Engines can be classified into two main types: internal combustion engines which convert thermal energy from combustion into mechanical energy within the engine itself, and external combustion engines which obtain thermal energy from an external source. Internal combustion engines are further divided based on ignition type into compression ignition or diesel engines and spark ignition gasoline engines, and can also be classified by fuel type, design as either reciprocating piston engines or rotary Wankel engines, and by number of strokes.
