Precision scores
an ace
Whenever a higher enclosure protection category is required due to hot, metal dust-
laden or oily ambient conditions, Rittal liquid cooling concepts really come up
trumps.
Precise temperature control of machine and process cooling is another priority.
When cooling spindles with 40,000 rpm, for example, Rittal recooling systems
supply volumetric flows and coolant temperatures at precisely the required level.
Rittal system climate control is the key to a high level of dimensional accuracy,
consistently perfect workpieces, and stable production conditions.

● The coolant temperature of the process
emulsion is precisely coordinated with the
machining cycle of the spindle rotating at
high speed, thanks to the immersion
recooling system (7).
● Process heat from the welding robot and
heat loss from the PC case of the robot
controller (18) – case based on TS 8,
equipped with air/water heat exchanger
(17) – is effectively dissipated via Rittal
recooling systems (1).
● The twin-doored enclosure ES 5000 with
air/water heat exchanger, wall-mounted
(8), is integrated into the design of the
machines.
● Rittal thermoelectric coolers (16) are a
particularly compact, efficient solution
for cooling the Rittal Comfort Panel (13)
command panels.

Rittal system climate control for data centres and IT
Cool and efficient!
A high performance server in the data centre or in the middle of the office? Without
putting additional thermal pressure on the air-conditioning system? Without the
irritating noise of high-speed fan-and-filter units? All that can now be achieved very
easily!
Because Rittal Liquid Cooling concepts offer new framework conditions for your
IT infrastructures in terms of flexibility, safety and cost-efficiency. Independent of the
room situation, with almost zero heat and noise emissions, individual server CPUs
and complete server units or electronic components receive direct, highly effective
cooling.
Modular concepts, tailored precisely to your current requirements, and easily
scalable to meet future needs.
Rittal CRAC systems
By using Rittal aisle containment,
● you can optimise air-conditioning of
the room
● in conjunction with the Rittal CRAC
system
● in terms of energy efficiency and
cooling output.
LCP – Liquid Cooling Package
Rittal solves the problem of climate control for
high heat losses per rack with this system
family.
● Extremely high heat loads are dissipated
from the rack via the LCP (air/water heat
exchanger).
● Additionally, this system also allows
temperature-neutral expansion of the
data centre.
Piping systems
The Rittal piping system provides the
link between the equipment and the
refrigeration system.
● An optimum design and targeted
media supply ensure efficient oper-
ation of all cooling components.

Example: Rittal system climate
control for data centres and IT
High heat loads in modern data centres,
maximum availability, and the most energy-
efficient climate control system available.
To accommodate all three requirements, you
will need an individual concept:
Rittal liquid cooling IT. Redundant chillers
(1), free cooling (1.1) and heat recovery (7).
Piping systems are designed on a project-
specific basis.
Data centre
● At the heart of this concept are server
racks (9) with the option of aisle
containment (8).
● The cold air required is blasted in via the
raised floor by two CRAC systems (10).
● Other LCP-cooled (11) computer cases
also operate without dissipating heat to
the ambient air.
Development server room, UPS
● The server systems are cooled via LCPs
(14), without a raised floor and without
putting pressure on the climate control
system. The heat is dissipated completely
silently via the piping system.
● All server racks are based on the TS 8
enclosure platform (15).
● The dissipation of heat loss from the UPS
is also integrated into the liquid cooling
concept via the air/water heat exchanger.
● Alternative recooling via LCP Inline or
LCP Extend.
Administration, monitoring
● All function and safety-relevant
components are remotely monitored with
Rittal CMC-TC. Messages and controls
occur centrally in the control room (23).
● Super-low-noise roof-mounted fans (23)
cool the network enclosures in the office.
An even quieter alternative are air/water
heat exchangers integrated into the
coolant cycle.
● EMC fan-and-filter units with speed
control (24) ensure fault-free operation
and cooling of the control room consoles.
The result: Targeted, low-noise, energy
efficient!

