Process control involves using computers or microprocessors to control industrial processes. There are three main types of process control: batch process control which combines specific amounts of raw materials together for a set time like making prepackaged meals; continuous process control which regulates uninterrupted processes like fuel production; and discrete process control which produces specific items through manufacturing applications like robotic assembly lines. Process control is used across many industries like oil refining, chemicals, food production, and automotive manufacturing.
This document discusses the importance of in-process control for food quality and safety. It defines critical control points as steps in the manufacturing process where small differences can cause health hazards, illegality or cost issues. Specific measurements taken at critical control points include product weight, temperature, size, ingredient usage, yields and waste. Recording data during operations and reviewing it with management allows identification of problems and prevents reoccurrence.
This document provides an introduction to process control. It discusses the importance of precise control of variables like temperature, pressure, and flow in process industries. Process control is necessary to reduce variability, increase efficiency, and ensure safety. Key terms are defined, like process variable, set point, error, and load disturbance. The components of control loops like transducers, transmitters, and different signal types are also explained.
Process control is a discipline that deals with maintaining the output of an industrial process within a desired range. It enables automation and mass production with small staff. For example, controlling room temperature involves measuring the temperature (input), comparing it to the desired setpoint, and adjusting the heating source (output) to keep it constant. Larger systems can be controlled by distributed or supervisory control and data acquisition systems. Process control includes discrete, batch, continuous, and hybrid applications in various industries like oil refining, chemicals, and power plants. Statistical process control uses charts to monitor process variation and detect quality issues.
Supply chain management refers to coordinating activities involved in producing and distributing a product, from procuring raw materials to delivering the finished product to customers. It includes both upstream suppliers and downstream distribution networks. The goal of supply chain management is to efficiently integrate these entities to minimize costs and satisfy customer demands by producing and distributing the right products, in the right quantities, to the right locations and at the right time. Inefficiencies in the supply chain can waste up to 25% of operating costs. Key drivers of supply chain performance are facilities, inventory, transportation, and information sharing throughout the chain.
This document discusses process control and process variables. It defines key terms like process, process variables, control variables, set points, and manipulated variables. It explains that the objective of process control is to convert raw materials into desired products using available energy sources efficiently while meeting safety, environmental, and economic requirements. It also describes different types of feedback systems used in process control like positive and negative feedback loops and discusses their advantages and disadvantages.

It notes that both energy conservation and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) are important factors to consider, but maintenance is key to optimizing both over time. The document outlines various aspects of design, installation, commissioning and operation that impact maintainability and sustainability. It emphasizes the need for good access, commissioning, energy efficiency maintenance through optimization, and IAQ maintenance through proper ventilation, filtration, and system checks. The overall message is that maintenance should be planned from the start to maximize energy savings, indoor air quality, and system performance throughout the lifespan of the HVAC system.

It covers the classification of process variables, including manipulated, disturbance, measured and unmeasured variables. The document also addresses the main objectives of control systems, which are ensuring stability, suppressing disturbances, and optimizing economic performance. It questions what variables should be measured, what inputs can be manipulated, and what control configurations are best depending on the number of inputs and outputs in the chemical process. Finally, it describes the main types of control configurations: feedback, inferential, feedforward, and combinations of feedback and feedforward control.

An integrated warehouse management system based on demand flow technology (DFT) can optimize material handling in a manufacturing plant. DFT is a pull manufacturing system that triggers production based on customer demand using kanban techniques. It accommodates small lot sizes down to single units and allows flexibility in scheduling. Implementing DFT requires major changes to corporate culture, organization structures, management attitudes, and worker relationships. Adopting DFT can eliminate inspector jobs, dramatically reduce cycle times and work in progress, enable faster inventory turnover, and support both JIT and TQM operations.

Holistic health factors in the workplace were explored through a study of four small offices. The three main factors considered were biophilia, ergonomics, and exercise. A majority of participants valued emotional, physical, and social health equally and preferred work environments that incorporated natural elements, ergonomic furniture and equipment, and space for exercise. Significant findings indicated that freedom of movement and music were believed to contribute most to productivity. While some participants felt their workplaces lacked exercise opportunities, none felt they lacked sensory variability. Most participants were unwilling to sacrifice compensation to implement preferred work environments.

This document discusses the importance of proper air balancing in buildings and facilities. It begins with defining building pressure and listing symptoms of negative pressure. Unbalanced facilities can cost thousands per year in unnecessary energy expenses. Common causes of imbalance are equipment issues and poor maintenance. Regular air balancing checks the HVAC system's performance and ensures positive pressure and proper airflow. Facility managers should schedule balancing to improve comfort, efficiency and equipment lifespan. A case study shows how balancing found many issues across 4 locations.

Reinforcement Learning based HVAC Optimization in FactoriesDebmalya Biswas
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units are responsible for maintaining the temperature and humidity settings in a building. Studies have shown that HVAC accounts for almost 50% energy consumption in a building and 10% of global electricity usage. HVAC optimization thus has the potential to contribute significantly towards our sustainability goals, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. In this work, we explore ways to optimize the HVAC controls in factories. Unfortunately, this is a complex problem as it requires computing an optimal state considering multiple variable factors, e.g. the occupancy, manufacturing schedule, temperature requirements of operating machines, air flow dynamics within the building, external weather conditions, energy savings, etc. We present a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based energy optimization model that has been applied in our factories. We show that RL is a good fit as it is able to learn and adapt to multi-parameterized system dynamics in real-time. It provides around 25% energy savings on top of the previously used Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controllers.
