AS Level Media Studies - CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION (Film Opening Task)
Evaluation question 2
1. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
2. Gender
In our introduction to a thriller, the main protagonist is
teenage male. In this sequence we challenge some
of the stereotypical views that society has on
teenage males. At first when entering the abandoned
building we see our protagonist pick up a weapon,
this tricks the audience into believing that he is the
aggressor and is the one who will be committing the
murder.
However, We actually make it so the male
protagonist is the one who actually gets murdered.
This challenges many of the stereotypes in the
industry as in most thriller/murder films, it’s the
helpless woman who is the one being attacked but in
this case, the one attacked is a male in their teens.
3. Location
We use multiple locations in our thriller introduction, these help build up different
understanding for the character and represent different particular social groups.
The first location is the protagonists house, we don’t see to much of the actual entire
home but we really just see his bedroom (where he likely spends most of his time) this
shows a computer game being played next to a social media site on the other screen
depicting a conversation between our main charter and some of his friends.
We then have the street outside of his home, we are only here from a couple of seconds
and don’t really see many of the neighbouring homes.
The Final and main location we have is the abandoned building where the murder takes
place. This location was great as it had a lot of creepy and scary elements in it. The
alleyway in which the main character walks down, shows a gloomy back alley where
anything could happen, locations such as these are normally associated with gangs and
crimes. This gives the audience a pre thought idea of what might happen to our
protagonist. The interior of the building is almost completely empty apart from the rubbish
and bits of glass on the ground, this again gives off a creepy vibe as the place is clearly
not inhabited, this makes the audience question why he is here in the first place and why
he would want to be there.
All these locations help us build a sense of realism and tension, but more importantly it
helps us represent particular social groups. For example, The bedroom with the nice
computer alongside with the nice looking neighbourhood makes the audience believe that
our main character comes from a well of background, this juxtaposes with our final
location as it is the complete opposite of the nice home/neighbourhood and such a place
is not commonly associated with places like that.
4. Attacker
Not much is revealed of the attacker in our
introduction to the thriller. All we see of him
is his shadow as he commits the attack.
However, we hint multiple times in the
introduction to who he might be, the title of
the film is “Kane and Able” as is the title of
the book that our protagonist finds just
before the attack. This hints that the
attacker is most likely his brother, as the
story of Kane and Able is a biblical tale
about Kane killing his brother.
