โ€ข Conservation and Management of Mangroves and Coral Reefs
The National Policy, 2006 recognizes that mangroves and coral reefs are important
coastal environmental resources. They provide habitats for marine species, protection
from extreme weather events; and a resource base for sustainable tourism. Government
has identified 38 mangrove areas and four coral reefs areas on a country-wide basis for
intensive conservation and management.

โ€ข Management of Gregarious Flowering of Muli Bamboos
in NE states of India
Bamboo flowering in Assam,
โ€ข Government of India approved the revised
action plan โ‚น 366 crores in early 2007, for
management of prospective Gregarious
flowering of the bamboos in the NE states to
tackle the ecological, economical and social
problems likely to arise out of the gregarious
flowering of the Muli Bamboos.
โ€ข India has the largest bamboo resource in
the world. Before 2007, gregarious
flowering of Muli Bamboo had taken place
in 1959 and its cycle is 48 years. So
government had to improve Bamboos yield
and its management of flowering
โ€ข Project Tiger
Our National Animal
โ€ข Project tiger was launched in 1973 with the
objective to ensure maintenance of viable
population of the tiger in India.
โ€ข 100% Central Assistance provided to 17
tiger reserve as an additionally for
deployment of tiger protection force,
comprising of ex-army personnel and local
work force.
โ€ข Constitution of National Tiger Conservation
Authority with effect from September,2006
for strengthening the tiger conservation.
โ€ข Common Effect Treatment Plant (CETP)
A CETP in Chennai
โ€ข The concept of CEPT arose in order to
make a co-operative movement for
pollution control. Wastewater treatment
and Water conservation are the prime
goals of CETP
โ€ข A centrally sponsored scheme has been
undertaken by the government for small
scale industries to set up and upgrade
their CETP to cover all the states in the
nation.
โ€ข During this year โ‚น 3.95 crore allocation
were provided for providing financial
assistance to the on-going CETPs.
โ€ข Taj Protection Mission
Taj Mahal
โ€ข In pursuance of Supreme Courtโ€™s order,
projects for WHS of Taj Mahal were
initiated and funded by the Ministry.
โ€ข โ‚น 600 crore on a 50:50 cost sharing
basis with the state government to
implement various schemes in the Taj
Trapezium zone for environmental
protection of Taj Mahal.
โ€ข Ministry had sponsored a post
evaluation study for complete projects
through the CSIR NEERI Nagpur for
ascertaining the improvement in the
area.
โ€ข Effective Removal of Arsenic
Arsenic contamination seriously affects Human
Health
โ€ข The discharge of untreated toxic
effluents and sewage into the Gujarat
state's rivers is still taking a toll on the
purity of these invaluable sources of
water. In particular, arsenic and lead
make the water dangerous to drink.
โ€ข Development of point of use (POU)
clean technology in form of domestic
unit employing a complexing resin (v)
for from water by Central salt and
Marine Chemical Research Institute

โ€ข National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA)

โ€ข National Ganga River Basin Authorityโ€˜
(NGRBA) was set up on February 20,
2009. The NGRBA is set up as an
empowered planning, financing,
monitoring and coordinating
authority for the conservation of
Ganga River
โ€ข The Authority has both regulatory
and developmental functions. The
Authority will take measures for
effective abatement of pollution and
conservation of the river Ganga in
keeping with sustainable
development needs.
โ€ข National Wetland Conservation Program (NWCP)

โ€ข The scheme on conservation and
management of wetlands was
initiated in 1987.
โ€ข During the year, Management Action
Plans of forty eight wetlands were
approved and financial assistance
released to the concerned State
Governments.
โ€ข The total allocated amount of
Rs.11.85 crores has been spent on
Research projects to supplement
Management Action Plan (MAPs) for
conservation of wetland
โ€ข National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP)

