AS MEDIA COURSEWORK
WhatdidIfindout?Whattypesofcodesandconventionswerecommon
inthegenreofradionews?
I foundoutthatthemost commoncodes andconventions arethatthe presenteris alwaysloud andclear,he orshecanbeheard
witha sharptone.
Most radioshowsusea soundbedofmusic tounderlaythe voiceof thepresenter,normally.I foundthatthespeakerswere
alwaysspeakingdirectly intothemicrophone,andtherewasnosilence while I waslistening throughthe radioshow. I found out
thatthe presenterstyleswasabouttalkingformally,andtheyhada serioustone totheirvoice.
All of thebroadcastshadatleastonejingle playing in theirshow,in which it wasformedwithdifferenttypesof sounds.The
jingles informsthe audiencewho arelistening, sotheyknowwhatradiostationtheyarelistening to.Theywouldnormallyhavea
separatejingle forthe news,andanothertointroducethestation.
The radioshowsalso includedelements ofinterviews, whetherit wouldbeapre-recorded,live orcall in’s.This showsthatthe
radioshadmorethanonevoice tolisten to,andmoretypesofopinionsbeing spread.
Whatradionewsbulletinsdidyoulistento?Whyweretheyuseful?
I listenedto someradionewsbulletins,which wehadto analyseforourcoursework.WelookedatonefromBBCRadio2, BBC
HumbersideandalsoLincsFM. I listened tothem andthoughtaboutwhatcodesandconventionsthatwerein them,andpicked
aparteachradiobroadcast.I listened to popularandcommon radiostationsthatmost people haveheardof becausetheyarethe
mostsuccessful, andthepresentersareofa professionallevel.
I foundthesebulletinsuseful becauseI thinkthattheygaveus someadviceon howtoadapttoourownradiostationandshow.
It gaveusabetterideaofhow toactandspeakon ourownshow.Welearnedthatweneeded tostayfocusedandtoget thejob
doneproperly,andwhenwemessed upwedecided tokeeptryinguntil we got itright.
Explainandcomparehowyoudevelopedyourbroadcasttomatchthatofrealexamples(recordingtechniques,
jingles,presenterstyle/modeofaddress,editing,sound,questioningetc.)
I have developed mybroadcast inorder to makeit of a better quality than compared to professional radio stations.
Werecorded in a studio which would havebeen similar to the one that has been used for real radio shows. Wehad useof specialist equipment
which was of high quality, and recorded in a silent room.
I made thejingle withseveral elements such asfreesoundeffects,copyrightfreemusic andcombined the twotogether, tomakea
unique soundingjingle.I usedserious tonesforthe newsjingle, andbeeping noises.This showsthatI have basedmyideasonthe
jingles I haveheardfromreal examples.
I wantedtousesoundsthatmaybeheardaroundthe dockareain Grimsby,such asseagulls, boathornsandsea sounds.We
wantedto combinethesein with myjingle becauseit wouldsuitthe styleof thestation.Weusedtheseelements in bothofthe
jingles, andI thinkit tied ittogetherwell.
Explainandcomparehowyoudevelopedyourbroadcasttomatchthatofrealexamples
(recordingtechniques,jingles,presenterstyle/modeofaddress,editing,sound,questioningetc.)
Wemadeourvoices soundclear andseriouswhilst talkingstraightintothe microphone,andwedidn’tshowouropinionswhen
talkingaboutthe story.Wetriedtokeep ourlanguage formalandbaseituponwhatwehaveheardin recent radioshows.We
madeour languagerecognisable andeasytobeheard.
Weedited ourradioshow together,andlinkedall ofthe differentseparateinterviews andclips,sothatit all ransmoothly
together,like in theprofessionalradioshows.Wemadesurethattherewasnosilence orgapsin thebroadcast,in which so the
audiencewouldn’tbeboredandget tiredoflistening.

I have tried somethingdifferentwiththe genre of radiostation.Wehadanidea ofthe docks,andusedthisin connectionto a
place,suchas theGrimsby Docks.
Wemadethis clear bycalling thestationTheDocksFM, andmakingthe jingles sounddocksrelated.Weuseddifferenttypesof
soundsin ordertoportraythiskindof scene.Wewantedtopainta pictureofwhatGrimsbymight soundlike.
It is alocal radioandlocal peoplewill betuningintothis radio,so theywouldbefamiliarwiththe typeofstyleandatmosphere
thatwearetryingtoget across.Wetiredtocombine seagull noisesandboatengine noisesin ordertoget the audienceto
understandwhatthemeweweregoing for.
