Criteria for Ethical Decision Making
Most ethical dilemmas involve a conflict between the needs of the part and the whole—the individual versus the organization or the organization versus society as a whole. For example, should a company scrutinize job candidates' or employees' social media postings, which might benefit the organization as a whole but reduce the individual freedom of employees? Or should products that fail to meet tough Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards be exported to other countries where government standards are lower, benefiting the company but potentially harming world citizens? Sometimes ethical decisions entail a conflict between two groups. For example, should the potential for local health problems resulting from a company's effluents take precedence over the jobs it creates as the town's leading employer?
Managers faced with these kinds of tough ethical choices often benefit from a normative strategy—one based on norms and values—to guide their decision making. Normative ethics uses several approaches to describe values for guiding ethical decision making. Five approaches that are relevant to managers are the utilitarian approach, individualism approach, moral-rights approach, justice approach, and practical approach.27

3. Introduction
Ethical dilemmas in business are complex situations that require
careful consideration of moral and ethical principles. These
dilemmas arise when there is a conflict between what is right and
what is profitable.
Businesses face ethical dilemmas on a regular basis, and how they
handle these situations can have a significant impact on their
reputation, customer loyalty, and bottom line.
5. Environmental Responsibility
One of the most pressing ethical dilemmas in business
today is environmental responsibility. Many companies
prioritize profits over sustainability, leading to practices that
harm the environment and contribute to climate change.
However, consumers are increasingly demanding
environmentally responsible products and services, and
companies that fail to meet these expectations risk losing
customers and damaging their reputation.
6. Labor Practices
Another common ethical dilemma in business is labor
practices. Companies may be tempted to cut costs by
exploiting cheap labor in developing countries, but this can
lead to human rights abuses and poor working conditions.
On the other hand, paying fair wages and ensuring safe
working conditions can increase production costs and reduce
profits. Balancing these competing interests requires careful
consideration of ethical principles and long-term
consequences.
7. Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a growing trend
in business, as companies recognize the importance of
giving back to their communities and supporting social
causes.
However, there is often a tension between CSR initiatives
and the pursuit of profits. Some argue that companies
should focus solely on maximizing shareholder value,
while others believe that businesses have a responsibility
to use their resources for the greater good.
8. Data Privacy
With the rise of technology and big data, data privacy
has become a major ethical concern for businesses.
Companies collect vast amounts of personal
information from their customers, which can be used
for targeted advertising or sold to third parties.
However, consumers are increasingly aware of the
risks of data breaches and the potential misuse of
their personal information. Businesses must balance
the benefits of data collection with the need to protect
consumer privacy and maintain trust.
9. Bribery and Corruption
Bribery and corruption are pervasive ethical dilemmas in
business, particularly in developing countries where
government officials may demand bribes in exchange for
permits or contracts.
While bribery may seem like a quick way to secure
business deals, it undermines the rule of law and
perpetuates poverty and inequality. Companies that engage
in bribery and corruption risk legal and reputational
damage, as well as the loss of public trust.
10. In order to solve ethical problems, companies and
organizations should develop strict ethical standards for
their employees. Every company must demonstrate its
concerns regarding the ethical norms within the
organization. In addition, companies may provide
ethical training for their employees.
Solutions
11. Conclusions
Ethical dilemmas in business are complex and multifaceted,
requiring and multifaceted, requiring careful consideration of
competing interests and values. However, companies that
navigate these dilemmas successfully can build trust, loyalty,
and reputation among stakeholders, ultimately leading to long-
term success.
By adopting transparent, accountable, and socially responsible
practices, companies can not only meet their financial goals but
also contribute to a better world for everyone.