โ€ข National Lake Conservation Plan
(NLCP) is a Centrally Sponsored
Scheme of Ministry of Environment &
Forests, for conservation/ restoration
of polluted and degraded lakes.
โ€ข As of March 31, 2009, a total of forty
projects for conservation of fifty
seven lakes have been sanctioned in
thirteen States at a sanctioned Cost
of Rs. 856.76 crore Conservation
works for twelve lakes have been
completed. Funding pattern under
NLCP is on a 70:30 cost sharing basis
between the Central and the State
Governments.
โ€ข Center for Ecological Sciences, IISc Banglore
โ€ข Centreโ€™s work on tropical forest structure, dynamics and the influence of climatic factors involves
long-term monitoring of permanent plots in tropical forests of Western Ghats, mainly the Nilgiris
and Uttara Kannanda districts.
โ€ข Centre have been focusing on the ecology of the invasive species Lantana camara, its response to
climatic factors and itโ€™s impact on native plant and animal communities.
โ€ข The Centre has completed study on bat diversity in Kudremukh National Park. A total of twenty bat
species have been identified to date. Of these, sixteen species belonged to the Microchiroptera
(insectivorous bats) and four to the Megachiroptera (fruit-eating bats). Of the forty one species of
bats reported so far from the Western Ghats.
โ€ข Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON),
Coimbatore
โ€ข Species specific studies on bird that
included a study on โ€˜Ecology and
Conservation of the Spot-billed Pelicanโ€™ a
globally threatened species, in Andhra
Pradesh.
โ€ข As part of eco-toxicological investigations
on birds, a study on Impact of agricultural
pesticides on the population status and
breeding success of certain fish-eating
birds in Tamil Nadu was taken up.
Golden Bush-Robin (Tarsiger chrysaeus) found in
Himalayas and north-east India
โ€ข Rajendra K Pachauri
In January 2008, Rajendra K Pachauri was awarded the
second-highest civilian award in India, the Padma
Vibhushan.
Pachauri conceptualized and launched Lighting a Billion
Lives Initiative in 2005 to bring electricity to energy
starved rural areas of India through solar energy. The
initiative has taken solar energy to remote places
like Sundarbans, West Bengal and Thar Desert,
Rajasthan.
Pachauri headed the post Chairman of the United
Nations established Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change. The IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace
Prize with former US Vice-President Al Gore.Rajendra K Pachauri

  • 4. โ€ข Conservation and Management of Mangroves and Coral Reefs The National Policy, 2006 recognizes that mangroves and coral reefs are important coastal environmental resources. They provide habitats for marine species, protection from extreme weather events; and a resource base for sustainable tourism. Government has identified 38 mangrove areas and four coral reefs areas on a country-wide basis for intensive conservation and management. Mangroves trees in Kerala Coral reefs : Andaman
  • 5. โ€ข Management of Gregarious Flowering of Muli Bamboos in NE states of India Bamboo flowering in Assam, โ€ข Government of India approved the revised action plan โ‚น 366 crores in early 2007, for management of prospective Gregarious flowering of the bamboos in the NE states to tackle the ecological, economical and social problems likely to arise out of the gregarious flowering of the Muli Bamboos. โ€ข India has the largest bamboo resource in the world. Before 2007, gregarious flowering of Muli Bamboo had taken place in 1959 and its cycle is 48 years. So government had to improve Bamboos yield and its management of flowering

Wastewater treatment and Water conservation are the prime goals of CETP โ€ข A centrally sponsored scheme has been undertaken by the government for small scale industries to set up and upgrade their CETP to cover all the states in the nation. โ€ข During this year โ‚น 3.95 crore allocation were provided for providing financial assistance to the on-going CETPs.
  • 9. โ€ข Taj Protection Mission Taj Mahal โ€ข In pursuance of Supreme Courtโ€™s order, projects for WHS of Taj Mahal were initiated and funded by the Ministry. โ€ข โ‚น 600 crore on a 50:50 cost sharing basis with the state government to implement various schemes in the Taj Trapezium zone for environmental protection of Taj Mahal. โ€ข Ministry had sponsored a post evaluation study for complete projects through the CSIR NEERI Nagpur for ascertaining the improvement in the area.

The NGRBA is set up as an empowered planning, financing, monitoring and coordinating authority for the conservation of Ganga River โ€ข The Authority has both regulatory and developmental functions. The Authority will take measures for effective abatement of pollution and conservation of the river Ganga in keeping with sustainable development needs.

  • 14. โ€ข National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) Puskar Lake Rajasthan โ€ข National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Ministry of Environment & Forests, for conservation/ restoration of polluted and degraded lakes. โ€ข As of March 31, 2009, a total of forty projects for conservation of fifty seven lakes have been sanctioned in thirteen States at a sanctioned Cost of Rs. 856.76 crore Conservation works for twelve lakes have been completed. Funding pattern under NLCP is on a 70:30 cost sharing basis between the Central and the State Governments.

  • 16. โ€ข Center for Ecological Sciences, IISc Banglore โ€ข Centreโ€™s work on tropical forest structure, dynamics and the influence of climatic factors involves long-term monitoring of permanent plots in tropical forests of Western Ghats, mainly the Nilgiris and Uttara Kannanda districts. โ€ข Centre have been focusing on the ecology of the invasive species Lantana camara, its response to climatic factors and itโ€™s impact on native plant and animal communities. โ€ข The Centre has completed study on bat diversity in Kudremukh National Park. A total of twenty bat species have been identified to date. Of these, sixteen species belonged to the Microchiroptera (insectivorous bats) and four to the Megachiroptera (fruit-eating bats). Of the forty one species of bats reported so far from the Western Ghats.
