Enhancing the Status Message Question Asking Process on Facebook

People have been using Social Networks to search for help by broadcasting messages that reflect their information needs. However, several factors, usually not considered by the user, influence the outcome of receiving or not an answer. In this work, we aim to increase the users’ chances of finding someone who could help them. For this purpose, we propose a mobile app called Social Query, which guides the users through some steps before they share the problem with their friends. As far as we know, this is the first work to merge these three aspects of the social search: Question Rephrasing, Expert Search Filtering and Expertise Finding. To evaluate our proposal, we ran a questionnaire in which users considered Useful most functions of the app.

Previous studies on the practice of asking questions on social networking sites have shown that most questions remain unanswered and that most of the replies, if any, are only from members of the questioner's neighborhood. In this paper, we specifically consider the challenging task of solving a question posted on Twitter. The latter generally remains unanswered and most of the replies, if any, are only from members of the questioner's neighborhood. As outlined in previous work related to community Q\&A, we believe that question-answering is a collaborative process and that the relevant answer to a question post is an aggregation of answer nuggets posted by a group of relevant users. Thus, the problem of identifying the relevant answer turns into the problem of identifying the right group of users who would provide useful answers and would possibly be willing to collaborate together in the long-term. Accordingly, we present a novel method, called CRAQ, that is built on the collaboration paradigm and formulated as a group entropy optimization problem. To optimize the quality of the group, an information gain measure is used to select the most likely ``informative" users according to topical and collaboration likelihood predictive features. Crowd-based experiments performed on two crisis-related Twitter datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our collaborative-based answering approach.

Facebook survey – What questions people ask on walls?

CQA services are collaborative platforms where users ask and answer questions. We investigate the influence of national culture on people’s online questioning and answering behavior. For this, we analyzed a sample of 200 thousand users in Yahoo Answers from 67 countries. We use a number of cultural factors extracted from Geert Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Robert Levine’s Pace of Life and show that behavioral cultural differences exist in community question answering platforms. We find that national cultures differ in Yahoo Answers along a number of dimensions such as temporal predictability of activities, contribution related behavioral patterns, privacy concerns, and power inequality. Web users are increasingly relying on social interaction to complete and validate the results of their search activities. While search systems are superior machines to get world-wide information, the opinions collected within friends and expert/local communities can ultimately determine our decisions: human curiosity and creativity is often capable of going much beyond the capabilities of search systems in scouting “interesting” results, or suggesting new, unexpected search directions. Such personalized interaction occurs in most times aside of the search systems and processes, possibly instrumented and mediated by a social network; when such interaction is completed and users resort to the use of search systems, they do it through new queries, loosely related to the previous search or to the social interaction. In this paper we propose CrowdSearcher, a novel search paradigm that embodies crowds as first-class sources for the information seeking process. CrowdSearcher aims at filling the gap between generalized search systems, which operate upon world-wide information - including facts and recommendations as crawled and indexed by computerized systems – with social systems, capable of interacting with real people, in real time, to capture their opinions, suggestions, emotions. The technical contribution of this paper is the discussion of a model and architecture for integrating computerized search with human interaction, by showing how search systems can drive and encapsulate social systems. In particular we show how social platforms, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, can be used for crowdsourcing search-related tasks; we demonstrate our approach with several prototypes and we report on our experiment upon real user communities.

Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become very popular and new ways of use their virtual environment have emerged. One of these new ways is a method to obtain information online called Social Query that consists of sharing a question on an OSN and waiting for answers come from contacts. The usual strategy is sharing a question that will be visible to everyone (public). However, this way there is no guarantee that an answer will be received neither about the quality of the answer. Directing the question to an expert about its subject (Query Routing) is a better strategy, but decides to whom direct the question is not always an easy task. In this work, we propose and evaluate a model to decide who user is the most able to receive a question and answer it correctly and quickly. The differential of our research is that we focused in OSNs context and leaded with the recommendation as multi-criteria decision making problem. Our evaluation shows promising results and confirms the great performance of our proposal.

Social Query: A Query Routing System for Twitter

Social Query is a new and efficient way to get answers on the social networks. However, the popular method of sharing public questions could be optimized by directing the question to an expert, a process called query routing. In this work, we propose a Social Query System for query routing on Twitter, currently, one of the most popular social networks. The Social Query Systems analyzes the information about the questioner’s followers and recommends the most suitable users to answer the questions. The use of the system changes the usual process, working apart of Twitter and allowing questioner and responder exceed the limit of 140 characters. Through a qualitative evaluation, we showed promising results and ideas for improving the system and the recommendation algorithm.

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
