This document summarizes 9 shots from a student media project about domestic abuse. It analyzes the camera angles, lighting, emotions, and intentions behind each shot. Several shots show intimate wedding moments to establish the couple's past happiness. Later shots utilize close-ups and low angles to portray the male character's aggression and dominance as he verbally and physically abuses his wife. Blue filters and shadowy lighting are used to convey coldness and a menacing atmosphere. The shots are intended to realistically depict domestic abuse while also empowering the abuser and eliciting sympathy for the victim from the audience.

and conventions of real life media products.

2. Do we follow the codes and conventions?
As a whole I think that it doesn't challenge the codes and conventions of
a typical drama film however, we do challenged some of them but I think
this is mainly because of the controversial topic choice however we do
try and stick to some of the conventions.
Things we do...
• We use high angle and low angle shots of the characters as well as close ups
• We use dulled/dimmed lighting
• There is alcohol and violence and technology
• We give the audience a chance to sympathies and connect with our female character as it is
something that happens in real life, but we also give them a chance to get to know our characters a
little by showing their wedding day an event that is special and intimate event to all married
couples.
• We give a realistic storyline

4. Shot 1:
Shot one is a low angle shot that shows the two main characters on their wedding day. We chose to
do a wedding as it is the ultimate form of commitment and shows the deep love for one another
and we thought that if we started off with something as powerful as this it would set the scene to
the audience and shows them that the couple were once happy but as it is a flashback it implies
that something has changed, hopefully causing a bit of suspense for the viewer. You can see the
lines going through the film either side of the shot we used an effect called 'Aged film' to get these
to make the film look like an old wedding video. At this stage of the film it suggests that it is a part
of the romantic genre however as the film progresses you can see that in fact it is not. It is common
with wedding scenes in films for them to zoom in on the characters so we decided to try it out and
it worked well.
Shot 2:
Its hard to say what shot type this scene was in as when editing it I put an effect on so it zoomed in on them
however it is mainly a mid shot. It shows of the characters costumes well; our female in a wedding dress
and our male in a suite but this shot type also shows of their emotions and in this scene they are extremely
happy. They have just got married and are off to celebrate and this is portrayed in their faces and body
language that they are physically close to one another and holding hands but also their bodies are relaxed
all of this shows that they are comfortable with one another and have no reason to be fearful. You can see
that they are still by the church as they've just walked out of its door and so it looks as if they are going to
leave for their honeymoon. It is common in films that when they show a wedding a part of it is in slow
motion to really capture the emotions of the characters and so we decided to put this scene in to slow
motion and in our case it is extremely effective.

5. Shot 3:
Shot three is a close up of our male character pouring out vodka for himself, you can
see that there are beers scattered on the tabled and caps from empty bottles too
portraying him as an alcoholic and with that assumption comes a lot of different
personality traits to a loving husband, as he was shown previously. We wanted to
use a close up for this part of the scene to really try and show the audience that he's
a changed man and not for the good that he isn't a nice character and that's why he
proceeds to hit his wife.
Shot 4:
Shot four is a mid close up of the towel that our male character is holding, it shows him
pulling on it aggressively implying that he is angry about something. We wanted it to be
around his chest area to also show off the physique of our actor tat he is a muscular man
and that our character with built up anger could do some damage if he was to let it out
on someone or something. The colours in this scene are heightened, we wanted to try
and make it seem like a heightened sense of reality as even though we are showing it to
be real in our footage we want our viewers to remember that it isn't a common thing
within marriage that it is a rarity.

6. Shot 5:
Shot five is a low angle close up we wanted to empower our
character making him look like the dominant one but we also
wanted to show of his facial expression as it gives an insight to what
he is going to do next; which is abuse his wife.
Shot 6:
Shot six is showing our male character throwing his wife up
against the wall at full pelt. we wanted to use a mid/wide shot
to show this as we would be able to capture the full action
within the scene. It shows him as an aggressive horrible man
and gives a the audience a chance to connect with the wife
again and feel bad for her as she is being abused. In the shot he
is stood up and she is slightly bend over again showing that he
is the dominant figure in the relationship.

7. Shot 7:
We decided to put a blue filter over the scenes where he is abusing her because the colour
blue has connotations of being cold. Cold being separate from one another hopefully
showing the distance between the two characters now but also in German to be blue
means to be drunk which fits well as he is an alcoholic so using the colour blue could be
interpreted as him not being able to see straight as he is intoxicated. We used a mid close
up to show her emotion and hurt her head is bowed to show she is cowering away but is
also ashamed and her hand on her cheek as she was injured but doesn't want it to show.
We also put it into slow motion to emphasis what had just happened to the viewers and to
also amplify the pain she's going through.
Shot 8:
The lighting in this shot is key we wanted to make him look like a gloomy menacing
character so by positioning the light behind him it drowns out his features almost like a
shadow. His body language is so important in this scene too we got him strut and bounce
as he walks round the door corner like how a boxer prepares himself to fight making our
character look like he's not finished with his wife and is going for round two. We put this
scene into slow motion as well to really show the bounce in his walk to highlight the
emotions he is feeling, anger and annoyed.

8. Shot 9:
This shot is right at the end of the film when our character is verbally
abusing his wife. We used a close up on his face from a low angle to again
empower him but also to show the anger in his face and brings focus to how
her verbally abuses her. After this shot it dissolves into the title 'Rose Tinted'
and it shows how tinted her view was on him, she only focused on the nice
parts of him i.e. the wedding. Which is why we showed it first and she
pushes him abusing her down in her thoughts which is why we showed it
second.
