ENHANCING THE LAYOUT
OF THE PETE

INTRODUCTION
 The Pete was opened in 2002 along with the Peterson Events Center
 It is one of the University of Pittsburgh’s most popular facilities.
 The Pete is the largest and most visited gym facility on campus having 40,000
ft2 of space and averaging over 115 visitors per hour.
 For students getting a swift and efficient workout is impossible because of
The Pete’s open space, and equipment organization.
THE PROBLEM
 The Pete, suffers from poor space utilization
 Poor equipment utilization
 Poor equipment grouping
 Over and under sized aisles
 In ability to allocate and position necessary equipment properly
THE PROJECT PURPOSE
 To improve the overall user experience at The Pete
 Formulate suggestions to rearrange the layout of The Pete
 Adjust current aisle sizes
 Use open space for free cardio area
 Make suggestions on the removal or addition of machines
OUR METHODOLOGY
1. Analyze the current arrangement and placement of machinery and
departments
2. Conduct survey to determine common lifting patterns for students
3. Track the usage of machines during peak times 2-6pm
4. Consolidate data and provide recommendations
5. Propose new layout based on findings
OUR METRICS
1. Utilization of machines in free weight area
 Time studies conducted during peak hours (2pm-6pm)
 Record machine utilization and idle times
2. Utilization of floor space around free weight and matted area
 Determine the ratio of utilized floor space versus total space available
 Determine ratio of space used by machines and their allowances over total area
available in each department
3. Student Experience at The Pete Gym
 Conduct survey on student’s wait time and overall satisfaction with facility

OUR PROPOSED SOLUTION
OUR FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS
 Move squat racks back-to-back.
 Move four benches from the squat rack area to the free weight area.
 Establish a new free cardio area.
 Designate Squat only racks and Bench Press only racks.
 Remove leg machines from free weight area and locate them with the squat
only racks.
 Track benefits of new layout by reiterating the methodology.

INTRODUCTION  The Pete was opened in 2002 along with the Peterson Events Center  It is one of the University of Pittsburgh’s most popular facilities.  The Pete is the largest and most visited gym facility on campus having 40,000 ft2 of space and averaging over 115 visitors per hour.  For students getting a swift and efficient workout is impossible because of The Pete’s open space, and equipment organization.
  • 4. THE PROBLEM  The Pete, suffers from poor space utilization  Poor equipment utilization  Poor equipment grouping  Over and under sized aisles  In ability to allocate and position necessary equipment properly
  • 5. THE PROJECT PURPOSE  To improve the overall user experience at The Pete  Formulate suggestions to rearrange the layout of The Pete  Adjust current aisle sizes  Use open space for free cardio area  Make suggestions on the removal or addition of machines
  • 6. OUR METHODOLOGY 1. Analyze the current arrangement and placement of machinery and departments 2. Conduct survey to determine common lifting patterns for students 3. Track the usage of machines during peak times 2-6pm 4. Consolidate data and provide recommendations 5. Propose new layout based on findings

OUR FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS  Move squat racks back-to-back.  Move four benches from the squat rack area to the free weight area.  Establish a new free cardio area.  Designate Squat only racks and Bench Press only racks.  Remove leg machines from free weight area and locate them with the squat only racks.  Track benefits of new layout by reiterating the methodology.

Editor's Notes

  1. Prior to explaining our methodology it is important to not that all of our studies and tests were taken between 2-6pm during peak hours suggested by the Pete managers. The first step in our project was to analye the current layout and take note of current machine placement. The inventory list provided by the managers assisted in the analysis of the current layout. Next we conducted a qualitative survey, approved by pete management, on the common lifting patterns for students. Then we took time studies of the machines in the free weight and squat rack area. Lastly we consolidated our data in the form of an excel spreadsheet created an REL chart and formulated recommendation for our final layout.
  2. For our metrics we found it necessary to do time studies and record machine utilization and idle times, we also felt it necessary to determine just how much space is being used in comparison to the total space of the free weight area. Finally we felt the most important people to parse data from was the students who use the pete day in and day out.
  3. This is a floor plan of the current layout of the pete. As your can see one the right hand side is the squat area and inside is a patch of underutilized free space on the left side is the deadlift and freewight area which also contains the leg machines. It is important to note the barrier effect that the squat racks produce around that free space and it is important to note that most of the free cardio occurs in front of the entrances to the raquetall courts
  4. From our time studies we noted several machines that typically go underused these machines have high idle times and low average times of use. These machines include the calf press, loaded leg press, and the Ssleg press. Based on our survey, it was said that the underutilization of these machines was due to the amount of distance between them and machines that work similar muscle groups.
  5. As you can see here highlighted in yellow are the machines which have high average idle times and low usage, by moving these machines within proximity of machines that work similar muscle groups we hope to increase their usage and decrease their idle times.
  6. Using the comments by students for our survey we were able to determine utilization relationships between the pieces of equipment in the free weight area, culminating in this REL chart. For instance we received numerous user feedback stating the need for the tribar rack to be placed next straight bar rack and away from the leg press machine. Users who access the tri bar rack state that with the tiny aisle size between the tri bar rack and the loaded leg press makes it harder for users to navigate to their designated workout spot. this is just One of the simple space utilization problems we addressed within our proposed solution and recommendations.
