Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) is both a versatile theoretical formalism based on logic and an efficient practical high-level programming language based on rules and constraints.
Procedural knowledge is often expressed by if-then rules, events and actions are related by reaction rules, change is expressed by update rules. Algorithms are often specified using inference rules, rewrite rules, transition rules, sequents, proof rules, or logical axioms. All these kinds of rules can be directly written in CHR. The clean logical semantics of CHR facilitates non-trivial program analysis and transformation. About a dozen implementations of CHR exist in Prolog, Haskell, Java, Javascript and C. Some of them allow to apply millions of rules per second. CHR is also available as WebCHR for online experimentation with more than 40 example programs. More than 200 academic and industrial projects worldwide use CHR, and about 2000 research papers reference it.

There are a number of interrelated concepts which make the understanding and implementation of HA complex. The potential for not implementing HA correctly would be disastrous.
This session was presented at the OpenStack Meetup in Boston Feb 2014. We discussed interrelated concepts as a basis for implementing HA and examples of HA for MySQL, Rabbit MQ and the OpenStack APIs primarily using Keepalived, VRRP and HAProxy which will reinforce the concepts and show how to connect the dots.

Integrating R and the JVM Platform - Alpine Data Labs' R Execute Operatoralpinedatalabs
Reactive programming is a phenomenal idea, but it's not always achievable "all the way down" in practice. In the real world, one rarely writes entire platforms from scratch and even then, one often needs to integrate with third-party applications that are blocking, stateful, and seem to violate nearly every reactive principle. In my talk, I will explain how Akka is still ideally suited to handle the integration of such systems into both reactive and non-reactive JVM code.
To illustrate the above claims, I will talk about Alpine Data Labs' JVM-R integration. Calls to the R language runtime to perform a data science computation are blocking given the constraints of R itself. Sessions have to be maintained since many messages have to be sent per R session (populating the R heap with DTOs, sending the script to be executed, etc.), and each actor can hold a TCP connection to a single R runtime. R is very prone to failure, be it due to poor memory management, dynamically typed, buggy user code, segmentation faults in native R packages, etc. I will show how Akka can handle all of these problems in a graceful manner to help integrate a faulty, non-engineering grade technology like R into a JVM enterprise application.
Eitaro Fukamachi presented on writing the fast web server Woo in Common Lisp. He discussed three tactics for achieving speed: using a multithreaded event-driven architecture instead of prefork, developing a fast HTTP parser instead of regular expressions, and using the libev event library. Benchmarks showed Woo was 1.6 times faster than Node.js. The goal was to create the fastest HTTP server in Common Lisp.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
