Ensuring Inclusion Features for Anticipating and Managing Trade-Offs in Agricultural Landscapes

With water resource variability rapidly growing and demands on water resources increasing, using digital tools and innovative, inclusive institutional approaches to address both challenges is becoming ever-more urgent. A recent workshop under the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (Research Area on Variability, Risks and Competing Uses), showcased research outputs in two activity clusters - Managing Resource Variability and Risks for Resilience and Managing Competing Uses and Trade-offs - that can help increase water security for poor rural users while also improving food security and rural livelihoods.

- Slide 4: Here I am representing the floodplain when is flooded and dry. I want to highlight that the floods regulates vegetation type, water availability and fish location. Also, floods incorporate OM (and for instance improves soil fertility), creates habitat for fish and birds (particularly at key stages such as spawning and migration/reproduction respectively), and aquatic areas are recharged to be used by humans, cattle and agriculture particularly during the dry season. However, we can also think that this is a productive area for agricultural intensification potentially with rice or maize supported by international and national policies. But it is important to assess what will get lost during this conversion and of we can identify agroecological intensification strategies that can minimize the losses in terms of ES, particularly from the perspective of the local communities who live and depend on this ecosystem.
