Evaluation“In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the codes and conventions of real media products?”For our A2 level media studies final project we decided to create a music video. We chose to do the song booty call by the midnight beast. We made the video funny to fit the genre of humour as the lyrics are funny. We decided to make a narrative side to the video with a opening scene of myself and Sam walking to a house for a sleepover, which sets the scene up for the opening lyrics of “I'm with my friends having a sleepover at mine”. We chose to have a opening at the start for before the music kicks in as it shows a story side to the music video.
Evaluation“In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the codes and conventions of real media products?”(continued)We tried to make the video look amateurish because it makes the video even funnier for the audience to watch. We made the video with lots of different shots which were edited together in short cuts to follow the lyrics of the music. We didn't want to make the video look like a lot of money has been spent on it because our video is made for a unsigned artist so it shouldn't look really professional. We also put different beats and cuts together which made the video flow better because the song runs at a fast tempo. We also cut the shots to go with the beat and lyrics to make the video look like it is cut at a precise time. We compared our video to another amateur video to see how similar it is. We compared it with the Bruno mars video- the lazy song. It looks very similar but the difference is the Bruno mars video was shot as one scene and ours is lots of shots and cuts put together.
Evaluation“In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the codes and conventions of real media products?”(continued)Our album cover is made to look humorous as our video is made to look amusing as well . The lyrics and back page are meant to show the relationship between two friends that have worked together to get the album out. We made our CD front cover in colour and the back page to be in black and white to add effect to the lyrics on the back. It is also made to set an example of what the music on the CD represents.
EvaluationHow effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? The combination of the music video and the CD cover fit together well as they both are made to look low budget and funny. We made it similar by looking at what the actors look like in the video and made it look the same on the CD cover. We kept looking at what our personalities were like in the video and tried making it show on the CD front cover. Our video is a quite jokey, having fun all the time and we made it show in the CD cover as we look like we are having fun. There are parts of the video where we are quite serious as the screen shot on the right shows. It proves that we are also performing out music rather than just entertaining our audience by messing about.
EvaluationWhat have you learned from your audience feedback? In this project I have found out that our feedback from friends have been all similar. They have all said it was funny and that's what made the video good. People also said that the lyrics “truth or dare” was not in sync properly, so we changed that and then showed them again and they said it was better. We also put our video on YouTube and we got a comment from someone saying it was good. We also put the video on face book and got our friends to have a look at it and comment on it, we got loads of comments. We also had both our teachers check over our music video to see what we could improve and there feedback was to change a few shots because they did not suit the music well.
EvaluationWhat have you learned from your audience feedback?(continued)Face Book commentsThis comment(above) made us go back and change what we done because he noticed a few things, which was incredibly help full. we also had 21 face book likes and a lot of comments like the one below.
EvaluationHow did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? In this project I used a lot of different ways to research music videos and research album covers. I mainly used a lot of web 2.0, which was looking at music videos and album covers on the internet. I looked at a lot of music videos on YouTube. I also used my teachers blog to have a look at previous years work. I looked at there videos and album covers of every genre just to get ideas on what there video was like compared to there album cover to see how similar they are. Also for my research I looked at the real midnight beast video to see how they made there video and compared it to ours, they are both similar by making it look like friends having fun, rather than actors on set. On YouTube the videos I looked at are all by signed artists. I compared them to a unsigned artist to show the difference in quality as unsigned artists do not have a big budget. I also looked at previous years storyboards to get a idea on what to plan and I also looked at what shot types look good for the upbeat music of Booty Call. We used IMovie to edit and cut our shots together.
