Gilgamesh was a historical king of Uruk in ancient Mesopotamia around 2700 BC. Stories and myths about Gilgamesh were passed down orally before being written in cuneiform on clay tablets in Sumerian and Akkadian. The most complete version is 12 tablets in Akkadian found in the library of Assyrian king Ashurbanipal dating to the 7th century BC.
