Using recycled plastic products
which are more efficient
Compared to the ceramic cups
plastic cups are easy to maintain as
they are not brittle
Life time of the plastic cups is quite
high compared to ceramic. The
calculations are made assuming
cups are changed every year.
initial investment of Rs. 7000 for
melamine cups
25 trees a month
Total cups used per day= 200 (based on survey report)
Total cups used per month= 200*30= 6000 cups.
Trees required to make one paper cup= 6.5 million/16 billion
=0.0040625 trees
Therefore, in a month trees used= 0.0040625x6000 = 24.375
Therefore, approximately we use 25 trees per month
Over 6.5 million trees were cut down to make 16 billion paper cups used
by US consumers only for coffee in 2006, using 4 billion US gallons
(15,000,000 m3) of water and resulting in 253 million pounds of waste.
Overall, North Americans use 58% of all paper cups, amounting to a
staggering 130 billion cups.
Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_cup
Water used to make one paper cup=150
billion litres/16 billion= 9.375 litres
In a month water used to make 6000
cups=56250 litres
Water used to wash 200 cups for a month = 1500 litres per month ( based on survey results)
Cost of one paper cup = Rs.
Therefore in a year total cups used= Rs.36000.
Therefore, total cost for one year = Rs. 36000
One melamine cup costs= Rs. 35
Therefore 200 Melamine cups=Rs.7000
(statistics for one year)
Bone china mugs have already been tried in the mess. But they didn’t work because of their brittle nature.
Food scientists in the U.S. say that
there are melamine products in
which it’s safe to cook and serve,
but because of inadequate labeling
it’s almost impossible to tell the
safe products from those that can
release formaldehyde.
Therefore choose the right
material for no harmful effects!

Total water used= 423*6=2538 litres

Therefore Total saving per day=846 litres
Saving per month= 846*30=25440 litres

Covering of the balcony chajjas Light inside the rooms can be increased by 62%, and save 26 KWH/day in hostel Timer sockets Can reduce total energy consumption upto 872 KWH/day Putting 2 liter plastic bottles inside all flush tanks Can reduce daily water consumption by 848 L/day Aerator taps Can reduce daily water consumption by 5346 L/day Melamine cups Saying no to paper cups. Use melamine in mess cups and save 0.83 tree daily, 375L/day and Rs 96 daily. Vertical moss gardens Moss gardens can reduce the cooling electricity consumption to 288 KWH/day Solar concentrator panels Can save hostel 830 kwh of electricity daily Pressure alarms Can reduce water wasted due to overflow by 3700L daily, for the whole campus Keyholder switches Can reduce electricity consumption by 16 KWH daily Energy saving proposals Total water saved:9894 L/dayin campus Total electricity saved: 1744KWH/dayin hostelduring winters Total electricity saved: 1160KWH/dayin hostelduring summers Saving 0.83trees daily in mess
  • 3. SOURCE : SELF IDEA IMPORTANCE : ESSENTIAL PAPER CUPS REPLACEMENT REPLACEMENT OF PAPERCUPS ALTERNATIVE : MELAMINECUPS 200/day Paper Cups 25/month Trees CLEANING 200 Plastic cups /month 1500 L /month WATER EMBEDDED ENERGY Plastic cup used 17times 1 paper cup Using recycled plastic products which are more efficient Compared to the ceramic cups plastic cups are easy to maintain as they are not brittle Life time of the plastic cups is quite high compared to ceramic. The calculations are made assuming cups are changed every year. initial investment of Rs. 7000 for melamine cups 25 trees a month Total cups used per day= 200 (based on survey report) Total cups used per month= 200*30= 6000 cups. Trees required to make one paper cup= 6.5 million/16 billion =0.0040625 trees Therefore, in a month trees used= 0.0040625x6000 = 24.375 Therefore, approximately we use 25 trees per month Over 6.5 million trees were cut down to make 16 billion paper cups used by US consumers only for coffee in 2006, using 4 billion US gallons (15,000,000 m3) of water and resulting in 253 million pounds of waste. Overall, North Americans use 58% of all paper cups, amounting to a staggering 130 billion cups. Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_cup Water used to make one paper cup=150 billion litres/16 billion= 9.375 litres In a month water used to make 6000 cups=56250 litres Water used to wash 200 cups for a month = 1500 litres per month ( based on survey results) Cost of one paper cup = Rs. Therefore in a year total cups used= Rs.36000. Therefore, total cost for one year = Rs. 36000 One melamine cup costs= Rs. 35 Therefore 200 Melamine cups=Rs.7000 (statistics for one year) Bone china mugs have already been tried in the mess. But they didn’t work because of their brittle nature. Food scientists in the U.S. say that there are melamine products in which it’s safe to cook and serve, but because of inadequate labeling it’s almost impossible to tell the safe products from those that can release formaldehyde. Therefore choose the right material for no harmful effects! PROPOSAL 001

IMPORTANCE : DESIRED IDEA PROPOSAL ENERGY SAVING SOCKETS WATERBOTTLE IN FLUSH Putting a 2 liter water bottle into the flush tank will eventually decrease the volume of the water the flush tank can hold but the quality of the flush will not be affected. Water Spent by Flush 2538 l / day Water Spent by Flush 1692l / day RESULT 25440l / month SAVING Using waste plastic bottles No maintenance required Durability depends on Water bottle being used No Investment required 25440 lit / month SOURCE : SELF IDEA Total strength in hostel= 423 ( considering a person uses toilet three times a day) Total water used= 423*6=2538 litres when capacity of a flush = 6 litres Water consumed after insertion of bottle= 423*4=1692 litres when capacity of flush after bottle= 4 litres Therefore Total saving per day=846 litres Saving per month= 846*30=25440 litres NO INVESTMENT REQUIRED! Bottles can easily be collected from the hostel campus itself. PROPOSAL 002

Normally works well for around 2 years 1000 Rs. On Amazon.com ENERGY SAVING SOCKETS The device’s being used cannot be made to use optimum energy ,but the sockets can be made energy efficientSocket switches off appliances after a specified interval. 872 kwh / day Time for which room heater is on during peak winter months=8 hours a day. If the socket is used, the use can reduce to 2 hours a day. Therefore, saving for 2 hours a day No. of rooms having heaters= 81( as per survey results) Total power consumption if used for 8 hours=81*8*2=1296 kwh Total power consumption if used for 2 hours=81*2*2=324 kwh Therefore savings=872 kwh energy per day! 8 hours/day Saving 872 kwh ELECTRICITY EVERYDAY JUST FROM ROOM HEATERS 2 hours/ day 1296 kwh/ DAY 324 kwh/ DAY PROPOSAL 004
