19. FLARE SYSTEM:
FLARES ARE IMPORTANT SAFETY DEVICES. THEY ARE USED THROUGHOUT THE
INDUSTRY AS A SAFETY MECHANISM TO ENSURE PROCESS UNITS DO NOT
EXCEED SAFETY LIMITS. THE USE OF FLARE IS UNLIMITED WHEREVER POSSIBLE.
HOWEVER FLASHING CAN OCCUR DURING UNPLANNED
OPERATIONAL INTERRUPTIONS, SCHEDULED DOWNTIME, AND SOMETIMES
DURING A STARTUP AND SHUTDOWN. GASES ARE COMBINED WITH STEAM AND
BURNED OFF
20. TO ENSURE MAXIMUM COMBUSTION AND MINIMIZE EMISSIONS. A FLARE IS USUALLY 20 - 150
METERS ABOVE THE GROUND. IT PREVENTS ANY POTENTIAL FOR THE HEAT GENERATED TO
AFFECT THE SURROUNDING EQUIPMENT OR PEOPLE WITHIN ITS ROUTINE.
FLARE FRONT GENERATE SYSTEM(FFG)
THE MOST WIDELY USED FLARE PILOT IGNITION SYSTEM IS THE COMPRESSED AIR
FLAME FRONT GENERATOR. WITH THIS SYSTEM COMPRESSED AIR AND FUEL GAS
ARE METERED THROUGH CONTROL VALVES IN TO A MIXING CHAMBER LOCATED AT
GRADE. DOWNSTREAM OF THE MIXING CHAMBER THERE IS A A SPARKING DEVICE
TO INITIATE THE FLAME FRONT(FIREBALL). DURING OPERATION THE FLOW OF FUEL
GAS IS ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND THE FLAME FRONT IS FIRST
PURGED, AND THEN FILLED WITH THE GAS/AIR MIX. THE MIX IN THE COMBUSTION
CHAMBER IS IGNITED AND THE FLAME FRONT IS INITIATED. THE FLAME FRONT
“FIREBALL”TRAVELS TO THE PILOT TIP WHERE IT IGNITES THE PILOT. WE CAN
IMPROVE PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FLARE
MATERIAL THROUGH IMPROVED RECOVERY AND REPROCESSING OF EXCESS
MATERIALS.
