EQ TEST
PART 1
I did an EQ test and the results reveals that my overall emotional intelligence score is 68. The score is based on the average of two components tested. These components include the personal competence and social competence. I scored 69 in personal competence and 68 in social competence. These results reveals that I need to do a lot to improve my emotional intelligence. The score shows that I sometimes demonstrate emotionally intelligent behavior but not usually. Possibly, I could be brushing people off when something is bothering me or I could be acting out when I am upset. I could also be making decisions without considering different options. These are some of the actions that are limiting me from demonstrating emotionally intelligent behavior. There are a number of strategies that I can apply in order to improve my emotional intelligence. The first strategy I should take is to manage my self-talk. I can achieve this in many ways.
First, I should treat every situation as unique. This will allow me give appropriate response to any give situation. I can also control self-talk by being accountable for my actions and accepting mistakes as part of life. All these activities will prevent me from brushing people off when something is bothering me. Another strategy I should adopt is to sleep on a given issue or to be patient. Time reduces emotional influence and make things clear.
The last strategy is that I should set aside some time in my day for problem solving. Time is very important. It allows the mind to sort important things from non-important. It also allows the mind and brain to cool down. This prevent emotionally-charged responses from taking over. I should set aside a 15-minute period each day whereby I allow my mind to wander freely and churn reasonable thoughts for problem solving.

Dan, who is my role model is striving to build his EQ skill on the social competence. My friend has problem managing social awareness and relationship with others. He often differs with others. He tends to consider himself “better” than others. He has problem picking up on emotions in other people and getting what is really going on. He also has problem letting emotional awareness guide clear communication. In other words, my friend is defensive. He tends to value his side of arguments. He strives to justify his stands in no matter what the case is. He also get annoyed easily. For example, in the morning, Dan differ with Beth over an issue. However, after sometime, Dan realizes that Beth was right. A closer look at Dan’s situations reveals that he doesn’t allow every thought to settle in his mind. He tends to reacts very fast with all emotions and hence give subjective and self-centered responses, which in most cases, opposes the truth and expectation.
Interestingly, when Dan is given time, he can break down the issue and understand it better. In fact the way Dan respond to the same issue now is not the same as he will respond afte ...

You’re taught about history, science, and math when you’re growing up. Most of us, however, aren’t taught how to identify or deal with our own emotions, or the emotions of others. These skills can be valuable, but you’ll never get them in a classroom.
Emotional intelligence is a shorthand that psychological researchers use to describe how well individuals can manage their own emotions and react to the emotions of others. People who exhibit emotional intelligence have the less obvious skills necessary to get ahead in life, such as managing conflict resolution, reading and responding to the needs of others, and keeping their own emotions from overflowing and disrupting their lives. In this guide, we’ll look at what emotional intelligence is, and how to develop your own.
What Is Emotional Intelligence?
Measuring emotional intelligence is relatively new in the field of psychology, only first being explored in the mid-80s. Several models are currently being developed, but for our purposes, we’ll examine what’s known as the “mixed model,” developed by psychologist Daniel Goleman. The mixed model has five key areas:
· Self-awareness: Self-awareness involves knowing your own feelings. This includes having an accurate assessment of what you’re capable of, when you need help, and what your emotional triggers are.
· Self-management: This involves being able to keep your emotions in check when they become disruptive. Self-management involves being able to control outbursts, calmly discussing disagreements, and avoiding activities that undermine you like extended self-pity or panic.
· Motivation: Everyone is motivated to action by rewards like money or status. Goleman’s model, however, refers to motivation for the sake of personal joy, curiosity, or the satisfaction of being productive.
· Empathy: While the three previous categories refer to a person’s internal emotions, this one deals with the emotions of others. Empathy is the skill and practice of reading the emotions of others and responding appropriately.
· Social skills: This category involves the application of empathy as well as negotiating the needs of others with your own. This can include finding common ground with others, managing others in a work environment, and being persuasive.
You can read a bit more about these different categories here. The order of these emotional competencies isn’t all that relevant, as we all learn many of these skills simultaneously as we grow. It’s also important to note that, for our purposes, we’ll only be using this as a guide. Emotional intelligence isn’t an area that most people receive formal training in. We’ll let psychologists argue over the jargon and models, but for now let’s explore what each of these me.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to discuss the
generational gaps that are found in the workplace
today. With multiple generations working together,
and the oldest generation having to work longer and
retire later, generational changes are occurring in the
workplace and for management. There is a lack of
communication and understanding between the
different generations caused through differing values
and goals. Younger generations are also entering
different fields than those that were popular for older
generations. There is a serious new problem in the
workplace, and it has nothing to do with downsizing,
global competition, pointy-haired bosses, stress or
greed. Instead, it is the problem of distinct
generations — the Veterans, the Baby Boomers, Gen
X and Gen Y — working together and often colliding
as their paths cross.
Individuals with different values, different ideas,
different ways of getting things done and different
ways of communicating in the workplace have always
existed. So, why is this becoming a problem now? At
work, generation differences can affect everything
including recruiting, building teams, dealing with
change, motivating, managing, and maintaining and
increasing productivity All of these ideas are
explored, discussed, and evaluated, through looking
at current research on the topic and case studies that
have been conducted not only in the United States but
around the world.

