This document summarizes research on executive function (EF) skills and their relationship to psychopathology. It discusses EF skills like inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility that involve top-down control of thought and behavior. Difficulties with EF are common across many psychiatric disorders. A neurodevelopmental model suggests that adverse childhood experiences can disrupt the development of brain regions involved in EF, increasing risk for general psychopathology. Interventions targeting EF skills may help reduce psychopathology in a transdiagnostic manner.