Rittal system climate control for various ambient conditions
TopTherm-Plus
Cleaning, phosphating, dipcoat-priming, spray-finishing, drying. The process
chain in a spray-finishing plant creates extremely varied ambient conditions – and
this also affects climate control of the controllers. Whether humidity, paint dust or
drying heat – these varying requirements are met by a single product range:
Rittal TopTherm-Plus cooling units.
With nano-coating of the heat exchanger surfaces, this ensures a high level of
efficiency and exceptional durability.
Rittal cooling units – Masters of energy efficiency
TopTherm-Plus cooling units
Cooling units keep the enclosure
internal temperature at a constant
level, even to below room tempera-
ture, with the air routing being tai-
lored to individual requirements. Two
separate circuits prevent the ingress
of dust into the enclosure.
● Climate control doors
● Roof-mounted cooling units
● Wall-mounted cooling units
Electronic condensate evaporation
Any condensate incurred is effectively
evaporated and doesn’t need to be
collected or dissipated.
Your value-added:
● Enhanced safety – No condensate drips
onto the floor.
● Time savings – No need to empty
condensate containers.
● Cost benefits – No need to lay condensate
tubing.
Master/slave mode
In open bayed enclosure systems,

exchangers with Comfort control
are set to master/slave mode via a
bus cable:
● Even temperature distribution
across all sections of the enclosure.
● Simultaneous activation and
deactivation of the devices.
● Parallel system and door limit
switch function.

System climate control for final assembly and handling systems
Air versus heat
Even in apparently non-critical ambient conditions, for example when there is an
adequate supply of clean, cool air, it is still worthwhile to provide climate control.
Here too, the aim is to achieve maximum reliability with exceptional efficiency.
Reliability and efficiency with fan-and-filter units: Temperature-dependent speed
control plus temperature and airflow monitoring.
Reliability and efficiency with air/air heat exchangers: Thanks to separate air
circuits (external/internal), dust remains excluded, while a micro-controller
provides temperature-dependent control and monitoring of key parameters.
The benefit to you: Efficient reliability at all times.
Fan-and-filter units
Fan-and-filter units are ideal for
dissipating heat loads cost-effectively.
● The prerequisite is that the ambient
air must be relatively clean with a
temperature below the desired
enclosure internal temperature.
● The entire range of fan-and-filter
units is also available with EMC
shielding.
Air/air heat exchangers
The requirement for using air/air heat
exchangers is that the ambient temperature
must be below the required enclosure internal
temperature.
● Dust and contaminated ambient air is
unable to ingress the enclosure, thanks
to the two separate air circuits.
Machine, process and
enclosure cooling
● Operational reliability thanks
to liquid cooling e.g. of high-
frequency motor spindles and
other drive technology.
● Precise workpiece machining
thanks to precise, constant
temperatures of the cooling media.
● In this way, temperature peaks
inside enclosures – for example,
in summer – can be effectively
dissipated via air/water heat
exchangers.

Convection Radiation
There are three basic forms of heat transfer:
Thermal conduction:
Heat is transported by matter, without the matter itself being
moved. The energy is passed from particle to particle.
Convection:
Energy flows with the matter. The transport medium, e.g. a
liquid or gas, takes up energy in the form of heat and
dissipates energy as heat.
Radiation:
Heat is passed from one body to another in the form of
radiation energy, without a medium material.
The decisive factor for the type of heat dissipation to be used
in enclosures is whether they are open (air-permeable) or
closed (air-tight). Whereas in open enclosures, the heat is
dissipated by means of air circulation, in closed enclosures
the heat can only be dissipated via the enclosure wall.
Rittal cooling units provide the ideal system solution for
ensuring an optimum operating temperature inside an air-
tight enclosure, even at high external temperatures.
On the following pages, you will find a chrono-
logical guide to help you to easily find the most
suitable climate control solution.
Guide to selecting suitable units
As electronic components become ever smaller and are
more densely packed in enclosures and electronic cases,
systems are becoming increasingly sensitive to external
factors such as dust, oil, moisture and temperature.
Heat in particular is a deadly enemy of sensitive
microelectronics.
For example, a general rule of thumb for semi-conductors
is that an increase in the operating temperature of 10°C,
in relation to the maximum permissible operating
temperature, will shorten its service life by half.
In order to guarantee proper functioning of the electronics,
this heat needs to be dissipated.

