IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF SIMILAR MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
We have used silence in our film, which a lot of films use this as thriller
convention, such as Hitchcock in his film rear window. We have used silence due
to the film as he is described as the master of suspense.
We also used low-key lighting in the bedroom. The bedroom has a red tint,
which the connotation of this is binary blood, and death which is suggestive.
Low key lighting is used a lot in Shutter island.
We used eerie music over opening sequence to make the audience feel
uncomfortable throughout, making them on edge as if something is going to
happen. We got the idea from the famous film Jaws, in which the theme tune is
eerie and makes you feel anxious.
CHALLENGING CONVENTIONS
We have challenged conventions such as using a onesie rather than
nightgown which suggests that she holding onto youth and her
childish behaviour. This causes vulnerability and makes her look like
she should be the victim, an example of using this is in Demons never
die which the girl is objectified due to only wearing a top and her
underwear.
In our opening sequence our protagonist is female, unlike
famous/well known thriller films, such as Taken where the man is the
protagonist and goes out to save his daughter.
Propp’s idea of character fairytale roles by having the male as the
damsel in distress and having the female as the saviour, unlike Taken
which has the daughter as the distressed damsel and the dad as the
saviour.
