrating ducks make Skunknett their home. Here White Cedar trees, rare along the Atlantic Coast, regenerate near swamp’s moist edge. I wind my way through tunnels of trees that must be hundreds of years old. Left, right? I’m reminded of the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Which way should I veer? I decide to turn left and wander down the dappled sunlit corridor. First I hear her, babbling water. Then I see her, West Pond, punctuated by hundreds of water lilies and lily pads. I follow the path to a tiny footbridge and traverse the inlet. Upon these dozen worn wooden planks I pause briefly to take in the view, inhale, exhale. Then I saunter up a tree rooted stair- case and introspectively follow the looped trail back to civilization. Joshua’s Pond: A clear calm place for families to swim and picnic, Joshua’s Pond is the only life- guarded pond in Osterville. It has a restroom and trails to hike around. If I were to have a picnic here, I may set up my blanket on the green- grassed knoll overlooking this kettle pond. I’d hold on tight to the rail that leads down steep steps to a narrow beach and bright blue waters. In these waters, some of the cleanest in Massachusetts, I’d float on my back, stare into cerulean skies surrounded by emerald, jade and olive-green forests. Micah’s Pond: Also a kettle pond, Micah’s is accessible and has a Town Way to Water but you must look closely for ingress. One tell-tale way to find her location is to look OSTERVILLELAKES&PONDS 8 www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Osterville’s Ponds cont’d

9 OSTERVILLELAKES&PONDS www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org for cars linedup along Pond Street. Park nearby and hike the woods to one of Barnstable’s infamous rites of passage. For years generations of teenagers would visit here. They’d stand on a rock or climb a wooden platform, grasp a rope (allegedly strong and sturdy because it was hoisted from the Steamship Authority,) and swing 30 feet out over pond’s water before dropping with a splash, sometimes a backflip, into Micah’s. I remember, years ago, Cape Cod boys bringing me here but I never had the courage to climb up, clutch the rope, sway over the precipice and drop into the pond. Today I hike the trails in search of the rope. I’ll probably never find it, which way to go? As I walk along my instincts lead me left, closer to the water. I stand on a tiny cliff thinking this seems like the place, but no rope. It’s pretty here, calm waters, billowy- clouded skies. Looking up I notice many tree branches snapped off, probably from our recent winter storms. As my gaze shifts upward I see it. “Wait, what’s that?” And yep, there she hangs, weathered, shortened, frayed, but no longer useable. But I found it: The Rope! – Susan Anarino

11www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org They Persisted Osterville’s Womenon the Forefront of the Suffragist Movement Rev. Anna Howard Shaw They were mothers, doctors, ministers, and history makers. They were women who would make a difference. And they did it all right here in Osterville. And for them, in the words of Susan B. Anthony, “failure was not an option.” In the late 1890s, Wianno served as a summer colony to Anna Howard Shaw, Lucy E. Anthony (Susan B.’s niece), and Ellen Wright Garrison (wife of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, Jr.). These women were prime forces behind the adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. For Garrison, being a suffragist was in her genes. Her mother, Martha Coffin Wright, and her aunt, Lucretia Coffin Mott, were leaders of the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. Despite her Quaker background, Mott was an impassioned speaker on behalf of women’s rights. Wright was an ardent supporter of abolitionists with her New York house being a stop on her close friend Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad. The Garrisons were summer residents in Wianno with several properties on Sea View and Wianno Avenues. Osterville’s Daniel brothers, known for their construction savvy, built most of their houses. In a letter dated February 15, 1900, Garrison wrote to one of her daughters: “We had a wonderful meeting last evening. The church was packed – seats, aisles, standing room and all. It was most uncomfortable...Poor SBA [Susan B. Anthony] will have to use her tired lungs anew. She bears the strain wonderfully and Rev. Anna [Howard Shaw] is at her side every minute...” Rev. Anna Howard Shaw was a woman ahead of her time, and she was also Garrison’s neighbor further down Sea View Avenue. cont’d OSTERVILLESUFFRAGISTS