The following pages contain detailed calculation formulae for your chosen option.
Calculation of effective enclosure surface area
Of the variables required for calculation purposes, the effec-
tive enclosure surface area A requires special explanation.
The thermal output dissipated by the enclosure not only
depends on its actual surface area; the installation type of
the enclosure also plays a decisive role.
An enclosure which stands in a room unobstructed on all
sides may dissipate more heat than one sited against a wall
or in a niche. For this reason, there are precise specifications
on how to calculate the effective enclosure surface area
depending on the type of installation site. The formulae
for calculating A are specified in DIN 57 660, part 500 and
IEC 890 (see table below).

In natural convection, heat loss is dissipated to the outside
via the enclosure panels. The prerequisite for this is that the
ambient temperature must be lower than the temperature
inside the enclosure. The maximum temperature increase
(ΔT)max. which may occur inside an enclosure compared with
the ambient air is calculated as follows:
Note:
If the heat loss inside the enclosure is not known, this
basic formula can be used to calculate actual heat loss,

Condensation and dehumidification of enclosure air
when using cooling units
One unavoidable side-effect of using cooling units is the
dehumidification of the enclosure’s interior air. As it cools
down, part of the humidity contained in the air condenses
on the evaporator coil. This condensate must be reliably
discharged from the enclosure. The amount of condensate
occurring depends on relative humidity, the air temperature
inside the enclosure and on the evaporator coil, and the air
volume present in the enclosure. The Mollier h-x diagram
shows the water content of air depending on its temperature
and relative air humidity.

Practical tips
In all situations where optimum operating temperatures
are required inside an enclosure, even at high external
temperatures, a Rittal enclosure cooling unit can provide
the right solution. It is even possible to cool the interior
temperature of the enclosure to well below the ambient
temperature.
The favourable aerodynamic arrangement of the air inlet and
outlet openings in the internal and external circuits ensures
optimum air circulation inside the enclosure. This sample
calculation will show you a quick, time-saving method for
calculating a cooling unit.
For example:
A cooling unit with a refrigeration output of 1500 watts
commences operation with a temperature setting of
Ti = 35°C.
The relative ambient air humidity is 70 %. If air at 35°C is
passed over the evaporator coil, the surface temperature
of the evaporator coil (evaporation temperature of the
refrigerant) is approximately 18°C.
At the boundary layer adhering to the surface of the
evaporator coil, water is deposited at the dew point. The
difference Δx = x1 – x2 indicates how much condensation is
incurred per kg of air with complete dehumidification. The
leak-tightness of the enclosure has a decisive effect on the
quantity of condensation.
Enclosure door closed:
Only the enclosure volume is dehumidified.
Poorly sealed cable designs, damaged door seals and the
attachment of display media to enclosure surfaces lead to
increased rates of leakage in the enclosure. Hence, with a
leakage rate of, say, 5 m3/h, a continuous condensate
volume of up to 80 ml/h may occur.
Summary:
Enclosure cooling units should only operate with the door
closed.
● Seal the enclosure on all sides.
● Use a door limit switch.
● Use TÜV-tested equipment.
● Only set the enclosure internal temperature as low as is
actually needed.

Notes on water quality
For safe operation of the equipment, it is essential to observe
the VGB guidelines on cooling water (VGB-R 455 P).
Cooling water must not contain any limescale deposits or
loose debris; in other words, it should have a low level of
hardness, particularly a low level of calcium hardness. For
recooling within the plant, the calcium hardness should not
be too high. On the other hand, however, the water should
not be so soft that it attacks the operating materials. When
recooling the cooling water, the salt content should not be
allowed to increase excessively due to the evaporation of
large quantities of water, since electrical conductivity
increases as the concentration of dissolved substances
rises, and the water thereby becomes more corrosive. For
this reason, not only is it always necessary to add a
corresponding quantity of fresh water, but also to remove
part of the enriched water.
Gypsiferous water is unsuitable for cooling purposes
because it has a tendency to form boiler scale, which is
particularly difficult to remove. Furthermore, cooling water
should be free from iron and manganese, because otherwise
deposits may occur which settle in the pipes and block them.
At best, organic substances should only be present in small
quantities, because otherwise sludge deposits and
microbiological contamination may occur.

