Due to changing demographics and market conditions, affordable and senior housing projects are becoming more prevalent in discussions about housing types within a community. These projects often provide unique opportunities for revitalization and strategic partnerships. There are an array of incentives available to promote this type of housing. This presentation will explain why we are seeing changes in this particular housing market and what communities can do to create strategies for successful development projects that can help achieve multiple community development objectives.
It is time to move forward on affordable housing in New York, an update from LiveOn NY. For older adults, the lack of availability and affordable housing is a worsening crisis. Solutions recommended include production, preservation, and regulation. By retooling existing programs and additional investment in select programs, the City can serve at least 100,000 seniors, laying the groundwork to meet the housing needs of NYC’s growing elderly population.
In this webinar we discussed the Good Home Inquiry’s findings and recommendations, the policy priorities of the public and the next steps needed to improve our homes and improve the lives of millions of people.

Understanding the impact of welfare reforms on households in the South EastPolicy in Practice
With the lower Benefit Cap coming in Autumn 2016 and Universal Credit firmly in its implementation phase, knowing what impact welfare reform policies will have on individual households is more critical than ever.
It’s also important to understand the impact of interventions. Targeting support to those households where it will have the greatest impact is crucial as local authorities continue to find ways to deliver more with less.
This Policy in Practice seminar from Wednesday 28 September 2016 showcased pioneering work being done by two London councils, Croydon and Tower Hamlets. Their work combines pre-emptive analysis with proactive programmes that will reach out to households and offer support, before reforms hit them.
In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