Anna Howard Shawstudied at Boston University where she became one of the first female ordained Methodist ministers. She was the only woman in her class of 42, and found it unfair that the male students were given free rooms in the dorms and paid only $1.25 for board while she had to rent a room on her own for $2. Her meals were extra. It was during this time that Shaw became involved in the temperance and suffragist movements – attending many meetings in Boston. “You can’t win two causes at once,” advised her mentor Susan B. Anthony. “You’re merely scattering your energies. Begin at the beginning. Win suffrage for women, and the rest will follow.” And follow it did. Anna Shaw went on to receive her medical degree from Boston University while continuing to serve her assigned parish in Dennis. Rev. 13www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Lucy E. Anthony Rev.Shaw traveled the world for suffragist conventions, parades, lecture circuits, and other events. She was on the campaign trail constantly with audience members who included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Frederick Douglas and U.S. presidents. For over 11 years, she served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Newspaper reviews cited Anna as being “there with the goods” and her audiences were “entranced” and “sometimes on the brink of tears and at other times rippling with laughter.” At Garrison’s urging, Anna purchased property on Sea View Avenue in 1892, and with the help of the Daniel brothers, built a cottage that she aptly named “The Haven.” Before she died in 1916, she gave the property to her companion of thirty years, Lucy E. Anthony. The Cape haslong been known to attract creative people, including artists, authors, musicians, movie actors and television personalities. A few of Hollywood’s famous have discovered the hidden pleasures of a respite in Osterville. Residents of the village may have been secretly star-struck, but they rarely intruded on celebrities during their precious down time in Osterville. The Cape Playhouse in Dennis was the starting point for two of the actors. Acclaimed actress Lee Remick’s first acting job was at the Cape Playhouse when she was sixteen. Later in her career, Remick starred in The Days of Wine and Roses with Jack Lemmon, and The Omen with Gregory Peck, as well as other movies and plays. Remick bought her 1934 Georgian Colonial located in Osterville’s Pine Island in 1979. Pine Island overlooks North Bay and connects to Seapuit Road by a bridge and causeway. Remick enjoyed the house with her children and husband, producer Kip Gowans, for 12 years before dying of cancer in 1991. Her daughter, Kate Minelian, recalls the family favorite for ice cream was Four Seas in nearby Centerville. Her mother loved antiquing on Rte. 6A, visiting Nickerson’s Auction House, going to Crosby’s Snack Bar (now the Chart Room), but most of all, she recalls, “we loved sailing our Hereschoff in North Bay and West Bay, and cruising in the Whaler around Prince Cove and Seapuit River.” Local historian and author Paul Chesbro remembers how his mother Grace sold vegetables and flowers to Ms. Remick from their garden on Scudder Road. According to Meryl Gordon’s book, Bunny Mellon, Langella met Bunny and her daughter Eliza in 1961 at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis when he was twenty-three and acting in the comedy Under the Yum Yum Tree. Eliza was working at the Playhouse and they became friends. Langella stayed friends with Bunny Mellon for fifty-two years and in 2013, he delivered a eulogy at her funeral. He remembered a day in 1961 when he went to lunch and was shocked to find the other guests were President and Mrs. Kennedy, Estelle Adaire, and Noel Coward. Bob Vila, former star of This Old House, lived in Osterville and Cambridge, Mass. After leaving his hit show, Vila became a spokes- man for Sears and hosted Bob Vila’s Home Again for sixteen seasons. Vila was often seen by sailors in his lobster boat and lived in Oyster Harbors. Villagers remember seeing him at Our Lady of Assumption church on Wianno Ave. Gene Rayburn, the host of game- show The Match Game, lived on Sea View Ave. Osterville was his primary residence until 1985. After megastar Elizabeth Taylor’s second divorce from actor Richard Burton, Taylor met her sixth husband, John Warner, a Republican politician from Virginia. Warner was married previously to Catherine Conover Mellon, daughter of Paul Mellon, so Warner visited here in Osterville at the summer home of his children’s grandparents. During their timehere, Taylor and her husband stayed at Oyster Harbors and had a Crosby Curfew boat designed by the late William Daniel Knott of Barnstable built at the Crosby Boat Yard. The Warners loved to sail in the bays off Osterville and their boat is now in the collection of the Osterville Historical Museum. Actor Adam Sandler wasn’t an Osterville resident but spent a summer here filming the movie I Hate You, Dad in a house on Sea View Avenue. He could be seen dining at Wimpy’s with his wife and family, and was very friendly to fans. Sandler liked to eat at