The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

1. Evaluation Task 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. The genre
The genre of my opening sequence was a thriller. My film is about a
powerful criminal who is notorious for constantly double crossing her
partners and bagging all the money stolen for herself. Then she
eventually meets a partner in crime who she does not back stab and
they become the top criminals. A thriller is a broad genre of film which
is define by the moods they elicit giving viewers heightened feelings of
suspense, anxiety, anticipation and excitement. My thriller is a crime
thriller that has a focus point of breaking the law and the life of
criminals.
3. This is a Superhero film
released on July 14 2008
directed by Christopher Nolan.
The stars of the film were
Christian Bale, Heath Ledger
and Gary Oldman. The film is
about Batman and the police
forming an alliance to
dismantle organized crime in
Gotham City but are menaced
by criminal mastermind known
as The Joker who seeks to
undermine Batman's influence
and create chaos.
My opening sequence has similar shots to the opening
sequence of The Dark Knight. My opening sequences involves
a criminal who double crosses their partner murders them to
take all the money for themselves. In The Dark Knight there
are numerous criminals who all double cross one another
and murder each other until there is one left, the joker, who
escapes with the money. This is similar to my thriller as the
strongest character escapes, in my thriller the female
criminal, and in The Dark Knight, the joker. The body of The
Dark Knight is very different to my film but they both involve
suspense and tension. The costume is similar in The Dark
Knight to The Latenter as the characters are both wearing
masks as a way of concealing their identity and also the attire
of all black. The font is similar in the two films, however in
The Latenter the font is larger but of similar style. The shot
duration is quicker in The Latenter but both the films are
quick paced. There are also similar framings in the shots
however the location for The Dark Knight is larger therefore a
wider variation of shots. The angles are also similar, using a
low angle to make the weaker characters looks smaller and
using high angles to make the more dominant characters look
more powerful
THE DARK KNIGHT
4. The Latenter The Dark Knight
The same mid shot

Similar simple
font.
5. HEAT
Heat is an american crime
thriller produced and
directed by Michael Mann
and starring Robert De Niro,
Al Pacino and Val Kilmer.
The film was released on
December 15, 1995. The
central conflict is based on
the experiences of former
Chicago police offer and his
pursuit in the 1960s of a
group of professional bank
robbers.
My opening sequence is similar to Heat as it is about
bank robbers just like mine with the body of the movie
about the police trying to nail the criminals. The shots
are very similar to The Latenta which links the two
films. However Heat does not involve a double cross
heist and a female main character. In both films the
characters are wearing balaclavas to conceal their
identity but the characters in Heat wear suits which
suggests larger robberies. Both the films have violence,
the opening sequence involves a shooting and Heat
also has shooting in it. The font is also similar in both
the films, very basic and in capitals to show the genre
is serious. The shots are fast in both Heat and The
Latenta conveying the tension in the films. Shot
duration is long and short depending on how tense the
moment in the scenes are. The framing is pretty similar
as you can see from the slide prior to this. The camera
angles are also similar to try and present the same
dominance of certain characters and weakness of
others.
6. The Latenter Heat
The same mid

criminals

The same

the criminals

Similar font
in both
sequences.
7. BUFFY THE
VAMPIRE SLAYER
Buffy The Vampire slayer is
an American television series
created by Joss Whendon
and is an action/horror film.
It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar,
Nicholas Brendon and Alyson
Hannigan. In the series
Slayers are chosen to battle
against vampires and demons
and other dark forces. The
series was released on March
10 1997.
This series is similar to my thriller as the powerful main
character is also female. Buffy is the slayer, one in a
long line of young women chosen by fate to battle evil
forces. This calling endows her with increased physical
strength, endurance, agility, accelerated healing and
intuition. This is showing a woman who is the bad ass
character which is a countertype as the dominating
character is usually a man. Gender roles switch in this
series where Buffy slays the monster when we expect
her to be the victim. This is similar to my thriller as the
main dominating character is the woman who we
expect to be the victim and then she kills the man. The
shots are quite different as it was filmed almost twenty
years ago and is obviously a slightly different theme to
my thriller. The font is very different as Buffy the
Vampire Slayer is a series and they are filmed in a
different way to films and the content of the films are
different yet they are both on hunting down those who
go against society. We used more hand held shots in
The Latenta. The pace is quite similar as they are both
sequences with tension and suspense. The framing is
similar also as both the films involves a variation of
shots to convey the content.
8. The same

female
character

Two
different

women as
dominant

Different
fonts as
mine is a

9. PAY DAY 2
Pay Day 2 is a video game
developed by Overkill Software
and published by 505 Games. It
was released on 13 August 2013.
It is about gang members robbing
the banks, jewelry stores and
armored cars. This is similar a
similar idea to my thriller as it is
about criminals who wear masks
to conceal their identity and who
rob banks. It is based on the
same people, criminals who
break the law due to greed and
corruption. It is different however
as it has less of a narrative as it is
obviously a video game.