high cooling load is required, e.g. in process and machine
cooling, in media cooling or when dissipating heat loss from
enclosures via air/water heat exchangers.
Our project engineers will be happy to help you design
a recooling system for your specific application area. An
overview of the planning data required for this purpose

Cooling water
Preparation and maintenance of the water in recooling
systems
Depending on the type of installation to be cooled, certain
requirements are placed on the cooling water with respect
to purity. According to the level of contamination and the size
and design of the recooling systems, a suitable process is
used to prepare and/or maintain the water.
The most common types of contamination and most
frequently used techniques to eliminate them in industrial
cooling are:
Contamination of the water Procedure
Mechanical contamination
Filtering of water via

– Gravel filter
– Cartridge filter
– Precoated filter
Excessive hardness
Water softening via

Fan-and-filterunits
Fan-and-filter units
Fan-and-filter units are ideal for dissipating heat loads
cost-effectively. The prerequisite is that the ambient air
must be relatively clean with a temperature below the
desired enclosure internal temperature. The entire
range of fan-and-filter units is now also available with
EMC shielding and all required rated voltages.
43Rittal System Climate Control
Fan-and-filterunits
Aesthetics and
function
Typical of the Rittal fan-and-filter
unit design is the extremely low
build height. The super-slimline
vent grille guarantees optimum
air throughput with low noise
generation. Combined with the
technical features, Rittal fan-and-
filter units meet all application
requirements.
Benefits at a glance
● Air throughput from 20 m3/h to 700 m3/h
● Super-fast assembly
● IP 54 as standard
● Air flow direction may be reversed from
draw-in (default setting) to extracting
● All fans also available with EMC shielding
● Minimal installation depth
● Fan also bayable
Important
● The prescribed heat loss and the
maximum anticipated ambient
temperature define the required
volumetric flow
● Always use the fan-and-filter units
and outlet filters together
Tips and tricks
Applications see page 198
Selection criteria see page 199
Assembly see page 200
Application diversity and
functions
Particularly for applications in the food
industry, the hose-proof hood prevents the
ingress of damp. The protection category
of IP 56 is achieved in conjunction with filter
mats.
Not always full power!
At lower ambient temperatures, the air
throughput may be reduced. By adapting
the fan-and-filter speed to match the
temperature using a controller, noise
generation is reduced.
Also available with EMC shielding
All fan-and-filter units and outlet filters are
alternatively available with EMC shielding.
The required conductive connection is
achieved via a metallic coating on the fan-
and-filter unit housing and a special sealing
frame.
Fast assembly
Super-fast clip-on mounting
This guarantees fast, completely secure
attachment of the fan-and-filter unit. The
prerequisites for protection category
IP 54 are met as standard. Screws are not
required. Removal of the louvred grille, like-
wise without any screws, means that filter
mat changes can be achieved in next to no
time.
Draw-in or extract?
The air direction may be quickly reversed
from draw-in (default setting) to extracting.
Simply rotate the fan through 180°.

Applications see page 201
Rack-mounted fan
module
The rack-mounted fan slides into
the guide frame like a drawer.
Connectors on the rear ensure
immediate contact. Installation
options for the guide frame:
Directly in the subrack, via
two mounting brackets on the
482.6 mm (19˝) mounting angles.
Ideal for avoiding hot-spots in fully
populated enclosures.
Tangential fans
320 m3/h air throughput, 2 U
The high air throughput means that Rittal
tangential fans are capable of dissipating
large heat losses from the enclosure. The
minimal noise generation of 52 dB creates a
pleasant working environment. Front outlet
grille 2 U for hot air outlet to the outside in
the upper section of the enclosure.

