Phospholipids have an attraction between their phosphate heads and water molecules, and between the hydrocarbon tails of neighboring phospholipid molecules, making them amphiphilic. This allows phospholipids to form cell membranes, which serve important functions like separating the inside and outside of cells and compartmentalizing different internal activities.