the Village Café on Main Street, and the owner at the time, Jason Warren, named a sandwich after him. “Make it a good day today!” was the famous sign-off of former Good Morning America host David Hartman during his years on the show from 1975-1987. Hartman and his family rented a house on Wianno Ave. which gave him a rest from his 16 hour days at the network. David was often seen at the Piccadilly Deli (now Crisp) having breakfast with his family. Osterville has been a place of tranquility, privacy, and escape for many celebrities. So you never know whom you’ll bump into when you’re cruising the shops, sailing in the bay, or dining in the village. What to do if you spot a celebrity? Absolutely nothing. POCKETFULLOFPOSIES 24 Kids’ Couture Jenn Wasstakes it personally at Pocket Full of Posies Walk into Pocket Full of Posies and wind your way through a menagerie of downy-soft stuffed animals, snuggly snowsuits, shimmering tulle tutu skirts, hand-smocked dresses, nautical sailor suits, and classic baby books. Since 2002 the shop on Wianno Ave. has welcomed proud parents and doting grandparents to browse through coo-worthy items for infants through preteens. In this era of online shopping, the shop allows shoppers to slow down, hold an item to the light, feel the heft of the fabric, match colors, and determine if this is the special item for your precious bundle. And if you just can’t decide, the store’s knowledgeable staff will offer their expertise. Owner Jenn Wass understands that people still crave the kind of customer service that makes shopping a personal and fun experience. And she should know. Wass has been working in retail all of her adult life. She began her career in another children’s shop when she was just a teen, summering in the village, when she worked as a clerk at the former Abigail’s on Wianno Ave. Born and raised in Longmeadow, Mass., Jenn summered in Osterville all her life. She attended college at Simmons in Boston, studying in the Prince Program of Retailing. She transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder, from which she graduated, then worked briefly in shops on Newbury Street in Boston. She then spent the next 14 years working for Patagonia, eventually heading up its retail division. But Jenn had always considered Osterville her second home, and she had always known that she wanted to own a children’s shop. Her dream was born during that wonderful time working at Abigail’s. She noted, “When I was done with the corporate world, I decided to move back to Osterville and and open my own store.”

25 POCKETFULLOFPOSIES For 17 yearsPocket Full of Posies has been an anchor in the village, a place where generations have come to revel in the sweet pleasures of childhood. Wass has been a pillar of her adopted community herself, giving back with years of service to organizations – including time as a trustee of the Library. The store’s primary goal is to be a respite in a hectic world. “The purpose of Pocket Full of Posies,” says Wass, “is to be a place to gather and have fun, a place for nostalgic memories to form.” She has outfitted a generation of kids, watching them grow from one clothing size to the next – while seeing them grow into fine adults. “I remember distinctly seeing one of my customers, who I’d outfitted since he was a baby, drive through the village in his own car, and I was shocked when it sunk in that that he was now in the driver’s seat.” This store is all about families, and particularly so for Jenn Wass. One specialty line that customers continue coming back for year after year are the handmade cards crafted by her mother Judy. Using fabric, appliques, buttons, and more, Judy makes one-of-a-kind cards for births, holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. “She takes special orders and personalizes cards for people,” says her proud daughter. “They’re beautiful and fun...and who doesn’t love a personalized card?” Wass also carries a private-label line of sweaters and the shop also provides on-site monogramming, which is very popular with shoppers who remember fondly a time when gifts were personal and intimate. 27 BUNNYMELLON www.OstervilleVillageLibrary.org Osterville has beena summer colony for elite seasonal visitors and home- owners since the late 1800s, when notables like Louis Comfort Tiffany and William Lloyd Garrison began to build “cottages” along Sea View Avenue and nearby lanes in the Wianno area of the village. In the 1920s, Oyster Harbors, previously known as Osterville’s Grand Island, emerged as a popular private enclave for a new generation of Osterville’s summer residents, many from the industrial and financial worlds, including the Du Ponts and the Mellons. Rachel “Bunny” Mellon and her husband Paul purchased a 26-acre Oyster Harbors estate, which included a 7,000 square foot main house plus several outbuildings, a tennis court and pool, in