Door-mounted fan
for server enclosures TS, TE
Specifically for installing in perforated doors.
The growing packaging density in data
communications and network enclosures make
active, direct ventilation of the enclosure indispen-
sable. The door-mounted fan, which is attached to
the rear or front door, supports horizontal air rout-
ing via the servers and therefore facilitates faster
heat dissipation from active components.
Technical specifications:
● Standard assembly with two fans.
● Air throughput, unimpeded air flow 600 m3/h.
● By adding two fan extension kits, the air
throughput is increased to 1200 m3/h.
● The direction of air flow is easily reversed by
rotating the fan.
● Several units may be positioned in a cascade
arrangement.
● Simple mounting on the tubular door frame.
Supply includes:
Wired ready for connection with 2.5 m connection
cable, including assembly parts.

60 Rittal System Climate Control
Air/airheatexchangers
Air/air heat exchangers
The requirement for using air/air heat exchangers is
that the ambient temperature must be below the
required enclosure internal temperature. Dust and any
aggressive ambient air is unable to ingress the
enclosure interior, thanks to the two separate air
circuits.
61Rittal System Climate Control
Air/airheatexchangers
Platform strategy/
installation
Identical installation cut-outs
for various output classes.
Easily retrofitted
Thanks to the low weight, simple
assembly cut-outs and problem-
free attachment of the heat
exchangers, a cabinet or
enclosure is easily retro-fitted.
Benefits at a glance
● Specific thermal output from 17.5 W/K to
90 W/K
● External and internal circuit may be
controlled separately
● Mounting cut-outs and enclosure
dimensions identical to TopTherm
wall-mounted cooling units
● Suitable for external and internal
mounting
● Top design identical to TopTherm wall-
mounted cooling units
Important
The temperature difference between the
room temperature and enclosure internal
temperature will have a decisive effect on
the heat loss that may be dissipated.

To accommodate all three requirements, you will need an individual concept: Rittal liquid cooling IT. Redundant chillers (1), free cooling (1.1) and heat recovery (7). Piping systems are designed on a project- specific basis. Data centre ● At the heart of this concept are server racks (9) with the option of aisle containment (8). ● The cold air required is blasted in via the raised floor by two CRAC systems (10). ● Other LCP-cooled (11) computer cases also operate without dissipating heat to the ambient air. Development server room, UPS ● The server systems are cooled via LCPs (14), without a raised floor and without putting pressure on the climate control system. The heat is dissipated completely silently via the piping system. ● All server racks are based on the TS 8 enclosure platform (15). ● The dissipation of heat loss from the UPS is also integrated into the liquid cooling concept via the air/water heat exchanger. ● Alternative recooling via LCP Inline or LCP Extend. Administration, monitoring ● All function and safety-relevant components are remotely monitored with Rittal CMC-TC. Messages and controls occur centrally in the control room (23). ● Super-low-noise roof-mounted fans (23) cool the network enclosures in the office. An even quieter alternative are air/water heat exchangers integrated into the coolant cycle. ● EMC fan-and-filter units with speed control (24) ensure fault-free operation and cooling of the control room consoles. The result: Targeted, low-noise, energy efficient! A B C

  • 29. 27Rittal System Climate Control Systemsolutions/finalassembly,handlingsystems System climate control for final assembly and handling systems Air versus heat Even in apparently non-critical ambient conditions, for example when there is an adequate supply of clean, cool air, it is still worthwhile to provide climate control. Here too, the aim is to achieve maximum reliability with exceptional efficiency. Reliability and efficiency with fan-and-filter units: Temperature-dependent speed control plus temperature and airflow monitoring. Reliability and efficiency with air/air heat exchangers: Thanks to separate air circuits (external/internal), dust remains excluded, while a micro-controller provides temperature-dependent control and monitoring of key parameters. The benefit to you: Efficient reliability at all times. Fan-and-filter units Fan-and-filter units are ideal for dissipating heat loads cost-effectively. ● The prerequisite is that the ambient air must be relatively clean with a temperature below the desired enclosure internal temperature. ● The entire range of fan-and-filter units is also available with EMC shielding. Air/air heat exchangers The requirement for using air/air heat exchangers is that the ambient temperature must be below the required enclosure internal temperature. ● Dust and contaminated ambient air is unable to ingress the enclosure, thanks to the two separate air circuits. Machine, process and enclosure cooling ● Operational reliability thanks to liquid cooling e.g. of high- frequency motor spindles and other drive technology. ● Precise workpiece machining thanks to precise, constant temperatures of the cooling media. ● In this way, temperature peaks inside enclosures – for example, in summer – can be effectively dissipated via air/water heat exchangers.

