Kingwood Greenbelts

The greenbelt system in Kingwood Texas winds throughout the community. These trails preserve the wildlife in the area and to provide safe access to schools, parks and shopping with out having to cross major roads. Residents can walk, ride bikes or roller blade through tunnels built along the major streets. You can pick up a Kingwood Greenbelt System map from the Kingwood Service Association Office located at 1102 Kingwood Drive, Suite 104, Kingwood, TX 77339. They will as you to present your driver's license showing you are a resident of Kingwood in order to give you a map.

Science '44 Co-operative Inc., a student housing co-operative in Kingston, Ontario, will receive an award for Co-operative Social Responsibility for its sustainability initiatives that support Kingston's goal of becoming Canada's Most Sustainable City. The co-op has installed energy efficient systems, diverted organic waste, purchased renewable energy, and implemented an education program for its members. It shares its strategies with other groups to help advance sustainability in the community. The award ceremony will honor 11 leaders and is part of an annual conference that brings together over 250 people involved in co-operatives.

Trees Atlanta is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and improving Atlanta's urban forest. It is working to create an arboretum along the BeltLine, a planned 22-mile loop circling Atlanta, to support research, education, and beauty related to trees. The arboretum will provide seemingly endless opportunities to connect with new supporters and partners over the 20 years needed to complete the BeltLine.

The club funds these service projects through local fundraising events and works with other Rotary clubs on larger collaborative efforts.

Dimitra Clubs – Enhancing the resilience of rural men and women through community mobilization Strengthening the resilience of rural households, communities and institutions is essential to eradicate hunger and malnutrition. In resilience work, the social dimension should be systematically included to prevent and mitigate the effects of shocks and crises in the life of men and women of rural communities. This dimension relates to gender equality, participation, social cohesion, communication, access to information, etc. To this end, FAO has developed and implemented a community-driven approach, named Dimitra Clubs, to empower rural people. The approach has been recognized as an FAO good practice for gender equality. The Dimitra Clubs are groups of women, men and young people who decide to organize themselves so as to work together to bring about changes in their communities. They meet regularly to discuss the challenges they face in their daily lives, make decisions and take collective action to resolve their problems. In this process, rural radio stations are used as a relay to increase the communication flow, provide access to knowledge and raise awareness on themes that have been identified and requested by the clubs themselves (food security and nutrition, access to water, land, sanitation, health, gender roles and relations, climate change adaptation in agriculture, conflict resolution, etc.). Public-Private Partnerships and Multi Stakeholder Strategies -- Food production will have to meet the needs of two billion additional people by 2050. Besides existing stresses of inequity in resource use and resource depletion, climate variability and change are additional stressors. These changes put at risk both local food security and global commodity markets. Large-scale applications of improved water use and management approaches are needed to build resilience in agricultural production systems. HELVETAS is implementing ‘Water for Food’ programs worldwide to optimize water consumption in agricultural production. It partners with public and private sector stakeholders to raise awareness and build capacities on efficient water management and to enhance buyers’ demand and support for water saving approaches. Melchior Lengsfeld and Rupa Mukerji will share HELVETAS’ innovative push-pull-policy program for the two key crops of rice and cotton, which account for over 30% of global irrigation water consumption. HELVETAS (www.helvetas.org), the leading Switzerland-based international development NGO, has 60 years of experience in rural economy, water & infrastructure, environment & climate change, and governance & peace. HELVETAS is working in 32 countries to fight rural poverty. In 2015, the 501(c)(3) HELVETAS USA was launched to strengthen relationships with key US partners.
