Our main production is an urban drama called Addiction. The main storyline is a
teenager called Greg gets pressured into using drugs which results in him becoming
addicted to cocaine. He then encounters many troubles and problems which are
directly related to his drug addiction. We achieved our goals which were to produce an
entertaining urban drama with a good storyline which the viewers would find relatable
and accessible. We also wanted the audience to feel emotion and be able to sympathise
with certain characters in the film, this I think we also achieved. We also wanted to
portray a certain message in our film. We wanted the audience to understand that
drugs aren’t a good thing, and have negative consequences. This is an example of us
abiding by the reception theory. I think we also achieved this aim by showing what a
rough time Greg has due to his addiction to cocaine. This particular point is reflected in
our poster, as Greg is shown with a black eye and a concerned look on his face. It also
links to our radio trailer because that entails Greg receiving therapy for his addiction.
Our first ancillary text was our film poster. The film poster we decided to use
was designed to reflect our film and advertise it to the audience in the best
possible way. We ensured we included all the usual things you get on typical
film posters, such as a rating from a film magazine, the certificate, the name of
the film, and image from the film, release date and acknowledgements. The
title of our film was in a fancy and eye catching font, to draw attention to the
title of the film. The black background helps emphasise the writing and image
on the film poster, making them stand out even more. It also gives a sense of
darkness and suspicion, which we particularly wanted to portray to the
audience. The image on the poster is the main focus point though. It shows
the main character, Greg, looking concerned with a black eye. This reflects the
whole main product, as the storyline is all about the troubles Greg encounters
due to his addiction to drugs. This really helps sell our product, as the
audience have been given a big insight as to the main points of our film. It
may also entice the audience into wanting to watch the film to see specifically
the problems Greg encounters and how he deals with them.
The film poster I decided to compare ours to is the film poster for Jurassic
Park. Without even looking closely at the film poster, the similarities are
apparent. The first thing they have in common is the black background.
This gives the impression of danger and the unknown. Another thing the
two film posters have in common is the large image at the centre of the
poster. Much like ours included Greg looking concerned as that is the
main plot of our film, the Jurassic Park film poster image has a skeletised t-
rex as the main image on a red background. This shows the main theme of
the film, which is dinosaurs, and in particular the t-rex killing humans.
The title of the film is also displayed in fancy white writing to draw the
audiences attention, much the same as ours does. However, the Jurassic
Park film poster does not include the certificate or feedback on the front.
This is probably because it was a massive blockbuster, so everyone already
knew the certificate, and assumed it would get 5 stars everywhere.
Our second ancillary text was our radio trailer. We had a lot of ideas for our
radio trailer. We decided to go for an idea which involved Greg speaking to a
therapist about his drug addiction. The therapist asks about his addiction and
whether he is receiving any help for it. These are big clues as to what the film
is going to be about and gives a little personality taste of the main character.
This will be of interest to the audience as they will make a first impression of
the main character on what they hear in our radio trailer. This is a good way
in which we sold our radio trailer and made it interesting to the target
audience. The tone of our radio trailer is quite low key, but at the same time
anxiety is apparent in Greg’s voice. This reflects our film as Greg is
apprehensive at the start of the film, and appears anxious and nervous in
nearly every scene he appears in.
