pH contributes to the hyperventilation observed in humans in response to high intensity workload.
During the experiment, the plasma pH was the vocal point of this experiment where five healthy
male subjects preformed a ramp exercise. The experiment was done to see if the reduction in plasma
pH and the development of exercise hyperventilation is conclusive data to the hypothesis that says,
...Hyperventilation is a ventilatory compensation of the metabolic acidosis that develops at high
workloads and could be triggered, at least in part, by the reduction in plasma pH. (Journal of

The Period Of South Asian History
Society and government in our day and age is much more secular than it has been for most of
human history. In fact, many countries, such as the United States of America, even have laws
built into their governments constitutions establishing a barrier between religion and
government. But throughout humanity s past, it was quite common across many diverse
societies for religion and politics to overlap; religion often influenced politics and politics often
used religion for practical purposes. In the process of trying to come up with a topic to research
on South Asian history in the ancient and medieval periods, I was very interested in this
relationship between religion and politics and knew I would want to pursue this topic in my
paper. The period of South Asian history to which I narrowed my focus to was that of the
Mauryan Empire and the post Mauryan polities that existed in the times after the collapse of the
Mauryan Empire. Thus, the period I focused my research and paper on fits primarily within the
years of circa 321 BCE to around 320 CE. The leading question behind my research was that I
wanted to research the nature of the relationship that existed between politics and the religions
present during this time in the region of South Asia; I wanted to examine whether this relationship

It is unnecessary for many of these criminals to be held in prison since there isn t any room for
them in the first place. One way that the federal prison system can ease the overcrowding problem
would be to simply release the non violent criminals back into society with a fine or on probation.

more inhumane with the number of prisoners added each year. Many prisons suffer from lack of
resources for their inmates such as proper medical facilities, extra prison cells, and resources to

A Common Technique Used By John Updike
A common technique used by authors throughout literature is the growth of the main character into
their own. From the maturation of a selfish soul into a triumphant hero, or the rise of a shunned
underdog into a loved champion, authors have create situations for their characters that teach
readers a significant life lesson about the world we live in. For example, John Updike s Sammy
from A P and Flannery O Connor s Grandmother from A Good Man is Hard to Find
both receive
wake up calls from the respective antagonists of their stories. They are put in high stress situations
where their morals and beliefs are pushed to the limit. Both O Connor and Updike utilized the high
stress situations to make the readerquestion their own beliefs; therefore, causing the readers to
empathize with the main characters. Sammy and the Grandmother experience unique situations
that force them to question their way of thinking; however, those lessons are not restricted to
them, but also lessons everyone has to learn. John Updike does a great job of creating a
character in Sammy that young boys are able to relate to, and then making him mature due to a
shocking realization about the real world. Like most teenage boys, he is sarcastic and
opinionated, but Sammy sets himself apart by being oddly observant. The mundane routine of his
boring bag boy job is turned upside down when the three girls around his age walk in. He

He describes Sargent by the color of his skin rather than as an equal or someone he could help.
This racial tension continues through the second half of Mr. Dorset description where he goes on
to express him as a human piece of night with snow on his face . Hughes again uses this contrast
between a black night and white snow to illustrate how Mr. Dorset focuses entirely on race
throughout this interaction.
Because Sargent has a different skin color, Mr. Dorset turns him away without any compassion.
Despite being a holy man , The Reverend tells Sargent to [g]o right on down this street four
blocks and turn to your left, walk up seven and you ll see the Relief Shelter. Mr. Dorset blurts out
these very general instructions without waiting to see if Sargent understood or even heard them
before he shut the door. These instructions are not only vague but also harsh as Sargent has to
walk eleven blocks through the snow before he can even see the Relief Shelter. While it is
reasonable for Mr. Dorset to not offer Sargent food or shelter in his own home, it shows the utter
lack of respect when he does not bother to talk to Sargent in a reasonable manner. When giving
directions it is common to include information such as street names, landmarks, or buildings that
give the person a sense they are going in the right direction, yet Mr. Dorset gives a trite, vague
