The document discusses upcoming Rotary Club of New Bombay Seaside events in August, including their regular meeting on August 5th, Spirits 2012 youth competition on August 12th, and continuing the youth competition on August 19th. It also discusses previous club events like a picnic and a fundraising event, and encourages members to help expand youth programs and think ambitiously about goals.

Points of reflection for ethics in urbanism Roberto Rocco
This is a list of issues in Urbanism where ethical judgment plays a crucial role. We have elaborated this list with TU Delft students of Urbanism in mind. These are points students have asked us about, or points we’ve noticed students struggling with. This list does not tell you what to do. It invites you to reflect on issues where ethical judgment is necessary.
The TU Delft puts the highest importance on issues of ethics. And in fact, in order to form “good urbanists”, we need to provide them with knowledge and skills, but we also need to discuss ethical values. In fact, we recognize the importance of forming critical minds, which will be able to solve complex problems in the real world: minds that are able to investigate issues concerning the built environment and society, reflect upon them, communicate results clearly and articulate solutions among different stakeholders. These are activities that involve moral judgments and accountability towards the public.

FOREWORD by Karina Andersen, Founder
I am humbled by a year of incredible growth.
We have opened so many new and exciting doors and partnered with like-minded souls who deeply connect to our passion and our purpose. These partnerships have allowed us to extend ourselves even further and gift especially South African youth-at-risk with our enabling platform, a TRI toolkit and our SmilingOne Change Agents!
2018/19 has allowed for years of deeply focused Change Agent work to move to the next level! I love how the journey guides us. It keeps revealing the steps to take. At times we are called to pause and at other times we are called to stretch. It has been a year of huge stretch. It continues to ask for more and that we bow to the process. Only when we bow can we open our hearts and minds to purify our intent. We are here to SERVE a much greater purpose than ourselves. We want to cause ripples of change which will echo in the hearts and minds of those we touch. We want to leave a lasting footprint and be woven into the tapestry of lives transformed forever. Just like nature every single process is connected. WE are all connected! There is a greater rhythm to honour - a grand symphony. My task is to keep us honest and aligned to this wonderful balance which begins with how we as a SmilingOne Team live and practice our own consciousness toolkit, grounding ourselves firmly, moving from our deepest essence.
I am thrilled to share our annual report with you and invite you to celebrate with us the wonderful progress…
In Gratitude, Karina - SmilingOne Founder

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS

Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

2. Since 1988, Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication
Initiative (GPEI) — the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention — have worked to wipe polio from the face of the
earth. A volunteer service organization of 1.2 million men and women, Rotary began
immunizing children against polio in 1985 and became a spearheading partner in the
GPEI three years later. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is deeply saddened by
the killing of Mr. Muhammad Ishaq in the Gadap Town area of Karachi, Pakistan, on 20
July2012. Mr. Ishaq had worked on Pakistan’s polio eradication effort as a Union
Council Polio Worker supported by WHO. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative and
all partners express their deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Ishaq. Because of
the dedication of heroes like Mr. Ishaq, Pakistan is this year closer than ever to the
eradication of polio. He was known for his dedication and diligence to immunize all
children against polio. An investigation by local authorities in Karachi is ongoing.
Currently the disease remains endemic in only three countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan
and Nigeria.

3. Dear fellow Rotarians,
What is Rotary? When I ask Rotarians this question, they often give vague answers. And
when I asked myself this question, I had to think about it. August is Membership and
Extension Month in Rotary, and I want all Rotarians to be able to send a unified
message about what Rotary is and why they joined.
The key to increasing membership is for every Rotarian to be convinced that it's good to
be a Rotarian, and to convey that passion to others. In Rotary, we have a tendency to be
humble and keep our achievements to ourselves. But we must share them with those
around us and with the world.
Every Rotarian has a specific moment that stands out and has a special meaning. Some
people refer to this as their "Rotary Moment." I believe it is very important to share this
moment with others. Facts and numbers can only go so far, but sharing a personal
experience can open doors and build friendships.
That's why I decided to create some sample messages that I call "Rotary Moments." You
can use these one-minute and three-minute messages to answer the question "What is
Rotary?" in a way that is most personal to you. They will help you talk about the
projects you've been involved in, how they've helped your community, and what's been
most meaningful to you.
To strengthen Rotary, we need more members. But unless those members are
convinced of the benefits of the organization and can share that passion with others,
expanding Rotary won't be meaningful.
If every Rotarian is happy about being a Rotarian and spreads the word with a clear,
unified message – if every Rotarian around the world can be his or her own PR
department – the combined, collective effect will be enormous. These sample
messages will help us all clearly communicate our enthusiasm to others. This will lead
to an increase in new membership and in member retention.
The messages are available for free download at www.rotary.org, and Rotarians can buy
other membership materials at shop.rotary.org.
I believe that the purpose of every life is to help others and contribute to society. Once
Rotarians begin using these samples, the world will become more aware of how Rotary
is helping people live that way. I encourage you to share your Rotary Moment with
other Rotarians as well as non-Rotarians.

