Nature's Role in Sustainability
This is a PowerPoint for a presentation I gave recently at CNU21, the annual gathering of the Congress for New Urbanism, in Salt Lake City. I was honored to serve on a panel presentation titled "Urbanism and the Land," with Susan Mudd of CNU and Laura Hanson of the Jordan River Commission. This presentation was intended to share with urban planners my expression of Nature's Role in Sustainability, and to outline my framework for what Father Thomas Berry called Earth Jurisprudence. He called on the legal profession to "articulate the conditions for the integral functioning of the Earth process." My Evolutionary Law framework describes the elements of the Earth process, including The Rights of Nature, sustainable Rights to Nature, Biopilia, Biomimicry, Cooperation, and Coherence (Quantum and Ecological). When those elements are implemented in a synergistic way, they lead to greater Biodiversity, Natural Resilience and Natural Happiness (indicators of the Integral Functioning of the Earth Process).

Water scarcity is a growing issue that affects over 2.8 billion people worldwide for at least one month each year due to a lack of sufficient water resources to meet needs. Climate change is exacerbating rain-related disease risk. Models project significant increases in the frequency and intensity of intense rainfall events in Wisconsin by 2055 due to climate change. More frequent and intense storms increase the risk of waterborne diseases by overwhelming aging infrastructure and increasing pathogen runoff into water sources. Studies have shown increases in acute gastrointestinal illnesses, especially in children, following heavy rainfall events. Contaminated groundwater from failing septic systems also poses a disease risk. Climate change impacts like more frequent extreme rainfall events threaten greater waterborne disease outbreaks unless infrastructure is upgraded and policies are implemented to mitigate risks.Mississippi Flood handout sheet

Totten will address the topic “Water in an Uncertain Climate Future.” Billions of people around the world are mired in poverty, are chronically ill, and lack adequate drinking water and basic sanitation services. Efforts to ensure water security now also contend with the impacts of climate change and the uncertainty in water flow and availability.
Water use is pervasive throughout the global economy but concentrated in agriculture (about 75 percent of water withdrawals worldwide) and thermal power plants (48 percent of off-stream use in the U.S.). A core concern is how to
deliver water services for these needs at least cost and risk while addressing issues of social equity and ecological integrity.
Totten will present the case that there are win-win-win pathways in addressing these multiple crises, and he will highlight
some of the evidence and experience to date in using innovative practices, policies and regulations in delivering water and water-related services.
He has nearly three decades of professional experience in promoting ecologically sustainable economic development at the local, national and international levels. At Conservation International's CELB, he engages corporations and public institutions in adopting strategies to shrink and offset the ecological footprints of goods and services throughout their lifecycle. He has given more than 1,500 presentations and written scores of publications.
Totten is the principal co-author of the 2008 book, A Climate for Life: Meeting the Global Challenge, an interdisciplinary perspective on preventing catastrophic climate change and human-triggered species extinction while providing robust
economic growth. He received the Lewis Mumford Prize for Environment in 2000 for pioneering the creation of interactive multimedia and Internet tools for spurring ecologically sustainable development. As senior adviser to U.S. Rep. Claudine Schneider (R-R.I.), he drafted the 1989 Global Warming Prevention Act, cosponsored by one-third of the House of Representatives.

system encompasses the Hawksbury-Nepean River,
Pittwater, Brisbane Water and Broken Bay, which
span the Greater Sydney and Hunter - Central Coast
regions. Together, these provide a stunning natural
environment, areas of cultural significance, a
multitude of social and recreational benefits, and are
a key contributor to the regional economy.
In accordance with the NSW Coastal Management
Framework, management of the estuary system and
its tributaries will be guided by a Coastal
Management Program (CMP). The six (6) councils
that border the tidal waterways of the system have
agreed to work together through Stage 1 of an
integrated, whole of system CMP. The councils are:

advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.

of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
