Adrienne Rich was an American poet born in 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland. She authored nearly twenty volumes of poetry and was considered a feminist and radical poet. The poem describes trees that have been inside a house moving back out into the forest at night. As the trees' roots disentangle and branches shift, the poet sits inside writing letters without directly mentioning the departure of the forest. By morning, the once empty forest will be full of trees again.
