The Story of Two Touches | A Sermon on Mark 5:21-43Steve Thomason
ย
Jesus heals two women. One enjoyed the center of community life, the other lived on the margins. See how each had to take a different path to find Jesus' healing touch.
The four Gospels provide accounts of Jesus's life and ministry from different perspectives. Matthew primarily writes for a Jewish audience to show that Jesus fulfilled Hebrew prophecies as the Messiah. The Gospel covers Jesus's birth, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection. Matthew presents Jesus as the prophesied King of the Jews and emphasizes that he established the kingdom of God through his atoning sacrifice.

The Book of Esther describes the biggest threat to the Jewish people that was not equalled until the Holocaust. Without being mentioned directly God creates a series of "coincidents" that defeat the threat.
1) The world faces many problems like war, poverty, and injustice that human efforts alone cannot solve. God has a plan to restore order and humanity's relationship with Him.
2) God created humans in His image to be good and to have fellowship with Him, but sin disrupted this. However, God continued to offer grace and protection to humans.
3) God sent Jesus Christ to overcome sin and evil. By accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, individuals can experience God's love and allow His plan of restoration to begin in their lives.
The document provides an overview of seeking and knowing God's will. It discusses the different types of God's will, including his fulfilled will through Jesus, revealed will found in scripture, and specific will for individual lives. Fulfilling God's revealed will means placing Christ first, loving God, being thankful, making disciples, and living holy lives. Parents have a responsibility to bring up children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Living together as a Christ-centered family allows parents to instruct children according to scripture so they can shine as lights in the world.
John 3:1-5. A New Life In Christ. In the new life we have been born again. In the new life we are a new creation. In the new life we crucify the flesh with its passions and desires. In the new life we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. In the new life we are renewed by the Holy Spirit. In the new life we are dead to sin but alive to God. In the new life we are washed from our sins. in the new life we put to death the old man and put on the new man. In the new life we died and our life is hidden with Christ in God. In the new life we were brought back from death in sin.

