What Are Academic Standards? Academic Standards are a combination of principles that are supposed to make clear what students should learn and what teachers should teach.  Standards developed by state departments of education have been developed to demonstrate what they expect of all students in the in the major 7 content areas discussed later.  Standards are supposed to hold all parts of the education environment accountable for results.
What Are Academic Standards? Performance Standards are the expected performance of students on measures of academic achievement. An example of a performance standard is the expectation that all students will score a minimum of 80% correct on a performance-based assessment.  Please note all students are expected to meet the same challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards. This is an extremely difficult task for the beginning level ESL teacher, but can be done with the proper resources, checks and balances systems, dedication and commitment to education.

ESL Standards Goal 1: To use English to communicate in social settings. Standard 1: Students will use English to participate in social interactions. Standard 2: Students will interact in, through, and with spoken and written English for personal expression and enjoyment. Standard 3: Students will use learning strategies to extend their communicative competence.
ESL Standards Goal 2: To use English to achieve academically in all content areas. Standard 1: Students will use English to interact in the classroom. Standard 2: Students will use English to obtain, process, construct, and provide subject matter information in spoken and written form. Standard 3: Students will use appropriate learning strategies to construct and apply academic knowledge.
ESL Standards Goal 3: To use English in socially and culturally appropriate ways. Standard 1: Students will use appropriate language variety, register, and genre according to audience, purpose, and setting. Standard 2: Students will use nonverbal communication appropriate to audience, purpose, and setting. Standard 3: Students will use appropriate learning strategies to extend their sociolinguistic and socio-cultural competence
Levels of Language Development Considerations for  assigning students to levels using percentile scores on an English Language measure.  Placement decisions should consider student age, maturity, native language proficiency, and grade level.
