The new Blackboard Portfolio tool released with Blackboard learn in April 2014 is much-improved and provides an easy-to-use platform for students to demonstrate and reflect upon what they have learned throughout their university career. Northern Illinois University (NIU) implemented the portfolios campus-wide during 2015, and it was used by thousands of students in a relatively short time. This presentation at BbWorld16 will provide an overview of the portfolio tool, strategies for developing portfolios that serve different purposes, and best practices for institutional adoption. Sample portfolios and exemplars from faculty who are using Blackboard portfolios in their classes will be shared, along with NIU’s campus-wide implementation process. Opportunities and challenges will be discussed to provide insights for others planning to roll-out portfolios at their institutions.

UOW Exemplar Moodle Site with DLT’s - Lynley Clark, Blackboard and Denise Spa...Blackboard APAC
The University of Wollongong and Blackboard have collaborated to develop an exemplary course for staff that demonstrates best practice for digital learning within Moodle. In 2015, the University implemented a set of minimum expectations and good practice elements called the Digital Learning Thresholds (DLT). The DLT strategy supports the principle that all students will have access to digital learning and both staff and students have clear expectations about the use of digital learning within the curriculum. This session will be co-presented by Lynley Clark from Blackboard and Denise Spanswick from the University of Wollongong (UOW). It will discuss how Lynley and a small team of Educational Designers from UOW worked together to incorporate the DLT elements into examples of activities and resources within a Moodle site with the aim of providing a model or exemplar to develop staff’s understanding of digital learning in a way that could more easily translate to their own subject development and an exceptional learning experience for UOW students.

Feedback from students calling for a consistent look and feel in Blackboard (Interact 2) subject sites has resulted in Charles Sturt University (CSU) investigating the development and implementation of a standardised template.
The presentation will discuss the background to the project including what, when, and why in terms of template and cover feedback from staff and students that have used the templates. Discussion will be garnered from the audience on their thoughts on our implementation process.

During this online session offered 12/17/13, we explored suggested best practices included in the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program Rubric for designing engaging online courses. Administering a customised, printable certificate of completion in Blackboard...Blackboard APAC
While badges and achievements have their place, some training programs often still require participants to have a printed or PDF certificate bearing their name as proof of completing a task. Griffith University developed a tool to fit this need some years ago and it has recently been transformed into a Blackboard Building Block, allowing more sustainable usage and customisation options. This presentation will talk through the history of the project and demonstrate the capabilities of the new Building Block.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have gained momentum in recent years and offer a new opportunity for interaction with potential university students. While MOOCs have been seen as a disruptive force for higher education, they have provided spaces to explore innovative approaches and emerging technologies that can then be integrated into regular university course content. Designing courses that are not aligned with any accreditation requirements has
allowed the flexibility to creatively experiment and push boundaries. Using Blackboard’s Open Education platform, Charles Darwin University has developed and delivered 3 MOOCs showcasing creative approaches to otherwise traditional course content.
This presentation will showcase CDU’s processes, innovative approaches, and lessons learnt. As a bonus, you will also see inside the Memory MOOC’s visually stunning “Memory Palace” and see how learning Accounting was brought to life through interactive video and branching scenarios in the “Who’s Counting” MOOC.
Improving 180 Blackboard Sites in 180 Days - Christian King & Sandra Thwaites...Blackboard APAC
At many universities, the Blackboard subject site is the primary interface for the student learning experience. If the site is poorly organised, students do not know how to navigate the learning experience, such as when to engage with what content. If assessment criteria are minimally indicated, the quality of submissions suffers. If no tools are used to foster interaction, the learning experience becomes isolating. Conversely, when Bb sites are effectively designed and maintained, the quality of the student learning experience tends to be high. The quality of Bb sites varies across universities and within programs of study. Students who experience a well-designed site in their first semesters come to expect this standard in subsequent semesters.
Bond University thereby undertook a whole-of-university strategic priority project to improve 180 Bb subject sites in 180 days. Associate Deans (Learning & Teaching) in each faculty selected the sites. The initial quality of the sites varied, with many assessed as initially high quality, meaning that improvement meant moving from strength to strength and focusing on elements such as increasing elements of technology enhanced learning. The co-facilitators of this presentation are the academic developers who worked one-on-one with each of the participating academics. Therefore, from their perspectives, the key takeaways for attending delegates will be:
- Identification of challenges and stumbling blocks, as well as success strategies
- Checklists and professional development materials
- Illustration of before and after improvements as exemplars
- Ideas for increasing elements of technology enhanced learning
- Templates for emails, announcements and other communications

Our journey with the technology is enabling some teachers to flip their classrooms. We will explain how far this has progressed and the potential benefits and pitfalls for teachers of international students.
Developing online courses is only the first step in a much longer process. In this session, we explored how to create a culture to support continuous improvement and looked at new tools to visualize the process.

Associate Deans (Learning & Teaching) in each faculty selected the sites. The initial quality of the sites varied, with many assessed as initially high quality, meaning that improvement meant moving from strength to strength and focusing on elements such as increasing elements of technology enhanced learning. The co-facilitators of this presentation are the academic developers who worked one-on-one with each of the participating academics. Therefore, from their perspectives, the key takeaways for attending delegates will be:

The current evaluation processes at many colleges do not specifically address online instruction, and most academic administrators have limited personal experience with online course design and instruction. Two useful documents will be shared in this webinar. The first is a five-part Pre-Evaluation Worksheet. The second document is a five-category rubric for evaluating teaching performance of online instructors. The rubric could be used as a self-evaluation for faculty, as part of a peer review evaluation, or as part of an academic administrator’s evaluation of faculty. These documents are sharable and editable. Use these documents to start a faculty evaluation process or to build upon your existing process.

In order to determine how much participants learn and benefit from attending learning programs and how much the learning has impacted performance, learning evaluation is critical. Unfortunately, many organizations do not place great importance in learning evaluations - just getting general reactions from the participants or completing simple Questions & Answers tests.
The more effectively you can measure and prove competence, the more likely you can turn learning into a tangible corporate benefit. To be effective, assessment cannot be an afterthought or instructional add-on. It needs to be embedded, contextualized, and executed within the learning process.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
