This document discusses how the media product develops conventions of romantic comedy genres. It uses typical shots and narrative structures but introduces an interracial relationship and discusses sexuality. Two-shots are used to develop relationships between unlikely characters and create tension. The dialogue also carefully develops conventions to avoid offending regarding homosexuality. Conventions are developed rather than changing them completely to make the genre clear while still surprising audiences and avoiding predictability.
2. 1) In What Ways Does Your Media
Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms
And Conventions Of Real Media Products.
Myproduct sets out to develop some of the
Rom/Com conventions.
It is only developed because it does not go out of its
way to be completely different from typical Romantic
comedy story lines and follows the classic
Hollywood narrative.
However it is developed because we introduce an
interracial relationship and also look at sexuality but
it is not considered the main theme of the sequence.
3. How I Used Convention
When shooting all the regular shots were used such as;
Establishing, Mid shot, two shot, Close Ups, Long
shot, panning and Tracking. These are all common shorts
that are regularly used.
The narrative is also a reflection of how we followed
conventional story lines. The idea that the two who are in
love are separated for the best party of the film. We play
off of stereo types and use them to our advantage.
In addition to this Mise-en-scene also highlights the use
of convention as we have young people as our actors
and the costumes they are in also construct a young
attitude in our piece.
4. Development Of
Convention
The use of our camera shots are a development as
conventional Romantic Comedies use two shots but not how
we did. We used two shots to create relationships between
unlikely characters. We also use it as often as possible to not
just reflect the relationships but to also create tension and
conflict.
Our dialogue is also an element we developed and twisted
slightly. Our narrative includes homosexuality and we therefore
had to be carful not to offend or discriminate as that is not our
intention.
Although we play off stereo types we pair two together that
would not normally be anticipated such as the interracial
relationship we present to our audience.
5. Reasoning For Developing
Convention
As a group we decided that we wanted to ensure that our genre
was clear and we knew what we wanted our film to be. However
we did not want the product to be boring and predictable so that
our audiences get bored.
We therefore decided that rather going against all romantic
comedy forms and confusing our audiences we would just change
them around and develop what has already been set up.
By doing this we increase our audience and as a result sales.
Audiences like to be comfortable and know what is about to
happen, they do not appreciate being made uncomfortable
however they do like films to be slightly different rather than
completely unpredictable or too predictable. There is evidence of
this in our questionnaire.
