(January 04-08, 2016)
Citizenship Education and Community
Engagement is inherently a global endeavor.

society, Faculty of Management and

currently associated as Program Coordinator
and Facilitator – Active Citizens with the
University of Karachi. She briefed the
participants about the core components of
the program namely capacity building, youth
led social action projects, policy dialogues
and developing networks at national and
international fronts. The climax of the event
was the magnificent video shown to the
participants to cherish tremendous
achievements of the Active Mentor – Prof.
Dr. Khalid M. Iraqi who has developed a
‘League of Facilitators’ for enabling ‘Active

5-day journey of Active Citizens to promote
social leadership and community-led social
development in youth. The workshop was
focused on a number of training methods,

refining their ideas for enabling them to plan
youth led social action projects. Especially,

Mallick, Syeda Hoor-Ul-Ain, Dr. Amjad
Ali, Dr. Imtiaz, Ms. Mariya Khan, Dr.

their social actions.
Initially participants demonstrated usual
state of mind; they started with the slow
pace but later they innovated on the learning
modes with high absorption and deep
interest. Many of them learn to shed the
shackles of the traditional ways of looking at
things. They got involved in the workshop
proceedings very enthusiastically and
participated in all interactive activities.
Many of them narrated their personal
experiences avoiding self-censorship to
reinforce learning.
Most of them displayed good cohesion
during the sessions while participating in the
exercises and rated as winners. At the
beginning, they were found vibrating around
the emotional composition but later they
have learnt to stay composed in enervating
situations for the ultimate resolve of
problems and achievement of objectives to
endorse and implement decisions that
resulted in increased effectiveness by means
of complementary skills and coordination.
During the proceedings of the workshop,
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sajidin, Director,
Quality Enhancement Cell and Prof. Dr.
Shakeel Farooqi, President, Karachi
University Teachers Society (KUTS)
highlighted the importance of collectivism,
sense of responsibility, sensitized citizenship
and coordination for making our inhabits a

the Vice Chancellor for his continued
support for the academic and co-academic

On day 5, portal training for students and
facilitators was held in the newly revamped
computer lab of the Department of Public
Administration.
This workshop helped in bringing together
students with different beliefs, perspectives
and disciplines to learn from and share with
each other. The modular learning journey
equips students with ‘Active Citizens Skill
Set’ for carrying out social action projects to
affect social change in their communities.
The highly interactive and informative
workshop concluded with a simple
ceremony in which the focal person of the
program, Prof. Dr. Khalid M. Iraqi took
feedback from the students.
The program has transformed students into
‘Hyper Active Citizens’ who will play a
meaningful role for the sustainable
development of their communities through
deliberations, discussions, decision-making
and implementation of social action projects
in their realm of wisdom and jurisdiction.
