The document discusses different aspects of etiquette that children should learn at various stages, including manners at the table from a young age, showing gratitude using words like "please" and "thank you", and behaving respectfully towards adults. It also notes that children should follow classroom rules set by teachers at school, as the etiquette expectations may differ from what is expected at home. In general, children can learn that observing etiquette rules in all environments will help them interact smoothly.

In this special edition of Political Economic Digest Series, we will look back at some of the highly commendable voluntary efforts made by the people (individuals and groups), coming together for the victims spontaneously, as the earthquake hit. The articles that follow contain documentations of how people acted on their own, in any capacity they could, rather than waiting for the government relief to reach the victims of the quake. Additional articles feature opinions about the spirit of entrepreneurship that has been gaining grounds in Nepal, and also about how the affected people have lost their homes but not their skills – the skills that the people will use to rise again. In the article “A new generation will help Nepal rise up and rebuild,” by Tashi Sherpa, he talks about the faith he has in the entrepreneurial youth of the nation and expresses his belief in them in re-building the country. The article “Unbent and unbowed,” by Samrat Katwal, contains additionally, useful words of caution as we move towards the reconstruction phase. He talks about protecting and using the indigenous knowledge about construction in different topographical and cultural regions of the country.

A Letter Soup
By Pedro Pablo Sacristan
Once upon a time there was a very evil and
unpleasant crook who only ever thought about how to get
money. Seeing anyone happy bothered the crook
enormously. What he hated most was when people were
polite and courteous to each other, saying things like
please and thank you, and don't mention it. It annoyed
him even more if they were smiling when they said these
things.
The crook thought all those kinds of words were a
useless waste, and weren't good for anything. So what
he did was spend a lot of time inventing a machine
which could steal words. With this machine, he
planned to steal 'please', 'thank you', 'don't mention
it', and similar words people used to be polite. He
was convinced that no one would notice if those words
were to suddenly disappear. When he had stolen these
words, he intended to take them apart and sell the
letters to book publishers.

The crook was terribly happy with his success, but he didn't count on a couple of very special little girls. Those girls were deaf, and had to communicate using sign language. Now,becausethe machine couldn't steal gestures, these girls continued being kind and polite. Soon they realised what had been happening to everyone else, and they found out about the crook and his wicked plan.

3. There was once a rather amusing King. It was very
unusual. No matter how many times he told people to
do things, they would never obey him. As he was also a
a peaceful and just King, who didn't want to punish or
imprison anyone, he ended up with no authority. So the
King decided to get a great wizard to come up with a
a magic potion which would get people to obey him.The
4. -"These are the spells that I have prepared for you,
your highness. Use the first before saying that which you
want your subjects to do, and use the second when they
have done it. A smile will indicate that the person
remains under your power. Do this, and the spell will
last forever."
Everyone was intrigued, curious to hear the spells;
especially the King. Before using them he read them
several times to himself, trying to memorise them. A
servant was passing by, carrying a large turkey in his
arms.The King said to him,
-"Please, Apolonio, come here and let me see that
magnificent turkey."
Apolonio, surprised by the King's kindness, and never
having heard him say 'please' before, approached the
5. -"Thank you, Apolonio, you may go."
And the servant left, smiling. It had worked!
And, even better, Apolonio remained under
the King's power, just as the young man had
had said! The grateful King, festooned the
young man with riches, and the young man
decided to continue on his journey.
But before he left, the old wizard
approached him, asking him where he had
gotten his extraordinary magical powers,
6. -"My magic does not lie in those worthless
parchments which I wrote on arriving at
at the palace. I got my magic from school
school as a child. My teacher constantly
repeated that with good manners you could
get anything. And he was right.Your good
King only needed good manners and
some politeness to get just what he
wanted.”
The wizard, understanding the truth of this,
spent that night destroying all his
contraptions, and magical junk. He

1.We’re not perfect.
2.We make mistakes.
3.We’ve been known to lose our temper on
occasion.
4.We’re not always “on duty.”
5.We’re more apt to give advice about your
table manners when we’re paid to do so,
so there’s no need to be afraid to eat
around us.
19. Children undergo
developmental stages that
determine what manners and
rules they can manage at a
given age, and this pertains to
their behaviour at the table.
Parents should coach their
children regarding how to hold
and use utensils, how to use a
napkin, manners in chewing and
eating, and interaction with the
family or others sitting at the
table. Children also learn to
show appreciation to the cook
and appropriate etiquette for
leaving the table and clearing
one's place.
20. From the early days when children
learn to talk, they quickly learn the
words ''mine," ''please'' and ''thank
you.'' Therefore even the youngest
children can grasp the concept of
showing gratitude and using kind
manners when speaking to others and
making a request. In this area of
etiquette, parents may provide their
children with set phrases and
example situations, then help them
practice such phrases and when they
might be used.
21. Children of any age should learn
how to behave with kindness and
respect toward adults. This area
of etiquette is important to teach,
since children may interact easily
with peers but feel shy or
uncertain in the presence of
adults. Again, coaching and
practice phrases can be helpful to
encourage children to maintain
eye contact with adults, shake
hands, respond to pleasantries
and have a conversation. Children
can learn that adults enjoy
interaction with children and
being made to feel special.
School
22. At school, children are expected
to follow slightly different rules
than at home or when in a
purely social situation. In
school, whether preschool or
elementary school, students are
expected to follow the rules of
the classroom and teacher.
Parents can speak with their
children and remind them to
respect and listen to their
teachers and observe all rules
even if the rules are different
from home. In general, children
should learn that following
etiquette rules in all areas will
make life go more smoothly.