God chooses Abraham through whom to send the Messiah. Abraham is a man of faith who God promises to make into a great nation and through whom all nations will be blessed. Key figures like Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Melchizedek prefigure aspects of Christ. The book of Genesis establishes major themes of the Bible - creation, the fall of man, God's plan for salvation, and his choosing of Israel as the people through whom the Messiah will come.
God reveals exciting truths about His nature through the pages of the Old Testament. We can discover many spiritual gems by knowing the story of the Old Testament and how the various books of the Bible fit into that story. John Beene taught an Overview of the Old Testament at the November 20, 2011 congregational worship. The class included timelines, pictures, and maps to help the scriptures come to life. Listen to the lessons, view the Power Point presentation, and use the Old Testament Timelines to further your own study of God's story in the Old Testament.
God tests the faith of those he intends to use. The document discusses how God tested the faith of biblical figures like Noah, Abraham, and Moses through impossible tasks, major changes, delayed promises, unsolvable problems, senseless tragedies, and prolonged pain. Each test was an opportunity for their faith and endurance to grow. The lessons are that faith is believing without seeing, obeying without understanding, and persisting even when it's difficult.
God created the Garden of Eden and all things within it as good. This included the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God commanded Adam and Eve that they could eat from any tree except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. However, Eve was deceived by the serpent to eat its fruit. Both Adam and Eve then ate the fruit, disobeying God. This first sin introduced sin and death into the world. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil represented the choice and freedom that God gave humans to obey or disobey Him.
Some notes from recent teaching sessions - they are aimed at giving more of a background / preparatory idea about how a person might move into a position to be "anointed" by God.
The document summarizes stories from the Bible about kings of Israel. It discusses how King Solomon disobeyed God and his kingdom was divided. It then focuses on the stories of prophets Elijah and a widow during the rule of the evil King Ahab. Elijah predicted a drought and was fed by ravens and a widow, showing God provides for those who obey him, even in hardship. The document praises the one true God who created all and takes care of his people.
What is the Christian's mandate and responsibility in the world? Why are we dilatus in spite of the obvious needs and urgent cries of the world? Why are we Christians blatantly disobedient in spite of our Lord's command? Moses' five objections to obeying God's call provides some clues.
This document discusses Jesus' statement in John 15:1-11 about being the "true vine." It explains that Jesus used the metaphor of a grapevine, which would have been familiar to Jews, to teach four main points: (1) Jesus is the source of life and sustenance for believers, (2) believers are called to abide in Christ to bear fruit, (3) God the Father prunes believers to encourage greater fruitfulness, and (4) fruitfulness is evidence of abiding in Christ. The key is for believers to remain in close fellowship with Christ through obedience, prayer, and Bible reading in order to bear the spiritual fruits of winning souls, holiness, and good works.
The document discusses the Ten Commandments and their importance. It provides the full text of the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20:1-17. It emphasizes that the two greatest commandments are to love God with all your being and love your neighbor as yourself. The Ten Commandments teach people how to love and worship God as well as get along with others. Overall, the document stresses that the Law, including the Ten Commandments, guides people on how to live righteously.
Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the beginning of the Christian church. Over 3,000 people were baptized that day. The church calls us beyond our personal concerns to worship God together. We are stewards of the gifts God has given us, including our time, talents, treasures, and relationships. As stewards, we are called to use our gifts to fulfill God's purposes and support the church through proportional giving according to our abilities. The parish budget for 2012 is around $775,000, and each of the 660 pledging units is asked to pledge an average of $1,174 to meet this goal.
The serpent tempts Eve to eat fruit from the forbidden tree, telling her it will make her like God. Eve eats the fruit and gives some to Adam, and their eyes are opened. God questions Adam and Eve about their disobedience. He curses the serpent to crawl on its belly. God punishes humanity with painful childbirth, hard labor, and eventual physical death. He expels Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
The Book of Joshua describes the Israelites conquering Canaan under Joshua's leadership after Moses' death. Key events include crossing the Jordan River, marching around Jericho which causes its walls to fall, defeating the Amorite kings who attacked Gibeon, and dividing the land among the tribes. The book emphasizes obeying God and avoiding assimilation into Canaanite culture. Joshua prepares the people to continue without him before he dies at age 110.
The document provides an overview of the differences between the Old Testament and New Testament. It notes that the Old Testament was given only to the nation of Israel, was not a perfect covenant, and included requirements like observing the Sabbath and tithing. The New Testament replaced the Old Testament, was given to all nations, and no longer requires following specific laws, but rather being judged by the words of Jesus. The Old Testament served its purpose in leading people to Christ but is now nailed to the cross, while Christians today live under the New Testament.
Solomon reflects on his quest to find meaning and satisfaction apart from God through wisdom, riches, and pleasures. However, he finds that without God's blessing, all is emptiness. The book of Ecclesiastes conveys that life is futile without faith in God, who alone can provide purpose and fulfillment. It cautions against seeking happiness in temporary or worldly things rather than in obedience to God.

This document outlines a presentation about the biblical character Rebekah. It will include: 1) an overview of Rebekah's character and the sorrow and joy in her life, 2) a retelling of her story based on passages from Genesis, 3) an opportunity for personal reflection on aspects of her story, and 4) a summary and lesson learned from her life. The goal is to help attendees embrace godly femininity, characters of biblical women, and teach others.
The document provides an overview and summary of the Book of Joshua in the Old Testament. It discusses how Joshua led the Israelites into the promised land of Canaan to find rest, as God had promised through Moses. However, it notes that the Israelites began to sin by neglecting God's word and making treaties with other nations, beginning their downfall. The document examines themes like clear direction from God, Rahab's deep conviction in choosing God, and their formidable military victories, but also their negligible sins that later grew. It stresses the need to truly find rest in God today, as Joshua did then, and avoid the subtle threats that can invade one's life.
The document discusses the differences between the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Fruits are the result of a process as the Holy Spirit works in a believer's life, while gifts are abilities freely given to believers to serve God. It provides lists of spiritual gifts mentioned in the Bible and describes them. While gifts should be identified and used, the focus should be on bearing the fruit of the Spirit which are Christ-like qualities like love, joy, peace and more.
