The document summarizes the key design elements of magazine covers that were incorporated into the student's media product cover for their college magazine. These include call-outs advertising inside articles, placement of article titles and images, inclusion of a masthead and college logo, and use of multiple colors. The target audience is identified as students, teachers and parents aged 16-60 at the college. The cover aims to attract this audience with relatable student photography and articles on topics likely to engage them.
1. Evaluation
My media product differs from a typical magazine cover; however I have clear inspirations from them. For example my magazine does not contain a price indication or a barcode, simply because I never intended my magazine to be sold outside of the Henley College, or in fact sold at all. I wanted to make it look as though the magazine had been produced by the students and would be complementary of the college.
However I do include certain magazine traits such as inside articles advertised on the cover, inter-textual links, and call-outs, i.e. ‘What do you think?’
I titled certain articles to make them seem as though they were to do with issues within the college, thus identifying my niche market. Compared to real media products I have included a masthead, and placed the article titles around the main picture which I have also decided to use as it represents a typical student however she appears to be using a mobile phone whilst doing her work, something students can relate to.
An aspect which perhaps differs from typical magazine covers is that I have placed another image on the cover page. I have also made the page with more than one colour involved in the page background. Something that is not common with typical magazines but more student-based productions.
As for the masthead, I have decided to use one however it is not placed at the top in the middle of the page and I have included the college’s logo at the top of the page.
The audience for my magazine would typically be students, teachers and parents of the Henley College and so, any age from 16-60 (rough estimation) can appreciate my product.
I have attempted to attract my audience by using (student) photography thus allowing certain students to accomplish certain work deadlines by working within the college. I have also tried to use catchy call-outs and articles which I believe my audience might be interested in. On the subject of mobile phones, it is an issue amongst any college, with the tendency for students to rebel against certain rules and an educators struggle to keep their students from using them in class. Or perhaps the college is fond of them and believe they can be useful within the college.
For this preliminary task I have only used Microsoft word to create my cover and contents page; however I intend to use Photoshop for my final piece as I will be creating a typical magazine cover.
-4095757600950The price seems to be the same or similar of each and every magazine issue. With a bodily advertised with the price looking like a sticker, and is significantly cheaper than high end magazines such as Vogue or Elle. Includes banners over the magazine. By- lines are used to attract the audience and to advertise the content. The fact that the magazine size is smaller compared to higher brands indicates that the price will be less. The models are within the target audience, and therefore establishing who the demographics are. The use of unusual font makes it look like it’s written in lipstick which connects with female audience. There are inter-textual links that are added underneath the magazines name as well as date of issue. The women’s dress often connects with the fonts and the colour themes of the magazine. The words like ‘sexy’ and ‘love’ are boldly advertised to further interest the audience, and to indicate what the magazines context and content is. There is a hierarchy over what the magazine’s editors that decide what’s more important. Due to the success of the magazine name, the models are places over the name of the magazine the ‘mast head’. For each phrase there are certain words that are either bolder than others or in a bigger font size. The use of pun ‘more fun for your money’ and the used of synthetic personalisation ‘you’ creates a relationship and addresses the reader or audience. This clearly shows that it is the money they are talking about. Each model has been dressed in an outfit which comes to above the knee, perhaps symbolising that the models are able to move about in their clothing, and the items look somewhat affordable to the target audience. This appeals to the audience because they can then aspire to be more like those posing on the front cover of the magazine. The colours most used are pinks, blacks, yellows. Such colours can connote the use of feminism (pink) whilst the yellow and black remain eye-catching and clearly stand out. Several different fonts have been used to attract the audience’s attention by making the cover more interesting.
