the death of his uncle, King Carol I. He ruled Romania during
the First World War, choosing to fight against the Entente
against the Central Powers. had the effect of excluding him
from the Royal House of Hohenzolern by the head of this
house, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany.
At the end of the war, Romania ended the process of
achieving the national-unitary state by uniting Bessarabia,
Bukovina and Transylvania with the Old Kingdom. On
October 15, 1922, in Alba Iulia, Ferdinand crowned himself as
the first king of Great Romania.
4. The marriage!
The Royal House of Romania began searching for a party for
the crown prince Ferdinand, meant to secure the future of this
dynasty. This will trigger a series of actions designed to contribute
to the knowledge and closeness between Ferdinand and Princess
Mary of Edinburgh. The first meetings in 1891 will be total
failures, but then through the energetic intervention of the German
Emperor who calls on the shy Ferdinand and orders him to resolve
the situation, simultaneously with the pressures of the great
Duchess Maria Alexandrovna on Mary, things will be arranged by
announcing the engagement the new couple in the summer of
1892.
5. On January 10, 1893, in Sigmaringen in Germany, the
marriage of his Royal Highness Ferdinand, the Crown Prince of
Romania with his Royal Highness, is celebrated of Edinburgh.
The celebration actually included three marriage ceremonies:

6. World War I
Though a member of a cadet
branch of Germany's ruling
Hohenzollern imperial family,
Ferdinand presided over his country's
entry into World War I on the side of
the Triple Entente powers against the
Central Powers on 27 August 1916.
Thus he gained the nickname
the Loyal, respecting his oath when
sworn in before the Romanian
Parliament in 1914: "I will reign as a
good Romanian."
7. After de war
Domestic political life during
his reign was dominated by the
conservative National Liberal party
led by the brothers Ion and Vintilă

ironically enlarged the electoral
base of the opposition, whose
principal parties united in January
1925 – October 1926 to form the
National Peasant Party.

Ferdinand died in Sinaia
on July 20, 1927, after a
galloping colon cancer. He
was buried at the Curtea de
Arges Monastery. His
successor to the throne was
Prince Mihai, who became
the second king of Great
Romania under the name of
Mihai I, but who, because of
the minority, will rule under
regency.