the 1950s. The couple’s lavish lifestyle belied the simpler life they enjoyed here in Osterville. Their primary home was the 4,000-acre Oak Spring Farm in Virginia, but in addition to their Oyster Harbors estate, the couple maintained homes in Paris, Antigua, New York City, and Nantucket. Bunny has been referred to in the press as heiress, socialite, hostess, arts patron and style icon. Both Givenchy and Balenciaga designed for her and called her a friend. But she ultimately became most well known for her green thumb. An avid “amateur” gardener, she famously asked Balenciaga and Givenchy to design her gardening clothes. Perhaps it was her perfectly understated Oyster Harbors gardens that inspired her friend Jackie’s husband President John F. Kennedy to ask her to design the White House Rose Garden. Meryl Gordon, in her biography Bunny Mellon – The Life of and American Style Legend, describes the moment that would thrust Bunny and her gardening talents into the public eye. “The year was 1961, and on that sunny August morning, Bunny was sitting in her four-poster bed at her summer home on...Oyster Harbors...gazing at the water. ”The phone rang, and it was Jackie. “’Jack’s going to ask you to do something for him, promise me you will do it... He wants you to design a garden for him at the White House.’” The Kennedys later arrived by boat from their nearby Hyannis Port home for lunch, and it was there at a simple picnic in an open-air waterside shack on the Mellon’s property that the President made his request. The rest is botanical history. Bunny said yes and went on to design the White House Rose Garden as well as the White House East Garden Weeding in Balenciaga cont’d The White House Rose Garden designed by Bunny Mellon Rachel “Bunny” Mellon From Oyster Harbors to the White House

(dedicated as theJacqueline Kennedy Garden in 1965). She also designed plantings for the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, and her planting design can be seen at the President John F. Kennedy Gravesite. Bunny’s best-known legacy is the White House Rose Garden. But along with her husband Paul, she also cultivated a perennial garden of gifts to this community they loved calling home. In 1957, the couple provided matching funds to kick off a capital campaign for a new library. When donations exceeded the match by $2,000, they donated an additional $100,000. When he died in 1999, Paul Mellon bequeathed Osterville’s Dead Neck Island, known to locals as Sampson’s Island, to the Massachusetts Audubon Society along with $500,000. In 2012, Bunny donated 1.42 acres of coastal wetlands to the Barnstable Land Trust. President John F. 30 BUNNYMELLON The Mellons quietlysupported other local nonprofits like the Osterville Historical Museum during their tenure here. Bunny’s generosity extended to local families as well. Ned Crosby, along with his grand- father, had been the Mellon’s sailing companion. They allowed Ned to dock his boat in a protected harbor on their property, according to Gordon’s book. Gordon writes about a lunch where she handed Ned an envelope “containing the deed to the harbor front land that he had been using.” Bunny Mellon sold her Osterville home to billionaire industrialist Bill Koch in 2013, and died in 2014 at the age of 103. According to Gordon, at Bunny’s funeral, her grandson, Stacy Lloyd IV, remarked, “I will always think of her when I look at Cape Cod dune grass as it blows in the breeze...” – Claudia Mahoney Bunny Mellon cont’d In 1958, Paul & Bunny Mellon donated $200,000 to the Osterville Village Library. 33 LIBRARYKIDS ibliophiles know thatone of the best relationships one can have is with a good book. Earliest memories of this budding relationship could be bedtime stories with mom or dad; our learning to read in elementary school; or visiting the local library to apply for that very first library card. Personally, as a Cape Cod native, the CLAMS library system was an instrumental part of my childhood. I visited many of libraries on the Cape – each one leaving a lasting impression. But I didn’t realize what a far-reaching impact these local resources had on the community I lived in until I started working at the Osterville Village Library. While here, I had the greatest pleasure of working in the Library’s Children’s department. I ran story times, helped with programming, and met new playful kids every day. It was a front row seat for watching young children grow up at the library and seeing how their interests and love for books has evolved along with them. I am proud I got to be a part of this small community. The Library began in 1873, and after various relocations and librarians, Miss Katherine (Kathy) Hinckley became the newest and longest serving librarian in 1917. It was Miss Hinckley who oversaw generations of Osterville families – who still remember her today. Miss Kathy was known for her