• The thyroid, or thyroid gland, is an endocrine gland
in the neck consisting of two connected lobes. The
lower two thirds of the lobes are connected by a thin
band of tissue called the thyroid isthmus. The thyroid
is located at the front of the neck, below the
Adam's apple.

posterior to the sternothyroid and sternohyoid

• is an immune system disorder that results in the
overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism).
Although a number of disorders may result in
hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease is a common cause.
Thyroid hormones affect many body systems, so signs
and symptoms of Graves' disease can be wide ranging.

Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that
form within your thyroid, a small gland located at
the base of your neck, just above your breastbone.
Most thyroid nodules aren't serious and don't cause
symptoms. Only a small percentage of thyroid nodules
are cancerous.