After completing the assessment, my Signature Theme Report produced the following results: Communication, Relator, Individualization, Consistency, and Strategic. When I first saw the themes presented, I was a little skeptical at first but after reading the detailed descriptions I felt like it made a lot of sense and mirrored a lot of what I had already thought about myself.
A core value that I would like to continue to strengthen would be the value of acceptance. One of my top five themes was relator which explained that I have a comfortability with gravitating towards people I already know and building relationships from there. I don’t have issues with making new relationships, but I can see that sometimes I close myself off initially to embracing new ones. With acceptance, you have to understand that there are some situations you can control and some that you can’t but embracing the latter can lead to new experiences that could be beneficial (Riley, 2021). Another core value that I would like to improve upon would be calmness. This fits in well with my theme of consistency. While I am a firm believer of things being fair and consistent, I can get easily upset when things don’t balance out like they are expected to. I know that working on being calm in tense situations will help me adapt easier when things don’t always work out as they should.
One of the strengths that I would like to embrace fully and continue to improve upon is communication. It was no surprise to me that communication was at the top of my list for my themes. When I am in a position of leadership at work, I make it a priority to keep my staff updated on everything that is going on for that night and it is something I expect from my charge nurse when I am working the floor also. A communicator is only effective when they are aware of their style of communicating and how others perceive or respond to it (Marshall & Broome, 2021). As a communicator I know that I can always work on how I communicate non-verbally and with body language especially. The other strength that I would like to continue to work on is of being strategic. The report explained that the strategic theme fit me because I am able to sort through the clutter and find the best route when I am trying to accomplish something. I really believe this about myself because when I have a task I need to accomplish, whether I am in a leader position or not, I will break everything down and reorganize it to make sure I have come up with the best solution. I feel like the best way to do something is the way that makes it concise and without a lot of excess getting in the way.
A characteristic of mine that I would like to strengthen would be that of instinct. My theme of individualization points out that I have an instinct about others and how they work and function. I have always felt that I easily read people and can get a sense of who they truly are and for example in the workplace how they are as a staff member. S.

I did an EQ test and the results reveals that my overall
emotional intelligence score is 68. The score is based on the
average of two components tested. These components include
the personal competence and social competence. I scored 69 in
personal competence and 68 in social competence. These results
reveals that I need to do a lot to improve my emotional
intelligence. The score shows that I sometimes demonstrate
emotionally intelligent behavior but not usually. Possibly, I
could be brushing people off when something is bothering me or
I could be acting out when I am upset. I could also be making
decisions without considering different options. These are some
of the actions that are limiting me from demonstrating
emotionally intelligent behavior. There are a number of
strategies that I can apply in order to improve my emotional
intelligence. The first strategy I should take is to manage my
self-talk. I can achieve this in many ways.
First, I should treat every situation as unique. This will allow
me give appropriate response to any give situation. I can also
control self-talk by being accountable for my actions and
accepting mistakes as part of life. All these activities will
prevent me from brushing people off when something is
bothering me. Another strategy I should adopt is to sleep on a
given issue or to be patient. Time reduces emotional influence
and make things clear.
The last strategy is that I should set aside some time in my day
for problem solving. Time is very important. It allows the mind
to sort important things from non-important. It also allows the
mind and brain to cool down. This prevent emotionally-charged
responses from taking over. I should set aside a 15-minute
period each day whereby I allow my mind to wander freely and
churn reasonable thoughts for problem solving.

