The Immigrantly Podcast (formerly The Alien Chronicles) is a minority women owned & run weekly podcast that features immigrants from all different walks of life to share their immigrant experiences. Immigrantly deconstructs the archaic stereotypes of what it means to be an immigrant, a child of immigrants, a person of color and everything in between. Each episode brings a fresh perspective on the issues we address. Our conversations are complex, challenging, and oftentimes messy. But I wouldn’t trade the messiness for anything, because what we have created instead is a new, ongoing dialogue full of rich nuances.

The person I chose to interview is my grandmother, Pastor Thompson. My grandma was born in Coffeeville, AL she grew up in a house of eleven children with both her parents. My grandmother raised me and people always tell me I have an old soul because I remember all the things she taught me, that she learned from her mother. One thing I learned about my grandma is that she really valued everything that her mother taught her, and she used those values to instill in me. She’s really old school and she doesn’t care that she was born in 1938 and it is now a new way of doing things. My grandmother remembers The Jim Crow laws from being at school and not being able to use the same bubbler as the white kids. How they had separate entrances than the white kids at school as well. The importance of keeping your head up and never look defeated according to her mother. “Always look like you’re worth something, lift your head up be proud of who you are”, she would say. She was raised Pentecostal Christian, which is a very strict denomination. It surprises me how far back her memory goes and have vivid it is, of course as she get’s older she no longer remembers a lot of things. But I do think that she chose to makes sure she remembered certain things. In being around my grandmother all my life I realized that she and her mother are very superstitious, which to me contradicts being a Christian. No sweeping you foot, don’t step over someone lying on the floor, don’t sit you purse on the floor etc. I chose to interview her because she knows first hand what it was like for African Americans in the time where we regarded as nothing.
1.

5.
What concerns you the most about society today?
6.
What advice do you want to give to the generations to come?
How far back in time can the person remember? What is his or her first childhood memory? (Consider how it reflects the interview subject's culture or subculture?)
About 1954, visiting her grandmother’s house walking through the woods and being hungry.
What does the person remember of the experience of being an immigrant or a subgroup member in that time?
The bathrooms one said white and one said back, the water fountain, in the restutant she had to order out the back window. Riding in the back of the bus.
Which impressions or experiences from that time are most vivid to him or her today?
Bad customer service people don’t want to treat you like you’re a person.
If he or she immigrated to this country, what was the country of origin like in t ...

I had been raised up as a proud black girl. My mother and Father made sure that would help me reaffirm my sense of identity through photos of my great great- grandmother a full Indian. I could see myself through her. Thus, I was a very proud black girl and would often identify myself as African as opposed to African American. However, it was a while before I accepted who I was. Growing up as a black girl in a predominantly white neighborhood and school was not easy for me. Many of the Caucasian children of my age in the neighborhood approached me with general courtesy such as why is your nose so big? Why do you have big lips? In the beginning as a child I felt that I was like everyone else until others started pointing out my ethnic features. As I got older is started noticing that I was different. Expressed by both my parents that I was beautiful, it was not enough for validation. It did not help that both my dad and step mom had been very light skinned and could almost pass as Puerto Rican or mixed. The type of light skin that could burn and not get dark. They did not have to be the only black child on the volleyball team in middle school, or the only black girl in Girl Scouts. I started to gain a better picture of how they perceived black people in general. I often wished that I could go to a school that had more black people who were sharing my experience. Perhaps if there were more of us then we could confide in each other and show these other girls that there is absolutely nothing wrong with or awkward about being black (Sen, 2013).
Even in the black community and family no ones wants to be known as the dark one. Our culture brainwashed us to believe not to even marry another dark individual if yourself was dark. “Please don’t bring home a black ashy baby!”. Hearing that all the time, I am wondering but what about love? As a result of these thoughts, feelings I started feeling like I was an incomplete black girl. I kept all these issues to myself until I was an adult with two kids entering the military. There was a different type of discrimination. Gender discrimination.
In a dominate male organization it is very hard to achieve success in the right way. I have never been discriminated as a women and women of color until I entered the Army. TALK ABOUT THE FEMALES BEING IN THE ARMY
As an adult I now recognize that there were elements of white supremacy in the undertone of the comments being made by these girls. They thought that white girls were beautiful and naturally perfect. In the same breadth they thought much less of black girls. In effect they associated all the prominent features of black girls with ugliness such as the kinky hair. This clearly points to white supremacy. They believed in the superiority of features associated with white girls without any factual backing whatsoever (McIntosh, 2000).
Talk about the course and what affect it has on me. COURSE DES.