stern attitude inside the library. Judy Staples, an Osterville native, said it was typical to hear Hinckley say,”quiet, please – no talking in the library.” This may seem foreign to our patrons today, as they know of OVL as a community-oriented play area for their children. On a typical day in the Lillian Dixie Morton Children’s Room, they watch their children indulge in messy crafts, sing songs at story time or just participate in some friendly socializing. Miss Kathy was not always strict with the kids, and encouraged their interests in reading. Patrons recall a chair set up in the library where young girls could bring their dolls and read to them. LIBRARYKIDS Ginger Stimets, anotherOsterville native and retired teacher, also remembers fondly when, “One time, Miss Kathy allowed me to bring Bingo, my dog at the time, into the library because I was reading a book to the little kids about a little dog named Bingo.” Today, the children know and love this type of event, as a retired therapy dog named Caz frequently visits for story times. Like Miss Kathy’s time as librarian, we know that bringing in a furry friend always makes for a special reading occasion. Today the Lillian Dixie Morton Children’s Room is known by patrons as a great area for playing, reading, or studying for children of all ages. This was not always the case. Cyndy Cotton, director of the Osterville Village Library, remarks how “in the past, the room was geared for toddlers and pre- schoolers. To keep our community engaged and to stay up to date with the needs of our patrons, we had to evolve and include activities that can engage the 6+ crowd.” She sees how the room has become more inviting, “before, we would not see tweens in the room for days at a time, but now we see them every day.” Children’s Makerspace Children ages 6 and up – and their parents – can explore their world by using hands-on STEM and art materials. This “Library of Things” is continuously growing to keep up with our patron’s interests. As the Children’s Department at the Library moves forward, the focus is always on families and their future needs. Cyndy stresses, “we want to keep engaging families. The many items and kits that we offer are, in essence, group activities reinforcing collaborative learning. Children work with the parents to understand these topics.” Truly, libraries are a place for community and collaboration. The Osterville Village Library has made it its mission to inspire lifelong learning for children since its inception; and it is continuing that mission today. – Victoria Fiske 37 874 Main Street Osterville 508-428-0500 www.edenskincareandmakeup.com What’s Up for Kids? cont’d The current focus of the Children’s Room is to become a hub for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in the community. In an interview, Youth Services Librarian Jan Ham discusses the importance of Makerspaces in public library settings. “The growing trend in the library community is inquiry-based learning. Yet, we want to stress that a Makerspace should not take the place of books. The library’s goal is to be the perfect place to pair the enjoyment of book learning with the hands-on nature of investigative play.” The most appealing aspect of the Makerspace is that it can be used at any age. Jan elaborates that, “our hope is to have kids grow with the Makerspace; they can use it from one stage of life to another.” For baby/toddler patrons, OVL offers the Early Learning Center. There they can find: the newly restored and renovated dollhouse, spaceship and train set. Then, they graduate to the Tween Makerspace for ages 7+, which includes take- home kits (coding, architectural design, electronics, etc), Legos, crafts, a Chromebook and an iPad. Finally, they move on to the Young Adult/Adult Makerspace.

ADVERTISERINDEX 88 WORLDWARIENDS These words arepart of an entry in Osterville resident Florence Rich’s autograph book. Centuries before the days of selfies and social media, these small, decorative leather- bound books with blank pages served to commemorate friendships and family memories. The popularity of these books peaked during the Civil War. They were filled with personal notes, poems, drawings, and signatures by family, friends, and classmates. “Florence Rich was born in Osterville in 1870,” according to Paul Chesbro, Osterville historian and author, who now owns this piece of village history. “She was one of the four children of Seth and Augusta (Lovell) Rich. Her mother wrote what has become known as the “Rich Letter” of 1877.” The letter describes the village at the time house by house, with details about the owners’ or residents’ lives. Mr. Chesbro added, “The first entry in the album is 1884. In 1893, Florence married Adrian Chadwick, also a resident of Osterville.” “Remember me and bear in mind a trusty friend is hard to find…” A Sign of the Times Autograph Books