2. Dan, who is my role model is striving to build his EQ skill on
the social competence. My friend has problem managing social
awareness and relationship with others. He often differs with
others. He tends to consider himself “better” than others. He has
problem picking up on emotions in other people and getting
what is really going on. He also has problem letting emotional
awareness guide clear communication. In other words, my
friend is defensive. He tends to value his side of arguments. He
strives to justify his stands in no matter what the case is. He
also get annoyed easily. For example, in the morning, Dan
differ with Beth over an issue. However, after sometime, Dan
realizes that Beth was right. A closer look at Dan’s situations
reveals that he doesn’t allow every thought to settle in his mind.
He tends to reacts very fast with all emotions and hence give
subjective and self-centered responses, which in most cases,
opposes the truth and expectation.
Interestingly, when Dan is given time, he can break down the
issue and understand it better. In fact the way Dan respond to
the same issue now is not the same as he will respond after 2
hours. Dan’s problem is lack of enough time to decompose the
issue and respond to it accordingly. The case reveals that by the
time Dan gets to work and discusses the morning’s event with
friends, he will have at least decompose and can clearly respond
to the issue. Initially, Dan believed that Beth was not right.
However, when Dan gets to work, he begins to think Beth is
right.
One observation that can be made from Dan’s case is that time
is an important factor when it comes to management of EQ. It is
clear that time allows one’s emotions to settle. It enables the
person to see things from broader perspective.

Sleep On It
In the timeless classic, War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy wrote that
the two strongest warriors are time and patience.
The power of these warriors comes from their ability to
transform situations, ease pain, and provide clarity.
Sometimes situations that require our patience can feel so
uncomfortable, dissatisfying, and rife with anxiety that
we jump to action just to alleviate the internal turmoil. But
more often than not, giving yourself that extra day,
week, or month to digest the situation before moving forward is
all you need to stay in control. And sometimes,
while you're waiting, things may surface that make your
decision that much easier to make.
� Time helps you to self-manage because it brings clarity and
perspective to the thousands of thoughts that
go swimming through your head when something is important.
Time also helps you to gain control of emotions
that you know would lead you in the wrong direction if you
were to let them drive. It's that simple. All you need to
do is force yourself to wait for the dust to settle before you
make a move.

Any time you are acquiring a new skill, remember the best
path for doing something new or different looks like this:
• Find someone who is good at it.
• Watch that person do it.
• Get that person to talk about how they do it.
• Practice doing it yourself with his or her guidance.
• Ask the person to give you feedback.
• Practice doing it on your own.

Change can be a little...
Embarrassing, because as you practice new things, the very
people who feel you ought to change may poke fun
at you, forget to encourage you along the way, or not even
notice. Don't give up. The rewards will outweigh these

• Say, "I could really use a little support here."
• Tell people you are serious about getting better at this. Most
likely, they will become your allies.

• Remind yourself that change takes time and practice.
• Remind yourself that it's OK not to know.

Change can also be terrific. It surprises most people how a little

feedback doesn't even begin to hit home until he

By the time Dan gets to work and discusses the morning's
events with a friend, it's clear that Beth's feedback has
had a chance to sink in. Not only does Dan think Beth is right,
but Dan's coworker also agrees with her. The more
Dan thinks about Beth's feedback, the more he begins to see
what is making him so frustrated.
SELF-AWARENESS TIP
To increase your self-awareness, you need to embrace feedback
with open arms. Research shows that the vast
majority of people struggle to see themselves as others see
them, and the most accurate picture of anyone's
behavior comes from those around them. The best way to find
out what others see is to ask them. Asking for

clip, see if you can pick up on the self-management mistakes
each character makes.

easy. That is, until we're convinced that we know what the other
person is saying. That's when we cut people off,

going on.

by a keen read of the man. Homer's father may
hold the authority, but that doesn't mean he doesn't need to feel
heard. Homer knows the only way to get through
to his father is to address his concerns directly, and Homer does

As you can see from the clip, directly addressing the feelings