Sister Soulja is an individual that greatly inspires me because she embodies everything I associate myself with being in the near future, such as a community activist. Soulja organized against racially motivated crimes, police brutality, and the miseducation of the urban youth. She is most known for what they now call, “The Sister Soulja Moment,” which originated in 1992 during the President Bill Clinton campaign. Sister Soulja was a guest speaker at Reverend Jesse Jackson Rainbow Coalition event where she did an interview about the Rodney King case and was quoted as saying, “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?”…her remarks were connected to a much longer response and in full context makes sense, but isolated subjected her to criticism. Clinton compared her to David Duke, the former politician, convicted felon and KKK Grand Wizard. Souljah stands by what she has said. “If you ask me my view, even if it’s not your view, you have to handle that,” she says. However, when an interviewer ask Soulja to explain ‘the sister soulja moment’ her reply was, “That’s when you meet a beautiful, powerful woman—and you just can’t forget her.’”
In 1995, because of her success and sincerity, Sister Soulja was selected by Sean P. Diddy Combs to become the Executive Director of his charitable organization, Daddy’s House Social Program where she built the program and created academic programs for a total of seven years. In the field of entertainment, Soulja was the young voice in New York radio that spoke to the hip hop audience about politics, culture, business, and social organizations. She was also a featured speaker in the Million Woman March. She’s also had appearances on Oprah Winfrey, Larry King and the cover of the Newsweek Magazine.
Today, Soulja is the author of five national best sellers. In 2007 she became a New York Times Best Selling author and has since charted in the top ten of the New York Times list three times over. Soulja wrote the Coldest Winter Ever, which went on to sell two million copies to date. Even in 2015 Soulja work still rings bells as it was mentioned on the hit show, “Orange is the new black,” not for her usual controversial moments, but to reference her work in the prison library.
She inspires me simply because she is realistic. She was born in the projects of New York and she grew up poor. She was indeed a product of her environment yet she didn’t become a statistic. I am from one of the most dangerous cities in America and according to the food chain I grew up poor as well, but it’s what we call now “middle class.” I had a child out of wedlock and being a minority didn’t help my story, yet I overcame that. It inspires me to see a young, black, woman be strong, be educated, have class and show strength in a room full of people who think that their educated enough to overpower you with .

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

I did a lot of research, I looked at other platforms. And I realized, you
know, there really isn't there. Just there wasn't anything that existed for
children of immigrants when it comes to mental health. And as I reflected
on my experiences, I realized a lot of my struggles are rooted in this
biculturalism. In this identity, as a child of immigrants.
5. I remember as a kid, and even now there are moments of consciousness and experiences that I have literally
trouble putting words to, or fully comprehending a lot of cultures like my own did not promote mental health
conversations, never mind have the lexicon to even engage now Sahaj Kohli bears witness to this unique reality

Sure. I'm really excited to be here and be having this conversation with you. So I was born in the suburbs outside
of Richmond, Virginia. I'm the first in my family to be born in the West. I have two older siblings who moved to this
country with my parents right before I was born. And I was socialized and grew up in predominantly non-Indian
environments. Yeah, so my parents are from Punjab, but my mom actually is from Japan. So while she's full Indian,
full Punjabi, she grew up in Japan. So I have family in Japan. So I was born outside of Richmond, Virginia, my
parents and my siblings were all born in India. But my mom was socialized and grew up in Japan. So I spent most
of my years growing up splitting our vacation time between visiting family in India, which would be my paternal
family, and splitting my time going to Japan to visit my maternal family. So I feel like I grew up in a tricultural
household, because my mom would often make Japanese food, she would often be watching like TV dramas and
Japanese, and we have a lot of decorations around the house, that are Japanese, but you know, my family is Sikh,
they follow the Sikh religion, and my dad is fairly religious. And so we grew up speaking Punjabi, you know, going
to Gurdwara on Sundays, but I was going to school and had friends who were not Sikh or Indian...

So Sahaj, you mentioned that you suffered a
trauma that was the trigger for you to look
towards mental health and talk about it. But it
was difficult to have this conversation with your
immigrant parents. Why do you think that was
the case?
