Exploring and Integrating UX in Open Source Software Development Victoria Bondarchuk
Slides for my talk at ApacheCon 2016
https://apacheconeu2016.sched.org/event/8ULf/exploring-and-integrating-ux-in-open-source-software-development-victoria-bondarchuk-seoul-tech-society
The importance of introducing usability activities into free open source software development has been acknowledged in the research and by the community, yet FOSS products have been criticized for having little or no emphasis on usability. The decentralized and engineering-driven approach of open source projects can conflict with usability methodologies. We will review existing cases of UX design contribution to open source projects, discuss how designers can become part of the community and what engineers can do to improve usability of the software they build.
What makes Drupal the right choice for 26% of all .edu sites?
Hear about four challenges that most higher education websites face -- and how Drupal addresses those challenges.

This presentation is a summary of our first event, it will give you a walk you through the technical capabilities of the major voice platforms (Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Siri, MS Cortana, Bixby etc), examine how they can be leveraged to build better products, and give an introduction to the voice-specific design process.

Thinking about accessibility in every step of your process ensures legal compliance but helps create a well-designed, more inclusive product that reaches a broader range of people. Testing your site or application for common accessibility user experience problems helps reduce barriers between you and your intended audience.

Developers use Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) to maintain and evolve software systems. IDEs facilitate development activities such as navigating, reading, understanding, and writing source code. Development activities are composed of many basic events, such as browsing the source code of a method or editing the body of a method. We call these actions “interaction data”. We believe that collecting, processing, and exploiting these interactions at run-time can potentially augment the productivity of developers.
Our goal is to create self-adaptive IDEs: IDEs that collect, mine, and leverage the interactions of developers to better support the developers’ workflow. We envision a development environment that automatically and seamlessly adapts itself to support developers while maintaining and evolving software systems. To reach our goal, we will develop means to reshape the user interface of the IDE, interaction-based recommenders, and integrate live and adaptive visualizations inside the IDE.
As a first step towards our vision, we have developed DFlow, a tool that non-intrusively records all IDE interactions while a developer is programming. At the moment DFlow collects all the interactions between the developer and the IDE, and enables retrospective analysis by means of software visualizations.
In your organization, you frequently need to train others on how things are done. Whether it's for customers or new employees, there is information you know that they will benefit from.
Almost every organization offers some form of training or classes or seminars to employees (and sometimes to customers) but very few are succeeding in getting those “students” to learn. In this workshop, we will explore the use of technology and E-Learning environments to improve the actual knowledge transfer in your organization.
Much of today's learning can take place on-line in organized, downloadable segments and we'll show you the best way to create and deliver your important content using technology. We'll also discuss on-demand reference systems and the types of information that is best made available from a webpage or smartphone instead of asking people to memorize it. No more wasting time with on-the-job training or day-long classes that are not effective.
Here are some of the topics that will be covered:
• How to design courses so that learning really takes place
• What kinds of knowledge or information is best taught and what is best made available from a Wiki or other reference system?
• Tools for “recording” PowerPoint presentations (and other applications) so that others can learn on their own time
• The use of new media (video and audio) in your e-learning courseware
• Learning Management Systems and keeping track of learner’s progress

Have you ever contributed to an open source project? There are tonnes of different ways to help out, and we want to show you how: From GitHub workflows and general contributing as well as more specific Icinga related topics. We at Icinga have been working on some guidelines for getting started with development on our projects – contributing to the Icinga project has never been easier! That could be working on a plugin, a webmodule, fixing bugs in Icinga Web 2 or Icinga 2, adding features to the director or simply adapting the documentation.

User Experience (UX) professionals know that audiences are demanding ever increasing levels of sophistication from your websites.
However, before you invest big bucks in the latest [social/mobile/local] solution, let's make sure your site passes 11 basic tests for usability.
A majority of sites still make Usability 101 mistakes. Are you leaving customers frustrated or losing business because of errors that can be fixed hours or days?
Join our webinar and take our 2011 Usability Test to find out how you score (then call us to help with the social/mobile/local project).
