Everybody is genius - jay and his music
1. Everybody is Genius - Jay and His Music
Every genius is a wing-broken angel. They are not flawless but weird this or that way.
Jay is prone to be nervous. He might barely complete a sentence when he gets nervous. In
“Nunchuks”,双截棍 he created his own singing style – Jay’s style. It is a neo-Chinese rap,
pronounced in broken words. Nobody understands what is spoken in “Nunchuks”, but all are
fascinated by its fast beats and novelty. The mainstream was appalled and denounced Jay’s rap a
humiliation of Chinese language. But teenagers voted for him with their pocket money. This
originality fast swept up the smog under BIG FOUR in fading Hongkong pop culture. More
importantly, “Nunchuks” is Jay’s attribution to his life hero – Bruce Lee. Jay is determined to
follow Bruce’s step to be the NEXT hero. This time Chinese do not choose to punch with Kungfu,
but determine t to capture the heart with melody.
Jay was raised up in a single Chinese family. In school, Jay must be the boy who sits on the back
row since he is easily distracted by the outside world. While he reluctantly glues his butt on the
chair, his mind is wandering in nature. He exclaims that first love tastes like freshly picked
strawberry in summer. The butterfly on the shutter is as beautiful as sonnet. Sparrows are
gossiping on the wire. His girl is as curious as a kitten about sanma’s taste. Well, well, he is
over-obsessed with her tomato- reddish cheeks and can’t stop thinking of stealing a kiss from her
stubborn lips. Is that a poem? Yes, Jasmine Orange “七里香” is a poem. He is the poet, who saves
the last line “I will love you for eternality.” in the end.
In Star Shining 星晴, he is that magic boy after name of Timothy Green. His take us to cruise
around in the azure sky. Accidently, a piece of cloud falls down. He picks it up and follows it
aimlessly. On journey, he bit sadness marshmallow one month after one mouth. At night, he
looks upon stars twinkling in line. Secretly, he makes wishes. Someday, all of them will become
2. true.
Every time, when I listen to those songs, I feel a deep connection to those good days. The
summer, the trees, the stars, the clouds…the places once were familiar with in our ordinary lives.
I believe that Jay is an environmentalist as he is very sensitive to tiny signs of nature changing.
This sensitivity is a rare quality which is undervalued in modern China. Chinese become numb to
the deteriorating environment. However, upside down 5000 years, Chinese had never been
stopping pursuing a harmonious connection with the nature and universe. This simple philosophy
nestles the ancient Chinese wisdom, giving birth to Yin and Yang. It has generated tons of
inspirations for Chinese ancient poems and lyrics.
LOVE is an unavoidable topic in Jay’s music. Most time, Jay is an introvert boy, with a world of his
own. But when he crushes on someone, he can transform to a brave and super-initiative boy.
Even the neighbor can sense his feelings.
He says, love is a simple thing. In Simple Love 简单爱, he takes his girl to walk along the riverside,
hand in hand. He takes her to watch the baseball match and bicycle her to visit the grandma. His
love constitutes of simple little moments. It is watching the sunset together till both two fall
asleep. It is relying on his shoulder and napping on his chest. It is an untold overwhelming
touchiness…
Nowadays in China, true love becomes as rare as fresh unpolluted air in foggy Beijing. Chinese
metropolitan citizens, rely on PM2.5 index provided by US embassy’s to decide whether to wear
the mask out. When the necessity becomes rarity, Chinese are lost in pursuit of true love. A
famous diamond ring commercial non-stop brainwashes young Chinese girls that true love is a
handsome Frenchman making vow to you, with that sparking stone, under Elfie tower. Here Jay
told us a different story. If someone is doing simple silly things to make you happy, he is saying “I
love you.”
Thank God, China finally marches into a multi-valued modern society.
In Jay’s Neverland, I sense Chinese pride, sensitivity to nature’s changing, Chinese traditional
values embedded in those fetishes, a boy’s true love and his superhero dreams… I think I have to
stop right here now. I don’t think my tiny piece can accomplish a wide dreaming. All I wish is it
opens a small window to enchant you to his secret music garden.
You know I am not lying. I am seriously sincere.