4. Hello Champions, First of all, let us congratulate IPDG Vijay and Kiran for giving our
District a superlative year 2011-12! They have broken all previous records and set a
new benchmark for our District. Being labeled as a topmost District in the world was a
feather in our cap and they deserve every accolade for their outstanding effort!
Friends, the new Rotary Year is here! If I appear to be excited, it is because I Am
Excited!
President Sakuji Tanaka has given a profound theme, “Peace through Service”. He
emphasizes that one can create peace by doing small acts of service consistently,
persistently while touching more lives than ever before - minute by minute, hour by
hour, day by day and bit by bit, thus spreading happiness by our small acts of service.
Satisfaction then will be everywhere and peace will be the order of the day! This is
the basis from which stronger relationships, families, and communities can be built.
You will see that this is also the basis for our District Thrust areas and Governor's
Citation where we have given a firm direction to our District towards 2020!
The Team of District 3140 is ready and willing to help Rotarians and Clubs reach
heights never reached before. We have left no stone unturned. Since early-2011,
we've been visiting Clubs, all over the District. On 10th April 2011 we kicked off our
Training Programs.
They included many first-of-its-kind programs specially designed for our leaders - and
with an eminently successful outcome!
It was exciting to give shape to one's thoughts and understanding of our District's
requirements - built over many years of work done with almost every club in our
District. The “Run up” to the Champion's Year was indeed exciting and fulfilling!
Whenever you plan new things, your mind is full of newer goals, newer directions,
newer resources, newer paths which you need to discover and harness, and your
bosom is filled with an almost insatiable desire and enthusiasm to act! This is an
exciting time when challenges and responsibilities beckon you to give your best and
the fragrance of the impending era pervades your nostrils and leads you on to your
chosen path! That is why I AM so Excited.
District 3140 is also fortunate to have an outstanding band of Presidents leading their
respective Clubs during the Champion's Year! They are passionate, resourceful, and
very well prepared with their plans and projects to become Champions! They are
indeed a great asset for our District!
The New Year then beckons you. Let us welcome the New Year with open arms
striving all the time to achieve our chosen goals and bringing “Peace through Service”

5. Well friends , its time to relax and look back at our achievements over the last month.
It gives me immense pleasure in recollecting the wonderful picnic at Panoramic Resort ,
Karnala. I enjoyed the day being satisfied from the cheerful response of all our
members.
The sense of responsibility had reached its peak as the Fundraising day of Sur-Milan
approached. Here I wish to pause and want to congratulate my every member for the
efforts he /she has taken to make the program a very grand success. I like to thank the
committee members who have conceived the idea of selection of program for Sur-
Milan VII as well as the venue ,Vishnudas Bhave Hall. For the first time we have dared
and succeeded , the hall being full with an audience of music lovers of more than 700.I
personally thank all my members who have talked to various sponsors and made it to
receiving all the donations for our projects throughout the year. I also have a word of
appreciation for all the sponsors who have not only put their faith in our club but also
have put a step forward and have generously helped us financially. I wish them good
success in all their endeavors.
The installations of our interactors , Rotractors and Innerwheel was great. It motivates
one and all.
Spirits is Back. We have dared to put a step further this year and increased our events
to a total of 41.I wish all of us will do our best to make this Youth competition to be
memorable over the future years. I am confident that by joining hands we can bring to
light the wonderful talents hidden in our youth. Lets be on our mark , get set and go.
THINK BIG:
Everyone has an official wish list of things they think are "reasonable." What about
the unofficial wish list? The one that common sense tells you to ignore? The list that
exists deep in your mind, the list that keeps you up at night, the list that makes your
toes wiggle when you think of it? Why not choose that list for a change?
How long have you dreamed of being, having, and doing what you really want? Think
big, as when it comes to your goals, the size of your ambition does matter.

10. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time
comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full
measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour,
when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A
moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step
out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul
of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a
period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."
- Jawaharlal Nehru
(Speech on Indian Independence Day, 1947

11. Humor Can Save Your Life
The story goes that a certain court jester went too far one day and
insulted his king. The king became so infuriated he sentenced the
jester to be executed. His court prayed upon the king to have mercy
for this man who had served him well for so many years. After a
time, the king relented only enough to give the jester his choice as
to how he would like to die.
True to form, the jester replied, “If it’s all the same to you, my Lord,
I’d like to die of old age.”
Certainly in this case, a good sense of humor saved the man’s life.
It’s true for us as well. We may not be faced with a situation where
our wit will save us from an execution, but our sense of humor and
the ability to laugh at things has proven health benefits that extend
and improve our quality of life. Norman Cousins, in his book
Anatomy of an Illness, wrote about how he cured himself of cancer
by laughing a good part of each day. He rented films of comedies
and watched them for hours on end in his hospital room. He had
nothing to lose since he’d been diagnosed as terminal. His
“experiment” turned out to be a classic example of the healing
powers of laughter. If it worked for Cousins with a life-threatening
illness, it can work for us to enhance and protect our good health.
We should laugh often and heartily. It’s good for our digestion and
our disposition. Besides, life’s too important to take seriously.