  • 34. Project planning Basic principles for the use of climate control components 32 Rittal System Climate Control Projectplanning Ambient conditions Enclosure interior problems Heat Heat loss Dust Condensate Cool Heat conduction Convection Radiation There are three basic forms of heat transfer: Thermal conduction: Heat is transported by matter, without the matter itself being moved. The energy is passed from particle to particle. Convection: Energy flows with the matter. The transport medium, e.g. a liquid or gas, takes up energy in the form of heat and dissipates energy as heat. Radiation: Heat is passed from one body to another in the form of radiation energy, without a medium material. The decisive factor for the type of heat dissipation to be used in enclosures is whether they are open (air-permeable) or closed (air-tight). Whereas in open enclosures, the heat is dissipated by means of air circulation, in closed enclosures the heat can only be dissipated via the enclosure wall. Rittal cooling units provide the ideal system solution for ensuring an optimum operating temperature inside an air- tight enclosure, even at high external temperatures. On the following pages, you will find a chrono- logical guide to help you to easily find the most suitable climate control solution. Guide to selecting suitable units As electronic components become ever smaller and are more densely packed in enclosures and electronic cases, systems are becoming increasingly sensitive to external factors such as dust, oil, moisture and temperature. Heat in particular is a deadly enemy of sensitive microelectronics. For example, a general rule of thumb for semi-conductors is that an increase in the operating temperature of 10°C, in relation to the maximum permissible operating temperature, will shorten its service life by half. In order to guarantee proper functioning of the electronics, this heat needs to be dissipated.

