The initiative will also create an online resource center for materials from the events.
Recovery Through Retrofit identified homeowners’ lack of access to information, financing and skilled workers as the key barriers that have prevented a strong nationwide home energy retrofitmarket from growing. The report also laid out several recommendations aimed at breaking down these barriers. During the last year, an interagency working group has addressed each of therecommendations and the Middle Class Task Force and CEQ are pleased to report on ourprogress and announce the launch of several new initiatives.

Overcoming Pakistan's current crisis through energy efficiency and renewable energy was the topic of a seminar supported by USAID and organized by Senator (R) Rukhsana Zuberi, chairperson of the Pakistan Engineering Council and head of the non-government organization, South Asian Women in Energy.
The Alliance's Alexander Filippov was among the experts advising Pakistani representatives on energy efficiency implementation.
As commercial energy efficiency programs mature and savings goals increase, utilities must go beyond easy-to-identify measures like lighting and attract hard-to-reach customer segments. How can utilities and program administrators realize deeper energy savings at scale within the Midwest, given these challenges?
Based on actual energy analysis of tens of thousands of real buildings, Retroficiency presented insights about efficiency opportunities that exist across utility portfolios in the commercial sector, and provided specific best-practice strategies utilities and program administrators are employing to address these opportunities.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Energy Efficiency Loan Program
1.
2. Overview:
Pathway Lending is a Private, Non-Profit Economic
Development Lender certified by the U.S. Department of
Treasury.
Founded: 1999
Mission: Providing underserved small businesses with lending
solutions and educational services that result in job creation and
economic development.
3. Why Energy Efficiency?
• Peers: From industrial giants to the shop next door, business
owners are getting on board with energy efficiency. It’s the best
way to save money, reduce risk, and maintain a competitive edge.
• Profits: Studies show that every $1 spent on energy efficiency
projects yields $2.84 over the life of the project.
• Planet: Technological advances can improve building efficiency by
as much as 30%-60%, resulting in lower utility bills and reduced
environmental impacts without sacrificing quality or comfort.
• People: People prefer to work in energy efficient buildings. Studies
show that productivity increases by 3%-5% and sick days decrease
by 20%-25% when energy efficiency measures are implemented.
5. Energy Efficiency Loan Fund Basics:
• What:
A low-interest, revolving loan fund to finance energy
efficiency and renewable energy projects in Tennessee.

• Financial Test:
Can the company repay the loan, even if no savings occur?
What do the last 2 years financials look like?
• Energy Savings Test:
Does the company have a complete assessment, audit, or
vendor proposal detailing project cost and energy savings?
Can the savings repay the loan within 10 years?
• Job Creation/Retention Test:
How many jobs will be retained and/or created due to the
savings generated by this project?
9. Energy Efficiency is a Profit Center:
Manufacturing Averages:
•Energy averages 9% according to Manufacturing Institute
•Annual profitability: 5% - 10%
Example:
Company with $10 million in sales
•$900,000 annual energy costs
•$700,000 average profitability
•25% energy cost reduction = $225,000 to the bottom line
10. Success Story: Eco Travel Plaza
“We use a lot of electricity and we wanted to do more. But we didn't have room
on our site for more solar panels or wind, so we couldn't produce more energy.
We decided to cut what we use.” – Don Demko, Owner
Solar Panels, Lighting & HVAC Upgrades
Eco Travel Plaza in Crossville, Tennessee aims to be the

20. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation through its Office of Energy
Programs is proud to launch a new Energy Education Initiative which will be delivered in
conjunction with Pathway Lending and other statewide energy resource providers. This
Initiative provides in depth training along with educational tools to support the
implementation of energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy management projects.
Funding for the Energy Education Initiative is provided by the Department of Energy through
the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. As a result, the program will be able to provide
“tuition paid” workshops and conferences at many locations throughout the state over the next
several months. Some will focus on very specific topics such as multi-family housing or
industrial energy efficiency while others will have a broader approach to Sustainability. At each
of these events, the presentations and materials will be recorded and made available for all
Tennessee companies to access through an Online Resource Center to launch later in the year.
