Description: McCarthy & Stone has been building retirement homes for more than 30 years. This presentation was given to the South West’s Housing Learning and Improving Network (the Housing LIN) on 6 November 2012 and covered McCarthy & Stone’s recent work in the region and the growing demand for retirement housing. It was delivered by Shane Paull, Regional Managing Director, Beverley Chase, Director, and Paul Teverson, Head of Public Affairs. Included is a case study, where McCarthy & Stone worked with Mid Sussex District Council and Affinity Sutton to redevelop a council-owned site in Burgess Hill, Sussex.

6. Meeting a local need
It is important that local residents are able to stay close to
their hometown in later life, with the support they need from
their family and friends.
Almost half of our residents move from less than 5 miles away
Most residents free up a substantial family home with two thirds
moving from homes with three or more bedrooms.
5,000 purchases of McCarthy & Stone properties between Distance moved into a McCarthy & Stone development
2007 and 2010 freed up family housing worth £1.1 billion back into local markets.
This has a knock on effect that stimulates the housing chain and ultimately benefits the first time

Worked with Mid Sussex District
Council and Affinity Sutton to
redevelop this council-owned site.

Care accommodation.
• Delivered 22 units of age-
restricted affordable housing and
102 apartments for home owners.
• Fulfilled the vision of the
Town Centre Master Plan.