Calculation of effective enclosure surface area Of the variables required for calculation purposes, the effec- tive enclosure surface area A requires special explanation. The thermal output dissipated by the enclosure not only depends on its actual surface area; the installation type of the enclosure also plays a decisive role. An enclosure which stands in a room unobstructed on all sides may dissipate more heat than one sited against a wall or in a niche. For this reason, there are precise specifications on how to calculate the effective enclosure surface area depending on the type of installation site. The formulae for calculating A are specified in DIN 57 660, part 500 and IEC 890 (see table below). • 36. Project planning General information 34 Rittal System Climate Control Projectplanning Calculation basis for enclosure climate control In natural convection, heat loss is dissipated to the outside via the enclosure panels. The prerequisite for this is that the ambient temperature must be lower than the temperature inside the enclosure. • 38. Project planning Cooling units 36 Rittal System Climate Control Projectplanning Cooling units Condensation and dehumidification of enclosure air when using cooling units One unavoidable side-effect of using cooling units is the dehumidification of the enclosure’s interior air. As it cools down, part of the humidity contained in the air condenses on the evaporator coil. This condensate must be reliably discharged from the enclosure. The amount of condensate occurring depends on relative humidity, the air temperature inside the enclosure and on the evaporator coil, and the air volume present in the enclosure. The Mollier h-x diagram shows the water content of air depending on its temperature and relative air humidity. Mollier h-x diagram for calculating the water content of air. It is even possible to cool the interior temperature of the enclosure to well below the ambient temperature. The favourable aerodynamic arrangement of the air inlet and outlet openings in the internal and external circuits ensures optimum air circulation inside the enclosure. This sample calculation will show you a quick, time-saving method for calculating a cooling unit. For example: A cooling unit with a refrigeration output of 1500 watts commences operation with a temperature setting of Ti = 35°C. The relative ambient air humidity is 70 %. If air at 35°C is passed over the evaporator coil, the surface temperature of the evaporator coil (evaporation temperature of the refrigerant) is approximately 18°C. At the boundary layer adhering to the surface of the evaporator coil, water is deposited at the dew point. The difference Δx = x1 – x2 indicates how much condensation is incurred per kg of air with complete dehumidification. The leak-tightness of the enclosure has a decisive effect on the quantity of condensation. Enclosure door closed: Only the enclosure volume is dehumidified. Poorly sealed cable designs, damaged door seals and the attachment of display media to enclosure surfaces lead to increased rates of leakage in the enclosure. Hence, with a leakage rate of, say, 5 m3/h, a continuous condensate volume of up to 80 ml/h may occur. Summary: Enclosure cooling units should only operate with the door closed. ● Seal the enclosure on all sides. ● Use a door limit switch. ● Use TÜV-tested equipment. ● Only set the enclosure internal temperature as low as is actually needed. W = Water quantity in g V = Volume of the enclosure in m3 ρ = Density of air kg/m3 Δx = Difference of water content in g/kg dry air (from the Mollier h-x diagram) V = width ⅐ height ⅐ depth = 0.6 m ⅐ 2 m ⅐ 0.5 m V = 0.6 m3 W = V ⅐ ρ ⅐ Δx = 0.6 m3 ⅐ 1.2 kg/m3 ⅐ 11 g/kg W = 7.92 g 8 ml Calculate your required cooling output. Tw = Water inlet temperature (°C) QK = Continuous useful cooling output (W) Ti = Enclosure internal temperature (°C) . Notes on water quality For safe operation of the equipment, it is essential to observe the VGB guidelines on cooling water (VGB-R 455 P). Cooling water must not contain any limescale deposits or loose debris; in other words, it should have a low level of hardness, particularly a low level of calcium hardness. For recooling within the plant, the calcium hardness should not be too high. On the other hand, however, the water should not be so soft that it attacks the operating materials. When recooling the cooling water, the salt content should not be allowed to increase excessively due to the evaporation of large quantities of water, since electrical conductivity increases as the concentration of dissolved substances rises, and the water thereby becomes more corrosive. For this reason, not only is it always necessary to add a corresponding quantity of fresh water, but also to remove part of the enriched water. Gypsiferous water is unsuitable for cooling purposes because it has a tendency to form boiler scale, which is particularly difficult to remove. Furthermore, cooling water should be free from iron and manganese, because otherwise deposits may occur which settle in the pipes and block them. At best, organic substances should only be present in small quantities, because otherwise sludge deposits and microbiological contamination may occur. Benefits at a glance ● Air throughput from 20 m3/h to 700 m3/h ● Super-fast assembly ● IP 54 as standard ● Air flow direction may be reversed from draw-in (default setting) to extracting ● All fans also available with EMC shielding ● Minimal installation depth ● Fan also bayable Important ● The prescribed heat loss and the maximum anticipated ambient temperature define the required volumetric flow ● Always use the fan-and-filter units and outlet filters together Tips and tricks Applications see page 198 Selection criteria see page 199 Assembly see page 200 Application diversity and functions Particularly for applications in the food industry, the hose-proof hood prevents the ingress of damp. The protection category of IP 56 is achieved in conjunction with filter mats. Not always full power! At lower ambient temperatures, the air throughput may be reduced. By adapting the fan-and-filter speed to match the temperature using a controller, noise generation is reduced. Also available with EMC shielding All fan-and-filter units and outlet filters are alternatively available with EMC shielding. The required conductive connection is achieved via a metallic coating on the fan- and-filter unit housing and a special sealing frame. Fast assembly Super-fast clip-on mounting This guarantees fast, completely secure attachment of the fan-and-filter unit. The prerequisites for protection category IP 54 are met as standard. Screws are not required. Removal of the louvred grille, like- wise without any screws, means that filter mat changes can be achieved in next to no time. Draw-in or extract? The air direction may be quickly reversed from draw-in (default setting) to extracting. Simply rotate the fan through 180°.
